What is the VCE? A two year academic program (year 11 &12) Requires a pass in a minimum of 16 units An English study is compulsory each year All other studies are by choice VET studies count toward the VCE ATAR calculated at the end of year 12
What is the ATAR? Australian Tertiary Admission Rank Based on VCE results for Unit 3&4 studies (year 12) Used for entry into Tertiary courses at University and TAFE
What is the VCAL? An alternative senior secondary certificate Practical and competency-based training Literacy, Numeracy & Personal Development Industry specific skills (VET studies) VCE units can be studied Workplace learning may be required
VCAL pathways Completing VCAL (Senior certificate) can lead to: TAFE programs (Diplomas and Certificates) Pathway programs leading into degree courses @ university Apprenticeships and Traineeships The workforce
Vocational Education & Training Practical hands-on training Industry skills eg. Cookery, Carpentry, Hairdressing, Competency based assessment Compulsory for VCAL VET studies contribute to the VCE A nationally recognised certificate on completion Offered at Hallam Senior College
VCE pathways Completing the VCE can lead to: Degree programs Pathways to degrees via TAFE Vocational Training Diplomas Independent Colleges Apprenticeships & Traineeships or full-time work
TAFE pathways to University TAFE studies after VCE or VCAL should be seriously considered Gain practical and industry recognised skills Small class sizes Credit into a degree from a TAFE Diploma (into second year) Chisholm Institute courses are recognised pathways into degrees at Monash, Deakin and La Trobe Universities
Choose Year 11 studies that you like that you are good at (look at your report first) Based on taster week experiences that are required for future tertiary courses Discuss with your teachers and parents Speak to the Careers office staff Keep your options open

Students online Students log on to subject selection online using login and pin provided from 15 th July Read about studies on-line Refer to the VCAA website for more detail about VCE study designs
Parents online Log into SSO and book a Course counselling appointment opens from tonight
Time line 15 th to 29 th July - Students go on-line to choose their Year 11 studies Wednesday 29 th July Course counselling Day 28 th July On-line course selection program closes for students
Course counselling appointment All parents/guardians must book in on-line and attend a Course Counselling appointment to confirm your child s 2016 program Course Counselling appointments 1pm-8pm Wednesday 29 th July No year 10 classes on that day
Expectations of Students Have met the pre-requisites and recommendations for the individual subjects Completed all set work requirements Completed all CAT s and subject examinations to a satisfactory standard Submitted work that is clearly his/her own Attended 80% or more of all timetabled classes
After Course Counselling No subject changes allowed after 29 th July If there are any timetable clashes, these will be resolved by an individual interview with Ms Tippett 14 th August is the final cut off date for any transfers to Hallam.
End of Year Transition 2 week transition program from year 10-11 23 rd November 4 th December Students are expected to attend every day of the transition program! After transition, requests for subject changes will be in writing and by appointment ONLY!
