PAGE 2 OF 6 GOAL OBJECTIVES To develop the skills of organizing and extracting clinical data for clinical care and learning To describe the standards and principles that are required to ensure data quality To demonstrate how data is obtained from your electronic medical record solution (EMR) OVERVIEW Before the use of EMRs, physicians had never had easily searchable nor reportable patient data available to them. In this new era of medicine, physician offices that are inputting standardized quality patient data in their EMR can use this information to inform themselves and their practice teams for the purposes of: preventative screening population health management chronic disease management quality assurance research revenue optimization practice management physician learning With a basic understanding of how to put quality information into an EMR in a standardized way, a clinic can obtain valuable information by conducting searches and creating reports that are beneficial to both the physician and care team. This course will offer the participant practical tips for clinics getting started with their EMR as well as guidance for the experienced user to obtain high quality data moving forward. The faculty will provide real examples, success stories and recommendations to avoid common pitfalls. As POSP peer leaders, the faculty members have a wealth of experience using their own EMRs and many hours of practice mentoring other EMR users in clinics across the province. Participants will leave with an understanding of best practices and lessons learned as well as practical tips and instructions from the workshops on how to input quality data into the EMR in order to obtain quality information and reports out. Alberta s three Vendor Conformance Usability Requirements (VCUR) 2008 EMR solutions: MD Physician Services, Med Access and Wolf Medical Systems are the basis for this course. Participants must be using one of these solutions to obtain value from this course. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptop, use the wireless internet access provided and login to their own EMR to practice during the workshops. EMR access will not be provided as part of the course. PLANNING COMMITTEE Kathleen Edwards MEd Heidi Fell MD CCFP FCFP Jocelyn Lockyer PhD Barbra McCaffrey BSc Dip Ed Diane Simpson PhD MDE
