Such a curse f study als leads t Assciate Membership f the CIPD and is a prerequisite fr yu t apply eventually fr Chartered Membership and Chartered Fellwship f the CIPD. The verall aim f the curse is t develp yur ability t be critically evaluative f the practice f HRM whether it is in yur wn r ther rganisatins. Teaching and learning methds The guiding principle behind the curse is t prduce capable and effective prfessinals. A key requirement n this curse is t prvide yu with a rich and flexible learning envirnment which takes accunt f cultural diversity, particularly fr the full time prgramme and which includes the use f nline technlgies t enhance yur learning. Our teaching and learning methds are based n tw related assumptins: Philsphical That the primary respnsibility f the tutr is the prvisin f apprpriate learning pprtunities. Engagement r nt with thse pprtunities is yur respnsibility, thugh the exercise f that respnsibility is influenced by the pprtunities prvided. Practical That yu already have a grunding thrugh qualificatins and experience f r interest in managerial and human resurcing practice. Additinally, yu have a level f maturity and belief in managing yur wn learning; deciding what is significant fr yu in what t learn, having sme cntrl ver hw yu learn and a willingness t share knwledge and experience with ther members f the curse. Yu need t be an independent and self-mtivated individual. Lectures and seminar discussins will enable yu t develp yur knwledge and understanding f the subject material and frmal and infrmal grup wrk will develp yur ability t wrk cnstructively with thers. Rle plays will develp yur prfessinal and persnal skills. The use f vide surces and pdcasts will allw key tpics in the area f HRM t be discussed enhancing yur knwledge and understanding f these and develping yur awareness f the diversity f 3

experience and pinin f each curse member Overall the teaching and learning methds are designed t maximise yur learning pprtunities during the life f the curse. They are als designed t engage each curse member s invlvement in the learning prcess f themselves and their clleagues thrugh: A fcus n grup as well as individual activities Incrpratin f a range f teaching and learning methds Applicatin and use f e-learning technlgies including the Nttingham Trent On-line Wrkspace (NOW) These methds are the means by which yu will develp bth a deeper level f knwledge and the critical awareness which are the hallmarks f a Master s graduate. 9. Assessment methds Our intentin is t assess all f the learning utcmes f each mdule. T assess yur knwledge and understanding we will use examinatins, case study analysis, written assignments, grup and individual presentatins as the main assessment methds. T assess skills, qualities and attributes we will use assessments based n the exercise f prfessinal skills, either individually r as a grup. If yu are assessed via grup wrk in a mdule there will als be an individual assessment f sme kind. Our aim, as far as pssible, hwever, is t have nly ne summative assessment in each mdule, althugh frmative assessments will be used t help yu t develp yur understanding f what is required frm the assessments. 10. Curse structure and curriculum Whether yu are studying full r part-time yu will jin the curse in September r Octber and yu will attend an inductin. The inductin fr the full and part time curses has been specifically designed with the different needs f these grups f students in mind t help yu get the mst frm the experience f studying at pstgraduate level. It will include critical analysis, prblem slving, ethics and prfessinalism, cultural awareness, university prcedures and prcesses, key library resurces and skills t access them and, crucially, will allw yu t get t knw ne anther. Other aspects f university life which will be cvered in the Inductin will be Student Supprt Services, the Students Unin and Careers Service. The verall nature and duratin f the inductin will be different fr full and part time students recgnising that yu will have different learning needs and will find different challenges in studying at pstgraduate level. Fr full time students the inductin will last between 5 and 10 days and will include a residential element. Fr part-time students the main inductin will last fr tw days. The residential element f HRM in its Business Cntext will, fr part-time students, expand upn elements f inductin Full time mde Fllwing inductin yur studies will cmmence in Term 1 with three mdules, each f which is 20 credit pints. Yu will study these in parallel 4

