Our trainers are industry experienced practitioners who bring the subject matter to life in class and during workplace visits. 3 What is a school based traineeship? Often referred to as a SBAT, a school based traineeship combines paid work, training and school. Training is delivered by an RTO like Sage Institute of Education and takes place at school. Six hours per week is devoted to training, averaged over three periods of four months a year. As well as formal training, students undertake work placement where the skills and knowledge taught in the classroom are applied in a work setting. So they get paid whilst practising what they learnt in class. Who can do a SBAT? Students enrolled in VCE or VCAL Students 15 years of age and over An Australian citizen or permanent resident Students must be prepared to devote 13 hours per week to their program. At the conclusion of the course successful students receive a nationally recognised qualification that can be incorporated into their VCAL or VCE studies. School Based Traineeship Guide

4 Who are involved in a SBAT? The student Whilst undertaking a SBAT students will be working 7 hours per week and will be treated as an employee of a business, like an adult in the workforce, including 6 hours of formal training at school. The employer This will be the workplace and will be linked directly to the course students are undertaking. The Australian Apprenticeship Centre The AAC does most of its work behind the scenes. They register the training contract and work with the RTO to develop the training plan. Registered Training Organisation (RTO) This is the organisation, often referred to as TAFE (Technical and Further Education) that is responsible for the delivery and assessment of the nationally recognised qualification. They provide trainers in the classroom who also will visit the work place to ensure students are getting the opportunity to practice the skills taught in the classroom and to assess students progress against the training plan. School The school records studies on the Victorian Assessment Software System (VASS) to make sure the traineeship and hard work goes towards students VCAL or VCE studies. Parents/Guardians Must agree to the terms and conditions of the training contract and co-sign it if the student is under 18 years of age. 5 You get paid while you study a nationally recognised qualifi cation! What are the benefits of doing a SBAT? For the student You get paid whilst you study a nationally recognised qualification You receive a nationally recognised qualification upon successful completion of all requirements You are introduced to the workforce whilst still at school, often resulting in further employment at the conclusion of the course You receive credit towards your VCE or VCAL studies You get a real life insight into the industry you are interested in You broaden your study options For the school All course material, delivery and assessment activity is managed by Sage Institute of Education Fewer changes of direction or study by students due to Sage Institute s extensive interview program to ascertain student suitability for SBAT placement Course results delivered before VASS cut off deadline Training plans provided before course begins for inclusion in VASS system Work placement program managed from start to finish. This includes identifying suitable workplaces, managing student interviews and coaching students prior to interviews where necessary Account Manager to provide a single point of contact for all student queries For the employer Recruit young and enthusiastic part time staff Receive incentives from the Federal government (see AAC) Grasp the opportunity to give back to the industry by assisting with the development of future employees in your chosen field Develop strong and rewarding bonds with local schools and community Develop your existing staff in roles as workplace mentors of SBAT s Frequently asked questions What is an RTO? Sage Institute of Education is a Registered Training Organisation, delivery TAFE (Technical and Further Education). They provide students with training that results in qualifications and statements of attainment that are recognised and accepted by industry and other educational institutions throughout Australia. How much do students get paid? The national training wage hourly rate. Currently $9.19 for year 11 students and $10.14 for year 12 students. How long is the course? One school year. How does doing a SBAT benefit my VCE score? An SBAT counts like a 5th or 6th subject. The average of your primary four subjects is divided by 10 and added to your ATAR.
