Mature students with relevant experience but withut the nrmal minimum entry requirements are cnsidered favurably. Typically this might be thse frm a craft r technician backgrund r thse wh have significant apprpriate experience t bring t their studies. Students wh have gained an HNC in related studies are als encuraged t apply as the curse will ffer a stepping-stne int higher educatin in a University envirnment. These students will be eligible fr Accreditatin f Prir Certificated Learning. Entry Prcedures and Requirements All applicatins are cnsidered individually and credit maybe given fr previusly cmpleted qualificatins and wrk experience, as will all equivalent internatinal qualificatins. All applicants will have cmpleted a Fundatin Degree applicatin frm and submitted it t admissins at the Cllege f Nrth West Lndn befre being invited t interview by the Fundatin Degree Prgramme Manager. If yu were successful an ffer f either a cnditinal r uncnditinal place was made t yu. 1

2 The nrmal minimum frmal entry requirements fr the Fundatin Degree prgramme are as fllws: 1 GCE A level plus 3 GCSE at Grade C r abve Advanced GNVQ r Natinal Certificates/Diplma in cgnate areas Mature candidates with substantial life experiences and wh have gained typically three years wrk experience in cgnate areas including sme respnsibility fr managing resurces may be cnsidered fr the curse with: Advanced crafts certificates in cnstructin related subjects. GNVQ in cgnate areas English language and mathematical skills If yu did nt ffer GCSE in Mathematics and English when yu applied r were unable t demnstrate equivalent ability then yu will have been screened using standard diagnstic tests. Applicants may be referred t a preparatry studies prgramme befre jining the curse fr further specialist advice and guidance r in curse supprt fr English language and Mathematics skills. If yu are weak in Mathematical skills the aim is fr yu t achieve an acceptable standard by the beginning f semester 2. Wrk based learning If yu are a part time student yu must be emplyed in an area f wrk that enables yu t satisfy the requirements f the curriculum and this will have been a cnditin f entry t the curse. If yu are a full time student yu must have agreed with the Prgramme Manager hw the wrk based learning elements r mdules f the curse will be achieved. A cmpleted and signed mentr frm is required frm yur spnsring rganisatin as a cnditin befre entry t the curse. The Prgramme Manager will liaise with emplyers and the Careers Office within the Cllege t match wrk based learning places with emplyers and full time students entering the curse. Despite this it ultimately remains yur respnsibility t find apprpriate wrk based learning because the Cllege can ffer n guarantees f wrk placement r experience. Hwever, the philsphy f the curse design is that nrmally yu will be part time students wrking full time in the cnstructin sectr. Qualificatins frm Nn-UK based curses If yu were a candidate fr the Fundatin Degree ffering qualificatins frm nn-uk based curses the recmmendatins f the Natinal Academic Recgnitin Infrmatin Centre (NARIC) will have been used t establish equivalence t the minimum entry standards described abve. 2

3 If yu did nt receive yur secndary educatin thrugh the medium f English the University s Admissins Regulatins nrmally require that yu shuld nrmally have attained the equivalent f IELTS 6.0, Cambridge Prficiency, r TOEFL 550. Alternatively, an verall pass in the UETESOL exam wuld have been acceptable. Accreditatin f Prir Learning Under the University f Westminster Academic Regulatins yu may be awarded recgnitin fr yur previus learning thrugh the Accreditatin f Prir Certificated Learning (APCL) r Accreditatin f Prir Experiential Learning (APEL). This will nrmally be dne fr yu when yu apply fr the curse. Hwever the Prgramme Manager will cmplete an APCL r APEL frm with yur assistance making a recmmendatin abut yur claim which will be cnsidered by the APCL/APEL Bard at the University. Yu will then be ntified f the Bards decisin. This is a cmpletely independent prcess and is nt within the gift f either the Prgramme Manager r Liaisn Tutr. Shuld grunds fr additinal APCL s r APEL s cme t light and yu wish t apply fr them during the curse the Prgramme Manager will mentr and guide yu, thrugh the prcess. Fr APEL applicatins Fr APEL applicatins yu must be ver 21 and are required t prepare a prtfli f evidence t demnstrate that yu have the necessary learning t gain exemptins frm curse mdules. Fr APCL applicatins n entry Fr APCL applicatins n entry t the curse nrmally the fllwing will give a maximum f CAT credit pints under APCL fr cgnate curses: cgnate 10 unit (r 150 CAT pints) HNC with 2 years wrk experience and sme respnsibility cgnate 12 unit (r 180 CAT pints) HNC cgnate HND The 150 credit will be divided int 120 credits at Level 4 and 30 credits at Level 5 subject t the Fundatin Degree Prgramme Manager s advice and t the University s APCL/APEL prcedures. Maximum credit pints will nly have been awarded if these qualificatin fully match with yur Fundatin Degree mdules. The Fundatin Degree has been specifically designed t accept students frm cgnate HNC/D at the Cllege f Nrth West Lndn. The timetable has been cnfigured t match the APCL and APEL prfile s that students are able t enter directly int the final year f the part time Fundatin Degree prgramme with 150 APCL credits. 3