HRM in its Business Cntext Peple Resurcing and Talent Management Designing, delivering and evaluating learning and develpment prvisin In Term 2 yu will study Learning and Talent Develpment and Perfrmance Management and a chice frm tw ther mdules listed belw. Each f these is 20 credit pints: Managing Emplyee Relatins and Emplyee Engagement HRM in an Internatinal Envirnment Each mdule will be assessed n its cmpletin. Research Methds and Prfessinal Skills will be taught thrughut the curse and will be assessed by ne frmative written assignment and tw summative written assignments twards the end f the curse. In Term 3 yu will wrk in a small grup n a real life cnsultancy prject in a lcal business. The aim f the prject is t enable yu t: understand and apply prject management thery and tls, integrate thery and practice t demnstrate creativity in prblem slutin engage with a cmplex, real prject by applying thery t the wrkplace develp yur skills as a researcher, critical thinker and HR prfessinal encurage persnal develpment thrugh reflectin develp yur capacity t wrk with thers as a prfessinal cnsultancy team thrugh active participatin in a live cnsultancy prject. Part-time mde Yu will nrmally attend university n ne afternn and ne evening per week (usually the same weekday each week). In the first year yu will study the fllwing three mdules: HRM in its Business Cntext Peple Resurcing and Talent Management Learning and Talent Develpment. These mdules will be studied ne per term and yu will cmplete the learning and assessment fr ne mdule befre starting the next. During HRM in its Business Cntext there will be a tw day residential wrkshp at which yu will carry ut a grup prject and present the results. In the secnd year yu will study three elective mdules, fr example, Perfrmance Management, Emplyee Relatins and Emplyee Engagement and Emplyment Law. Other electives can be 5

ffered depending n demand Yu will als research and write a dissertatin in the secnd year usually this will be based within yur wn rganisatin. If the cmpeting demands f wrk, study and persnal life becme difficult t balance successfully yu may elect t cmplete the research and writing fr yur dissertatin during the first term f a third year f study (a s-called 7 th term). Research Methds and Prfessinal Skills will be taught thrughut the curse and will be assessed by ne frmative written assignment and tw summative written assignments twards the end f the curse. Persnal and/r wrk circumstance might dictate that yu have t defer yur studies at a certain pint in the curse. If this is the case cmpleted mdules will be recrded by the University and with the CIPD and yu may return at a later date t cmplete yur curse f study. (Such a return t study will be subject t University regulatins n the length f deferrals). Interim Awards There are tw pssible sets f interim awards shrt f the MSc details f each are utlined belw: University validated interim awards These are the Pstgraduate Certificate in Human Resurcing and the Pstgraduate Diplma in Human Resurcing. The Pstgraduate Certificate in Human Resurcing wuld be awarded t a student wh cmpleted 60 credit pints f study i.e. 3 mdules. The Pstgraduate Diplma in Human Resurcing wuld be awarded t a student wh cmpleted 120 credit pints f study, i.e. any 6 mdules. The interim awards f Pstgraduate Certificate in Human Resurcing and Pstgraduate Diplma in Human Resurcing will be equally available t full and part time students. Neither f these interim awards is apprved by the CIPD. University validated and CIPD apprved interim awards These are the Pstgraduate Certificate in Human Resurce Management and the Pstgraduate Diplma in Human Resurce Management. Yu wuld be eligible fr the award f Pstgraduate Certificate in Human Resurce Management if yu cmpleted HRM in its Business Cntext, Peple Resurcing and Talent Management and 6

Learning and Talent Develpment (i.e. 60 credit pints f study). Yu wuld be eligible fr the Pstgraduate Diplma in Human Resurce Management in the fllwing circumstances: Full time MSc HRM students: yu must cmplete the three mdules abve, Research Methds and Prfessinal Skills and the Grup Cnsultancy prject (120 credit pints) Part-time MSC HRM students: yu must cmplete the three mdules abve, Research Methds and Prfessinal Skills and the dissertatin (120 credit pints). The Pstgraduate Diplma in Human Resurce Management apprved by the CIPD is the minimum requirement fr eventually applying t becme a full member. Full time Curse The decisin t make an interim award and f which type wuld be taken at the exam bard at the end f yur perid f study. Part time Curse Yu may chse t study nly t the end f the first year. If yu have cmpleted the three cre mdules yu wuld be awarded the Pstgraduate Certificate in Human Management (CIPD Apprved). Sme students wh have enrlled n the part time MSc HRM curse may, at the end f Year 1, decide t study nly t the level f Pstgraduate Diplma in Human Resurce Management (CIPD apprved). If this applies t yu then yu wuld cmplete the three cre mdules in Year 1. In Year 2 yu wuld study ne ptinal elective, Research Methds and Prfessinal Skills and the Applied Management Research Reprt. 11. Admissin t the curse Full time students Yu will be required t have a gd first degree (equivalent t 2.2), preferably in a business related subject and yu shuld have English language at IELTS 6.5 Part time students Yu shuld have a first degree r ther qualificatin at an equivalent level r be able t prvide sufficient evidence that yu are capable f successfully cmpleting a curse f study at M level. Yu shuld als have relevant wrk experience related t management and/r human resurce management. If yur educatinal qualificatins are at a lwer level than a first degree yu will be asked t prvide sme evidence f yur capability t study n a Masters curse. Typically yu might be asked t cmplete a shrt assignment that wuld be assessed at interview by the Curse Leader. If yu have cmpleted the Certificate in Persnnel Practice r the Certificate in Human Resurcing Practice yu wuld be assessed n an apprpriate piece f wrk frm that Curse. Accreditatin f Prir Learning If yu have cmpleted part f a CIPD apprved r accredited curse elsewhere we may be able t 7

