2 Why Studying at Box Hill Institute is a Good Idea Box Hill Institute is a leading provider of apprenticeships and traineeships across a range of trade and industry areas. Apprenticeships and traineeships are delivered through a three-way partnership between the student, the employer and Box Hill Institute. If you are the student in this partnership, we will work closely with you to ensure you get the practicalbased training required to kick-start your career in the right direction. If you are the employer, we will work with you to ensure your worker s training enables you to build the capability of your workforce. Our programs are structured so businesses can develop suitably qualified and skilled apprentices and trainees with the right skills for today and the future We work with apprentices, trainees and employers to develop individualised training plans, customised to employment circumstances and the needs of the student and employer We provide flexible training, with a balance of on-the-job, face- to-face and online teaching Our expert teachers work with learners to help improve their standard of literacy and numeracy, identifying how these skills relate to their trade or industry area As well as specialist industry focused centres, our modern facilities include Authenticated Training Workplaces which reflect and replicate particular industry environments Box Hill Institute has a reputation for the most rigorous electrical apprenticeship course, so even though I had the option to go elsewhere I said, no, I want to go to Box Hill Institute, I want to be the best I can at it. 3 Benefits of an Apprenticeship or Traineeship For students: You work and get paid while you re earning and gaining great experience, including hands-on knowledge. When you complete an apprenticeship or traineeship, in addition to giving you the industry competencies your employer requires, it demonstrates your enthusiasm, commitment and a real interest in building your career. With an apprenticeship or traineeship you not only get skills for the job today, you get transferable skills which put you in good stead to progress in your chosen industry. If you desire, you can go on to start your own business. Mature workers as well young adults can start an apprenticeship or traineeship. For employers: Finding just the right employee for your business can be a challenge. An apprenticeship or traineeship solves this problem because the apprentice/ trainee can be trained to suit your company needs. Also, as an employer, it can be difficult to find the time to teach your employee all the skills they need. An apprenticeship or traineeship at Box Hill Institute equips students with those skills so they produce quality work to nationally recognised industry standards. There are government incentives for businesses to employ apprentices and trainees. Contact Jobs Plus Apprenticeships Services for more information The Global Education Network Short Exchange program to Singapore I was lucky enough to participate in really opened my eyes to international hair design the options and opportunities about what to do in the future. 4 What is the Difference? What is an apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are a great way to enter the workforce or to change your career. They provide practical, hands-on, accredited training while you work you earn while you learn. You must be employed, either full time or part time, to start an apprenticeship. Training can be undertaken on-thejob, off-the-job, or a combination of both, depending on your employer s needs. The duration of an apprenticeship is between three and four years nominally. This may vary depending on your employer and your determination to complete all competencies and assessments required for the qualification. How does a traineeship differ? Traineeships focus mostly on the non-traditional trade qualifications. As with apprenticeships, you learn on the job and you must be employed full time or part time. The main difference between an apprenticeship and a traineeship is the duration of the training. Most traineeships run for one year, however in some cases this could extend to three years. The industry and the qualification required will determine whether it is classed as an apprenticeship or a traineeship, and the length of time needed to complete the training. What about a pre-apprenticeship? A pre-apprenticeship course enables you to learn the basic skills of a trade and is a stepping stone to an apprenticeship. You don t need to be employed to do a pre-apprenticeship. Completing a pre-apprenticeship can give you an edge and impress potential employers looking to take on an apprentice. Elements of some preapprenticeships may reduce the study time in an apprenticeship. Pre-apprenticeships normally run for six months. 4 For the latest up-to-date information, please visit boxhill.edu.au
5 School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT) If you re a school student and you ve got an interest in a vocational career, you can get a head start by beginning an apprenticeship or traineeship while still working towards your senior secondary school certificate. A School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT) combines: Paid employment as an apprentice or a trainee Recognised, structured training with Box Hill Institute which is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) School studies you must be undertaking a VCE or VCAL program A SBAT can provide a pathway into a full time apprenticeship or traineeship when you ve completed your school studies. School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are open to students 15 years of age or over. Your secondary school must approve a SBAT training plan. The time commitment to a SBAT varies. The arrangements are agreed by the employer, Box Hill Institute and the school. In most cases a student can expect to be out of school two days a week for training and employment. A SBAT takes between one and four years to complete depending on the industry and the qualification. As with other apprenticeships and traineeships, you must find an employer and have a training contract prepared and processed by Jobs Plus Apprenticeships Services. I m really loving the study and the work. I like that when we come to Box Hill Institute we learn about different areas that we wouldn t have the opportunity at the moment to learn about in the workplace, for example the details of how the engines work. I never skip a class because I am always thinking about my future career and what I need to know to be the best mechanic I can be.