AIMS OF THE COURSE The aim f the curse is t prvide an educatinal experience fr students with a fcus n cnstructin management that includes preparatin fr a career in building prductin within the cnstructin sectr. Sensitise the student t the cnstructin management envirnment within which buildings are prduced rganisatins perate. 3. Engender an ethical apprach t decisin making, practice and prcedure. 4. Fr this reasn the Fundatin Degree is primarily based arund part time study which best facilitates this type f learning hwever where suitable wrk can be fund fr students then the curse may be ffered full time. All part time students will be sent by their emplyer and cme frm within cnstructin, prperty r related industries. Mst will be mature experienced individuals and many will cme frm a craft r technician backgrund and bring supervisry and managerial experience. Their cmpanies will supprt these students thrugh the Fundatin Degree curse because they are taking increasing respnsibility in their rganisatins and these students therefre need t develp new skills and aptitudes. There is hwever, a full time ptin and there is wrkplace learning built int the curse as an essential element in bth levels 4 and 5 (years ne and tw) f the full time curse. Full time students are expected t develp emplyment skills during the curse and it is the stated intentin f the curse that students will gain full time emplyment and change mde during the curse t cmplete the Fundatin Degree curse part time. These students will gain emplyment within cnstructin, prperty r related industries. The Fundatin Degree graduate will have the pprtunity t transfer nt the part time BSc Cnstructin Management with hnurs degree at the University f Westminster with 10 mdules f 15 credits each t cmplete the curse. This includes transitin studies (part time) f tw mdules f 15 credits. It is expected that students will be emplyed within cnstructin, prperty r related industries n entering their curse at the University f Westminster. Typically yu will wrk fr cnstructin rganizatins which may include cntracting rganizatins, wrking in-huse fr nn-cntracting rganizatins r similar. Transitin Studies Yu will prgress thrugh the transitin studies prgramme nt the: BSc with hnurs in Cnstructin Management part time curse accredited by the Chartered Institute f Building Transfer will nrmally be autmatic t the University f Westminster. Nrmally bth mdules f the transitin must be passed t prgress nt the BSc with hnurs hwever ne pass and ne taken may be accepted. Yur results will be cnsidered at the Subject Bard fr the Degree Prgramme. When yu transfer t the University f Westminster t cntinue yur studies n the hnurs degree prgramme yu will take the transitin prgamme which 5