ffer yu the pprtunity t jin the curse with advanced standing against the mdules which yu have cmpleted. If yu are an applicant fr APL yu will be required t submit evidence f cmpleted wrk frm yur previus place f study and if these cmpleted mdules have previusly been registered with the CIPD supprting evidence frm the CIPD t that effect will be required. Each individual request fr cnsideratin will be assessed n a case by case basis by the curse team. Fr example, if yu cmpleted the Pstgraduate Diplma in Human Resurce Management r Persnnel Management at Nttingham Business Schl and wish t prgress t an MSc in HRM it is likely that yu wuld be required t cmplete a Research Methds mdule and a Dissertatin. 12. Supprt fr learning Befre inductin yu will receive all the general infrmatin yu will need t jin the curse. Inductin is an imprtant part f this curse and is discussed in Sectin 10. Part-time students will be prvided with Textbks whilst full-time students will be prvided with vuchers t assist with the purchase textbks (included in yur fees). These will be issued t yu during the inductin. The curse will make use f a dedicated web bard fr curse participants in rder t discuss, query and share infrmatin with the tutrs and ther participants which is in additin t email, telephne and face-t-face cntact. Library and Learning Resurces Facilities (LLR) A University Smart Card will be issued which will then allw access t all library and learning resurces including the curse web site which can be accessed n the University s Virtual Learning Prtal Nttingham Trent On-line Wrkspace (NOW) which can be accessed at https://nw.ntu.ac.uk During the inductin yu will be able t familiarise yurself with the library facilities and guidance t LLR facilities will be prvided at Inductin by the Library Infrmatin Specialist. Yu will be able t check the LLR web site http://www2.ntu.ac.uk/llr/ fr pening times and infrmatin abut ther resurces. The LLR facilities include specific supprt fr part-time and distance learners such as extended privileges, renewing bks nline, and prviding access t libraries clser t yu thrugh the UK Libraries Plus scheme. Academic Supprt: If yu require assistance f an academic nature, we suggest that yu aim t slve it as quickly as pssible, by discussing any prblems related t a particular tpic with the relevant tutr. This can be dne face-t-face r electrnically. In additin the Curse Leader is available fr any discussin n curse matters and the Curse Administratr is available t deal with the mre administrative matters. 8

An imprtant aspect f academic supprt is the ne-t-ne supervisin f the research prpsal and dissertatin r applied cnsultancy prject. This supervisin will be prvided thrugh a mixture f face t face meetings, email and mre generally thrugh web-based discussins n the curse s web bard. Nn-Academic Supprt: Yu will able t speak t the Curse Leader r Curse Administratr, in cnfidence, regarding mre persnal matters; if they cannt help yu, they will be able t direct yu t smene wh can. The University s central Student Supprt Services ffers a range f advice, supprt, guidance and cntacts and specific infrmatin n these services is prvided in the Curse Handbk which will be issued t yu at Inductin. 13. Graduate destinatins / emplyability Students wh have graduated frm a similar HRM Masters curse reprt that the learning has greatly helped their knwledge and ability t apply it and this in turn has enhanced credibility at wrk and imprved their career prspects. One student wh is nw the Deputy Chief Executive f a reginal netwrk f FE clleges ffered the fllwing cmment it tk sme time t realise the impact that the Masters made n my thinking and fr all the learning t wrk its way thrugh. A cuple f years later I knw that it gave me much mre cnfidence, new ideas, imprved knwledge and analytical skills which have helped me t mve t the new rle as well as implementing sme really psitive changes at X befre I left Anther recent graduate has established her wn HR cnsultancy business.
