They have so many questions, and a great imagination. The Diploma of Children s Services helped me to understand their development and how children grow and learn. As soon as I came to Open Day and saw the campus, I knew I wanted to study here. We did practical placement which I loved. We had two focus students that we had to observe, and plan experiences for them. After completing the Diploma I have now gone on to study the Bachelor of (Early Childhood). Studying at TAFE first was a great pathway to this degree. It really prepared me well and I already had a good understanding of children and their behaviours, rather than starting straight from high school. The Diploma also gave me quite a few credits towards the degree, which means I didn t have to undertake all of the first year courses again. 4 FEDERATION UNIVERSITY AUSTRALIA CAREER GUIDE

Professional Recognition Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) (Pending) Cassandra Hill Student Primary I attended the Gippsland Precinct at school and wasn t certain about what area to choose for a degree, so when applying for university I listed courses that interested me. I was offered a Bachelor of Primary place and deferred for a year, later deciding that education was definitely what I wanted to study. Like that light bulb moment children get when learning! The favourite thing about my course is placement as it puts everything you learn into perspective. I chose to become a student ambassador at university as I get to help local students realize, from a current student s perspective, that university is an amazing experience. The biggest difference between high-school and university is that you have to be an independent learner and self-motivated. Advice I would give my younger self whilst completing VCE is to not stress the small stuff, it all works out in the end. 6 FEDERATION UNIVERSITY AUSTRALIA CAREER GUIDE

Coming from a small regional town and being the first child in my family to commit to tertiary studies was rather daunting. Despite this, my transition from High School to university life was a breeze. Having lecturers and tutors that know you by name has given me a sense of belonging at this university. Living at the residence on campus is extremely convenient, as all my classes are only a short 5-minute walk. Having my course and accommodation fully organized has made me extremely excited about new opportunities that may arise. Studying has been such an enjoyable time for me.