6 cmprises tw level 5 mdules, a level that yu have already successfully studied at. This is designed t give yu experience f studying in a University envirnment and t adapt t the different teaching and learning styles, larger grups and mre independent study that yu will experience at the University. The transitin mdules are: Level 5 Level 5 Cnstructin Site Practice Building Services Engineering The University Mdular Regulatins assessment rules apply fr pass, taken/cndned credit and fail grades fr each mdule and will be used t calculate yur degree classificatin. The average marks f yur best seven mdules will be used t calculate yur degree classificatin at the University f Westminster because yu will have taken ten mdules at level 5. T cmplete yur chsen degree at the University yu will take eight 15 credit mdules at level 6 including all cre mdules specified fr yur degree curse. During the transitin prgramme yu will be required t meet with yur persnal tutr at the University f Westminster regularly s that any difficulties can be identified and reslved as early as pssible. 11 TEACHING, LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT METHODS Teaching, learning and assessment strategies are designed t develp cnfidence in nn-traditinal student grups and prgressively build the academic and wrk related skills s that they can successfully prgress int higher educatin. Many f the mdules use wrk-based inputs althugh the assessments are cllege based. This develps the student frm, what is fr mst, a practical familiar situatin and builds n their past experiences. During the curse all students will have gained wrk-based experiential learning thrugh wrking within related industries as part-time students based within cmpanies r full-time students based in clleges with part-time wrk within cmpanies. Due t the entrance requirements fr the Fundatin Degree and the characteristics f cnstructin curses, students will tend t be mature. The aims, utcmes and assessment criteria within each mdule are clearly stated and set ut within the curse curriculum making the develpmental apprach transparent. There is a significant element f curse/prject wrk and frmal examinatins are intrduced prgressively thrugh the curse. Data gathering using mentrs/facilitatrs at wrk, discussin grups, presentatins, wrkshps are all used t develp an independent, rbust and cnfident individual wh will be able t study effectively in a higher educatin envirnment. The acquisitin f transferable and specialized skills is designed t be cumulative as the curse develps, culminating in the applicatin f many f these skills in the integrated prject. The teaching and learning methds used include design studis, wrkshps, labratry-based mdules, traditinal lectures, discussins, seminars, tutrials, prject simulatins, case studies, rle playing and grup wrk, as apprpriate. The teaching, learning and assessment strategies fr each mdule are derived frm the curse and mdule aims and desired utcmes. Assessment strategies reflect the teaching and learning strategies by fcusing n frms f assessment which mre cmmnly replicate what happens in the wrk envirnment and are mre apprpriate t the experience f the lder experienced student frm the cnstructin and prperty sectrs. Typically this will relate t bservatin, analysis and prblem slving f wrk based situatins. This allws frmative feedback. Tests are kept in-class t be flexible, familiar and t give rapid feedback. T prgress frm Level 4 t Level 5 in part time study, a student must achieve an average f 40% acrss 120 credits. Hw d yu btain a pass r cndned credit in a mdule? A student may be awarded cndned credit at Levels 3 and 4 nly, where he/she has achieved: a) an verall mdule mark f greater than r equal t 30% but less than 40%; b) an verall mark f 40% r greater but nt reached the required qualifying mark(s) and/r qualifying set(s) as detailed in the mdule handbk; and 12

13 c) attempted all referred assessment as ffered by the Assessment Bard. Where a student, fllwing a referral pprtunity, is awarded cndned credit, the recrded mdule mark will be capped at 39%. Cndned credit will cunt twards any credit limits fr specified awards. Where a student is awarded cndned credit in a mdule but subsequently achieves an verall pass within a retake mdule, credit may cntribute nly nce t an award. Hw is yur award calculated? T qualify fr the award f Fundatin Degree in Science - Cnstructin Management, yu must have btained at least 240 credits including: passed 75 credits at Level 4 r higher and achieved at least a cndned credit in each f the remaining mdules wrth 45 credits at Level 4; and passed a minimum f 120 Credits at Level 5 r higher; and satisfied the requirements cntained within any curse specific regulatins fr the relevant curse scheme attempted mdules wrth n mre than 165 credits at Level 5 r higher. Please nte This prgramme specificatin prvides a cncise summary f QUALITY MANAGEMENT AND ENHANCEMENT Curse apprval, mnitring and review The curse was initially apprved by a University Validatin Panel in 2002 and subsequently revalidated the last being in The Panel included internal peers frm the University and external subject specialists frm academia and industry t ensure the cmparability f the curse t thse ffered in ther Universities and the relevance t emplyers. Peridic Curse Review helps t ensure that the curriculum is up-t-date and that the skills gained n the curse cntinue t be relevant t emplyers. The curse is mnitred each year by the Schl t ensure it is running effectively and that issues which might affect the student experience have been apprpriately addressed. Staff will cnsider evidence abut the curse, including the utcmes frm each Curse Cmmittee, evidence f student prgressin and achievement and the reprts frm External Examiners, t evaluate the effectiveness f the curse.
