Swinburne pathways Swinburne is one of the few institutions in Australia to offer both TAFE and university courses. That allows us to offer our students unique pathways from one level of study to another. Guaranteed Entry Scheme We re leading the way when it comes to providing students with secured, continuous study options. Our Guaranteed Entry Scheme (GES) provides our diploma and advanced diploma students with a guaranteed university place, provided they successfully complete their TAFE-level course. This assurance takes the guesswork out of tertiary pathways, and gives you a guaranteed option for your university studies. The table on page 10 is a snapshot of some of the guaranteed pathways available. You may also be eligible to enter other specialised degrees. For a complete listing of all the GES pathways, check the website: Under the GES, students enrolling in Swinburne diploma and advanced diploma courses can commence their university degree course from Pathways Direct Through Pathways Direct, Swinburne TAFE students can apply directly to higher education faculties for admission into a degree program. The application is handled internally by Swinburne and does not require a VTAC application. Preference will be given to applicants with credit grade average (65% or above) and to those with no fails in their final year of study. Pathways go both ways We know that everyone has different educational needs and that s why our extensive pathway options not only go from TAFE to university but from university to TAFE. We also offer concurrent study options, meaning you can undertake a TAFE course while studying a university degree. I got credit from my TAFE studies towards my university degree. I chose the course because I have a passion for attractions and love exploring new destinations. I enjoyed the diversity of the programs with hands on training at TAFE combined with strong academic skills learned at university. Some of the subjects were very involving especially running an airline, where weekly profit results were calculated from actions the group decided in the previous class. I currently work for Qantas Holidays they recognised the benefit of my tourism/business background during my application. I believe my qualification was a key advantage I held over other candidates applying for the position. 6 TAFE courses Swinburne Large Training Provider of the Year When you choose a TAFE course at Swinburne you re choosing to study at the 2009 Large Training Provider of the Year. The award recognises innovation and excellence in training. That sounds good on paper, but what does it mean for you? It means you can come to Swinburne knowing you ll get more than a great course. You ll have access to high-quality student services and get the support you need to make the most of your study experience. What kind of TAFE course can you do? The course you choose depends on what you want to achieve. Certificate III and IV courses often called Skills Building, provide entry into various trades, traineeships or other jobs that require skills and knowledge beyond a basic level. Diplomas and advanced diplomas often called Skills Deepening, help you to progress to a higher level or to get you started in a para-professional job. They might just give you the skills to get a promotion, or the confidence to handle increased expectations at work. There are many opportunities it s all a matter of helping you get the education you need to get you where you want to be. Training provider of the year Swinburne TAFE won the Large Training Provider of the Year award at the 2009 Australian Training Awards, the peak national awards for vocational training, recognising innovation and excellence in the training sector across Australia. Showing employers the skills you have learnt Employers tell us that knowing how to do the job is not enough anymore. They have told us that they want individuals who are adaptable and able to work in complex environments. Many employers see employability skills as being just as, or even more important than technical skills. Your studies at Swinburne will not only help you develop employability skills but will provide you with a Skills Passport to add to your résumé. You start with a record of your existing skills and capabilities and as you develop new skills they are recorded in your Skills Passport. This shows employers not only that you can do the job, but how you will go about the job and what added value you will bring to it. Our teachers are experienced in their industries and recognised as experts in their field, so you get the best possible chance to be skilled in the very qualities employers look for. So you re more likely to graduate with the skills to help you get a better job faster. Recognition for the skills you already have If you have previous work experience or education, you might be closer to a qualification than you realise. We learn in many different ways and the skills we develop through work or personal experience need to be recognised. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) recognises any prior knowledge and experience and measures it against the qualification in which you are enrolled. You may not need to complete all of a training program if you already possess some of the competencies taught in the program. Why should you apply for RPL? Eliminate or reduce the need for training in skills and knowledge you already have Save time in attending classes and completing unnecessary work Save money on textbooks and learning resources Complete your qualification in less time Advance more quickly to a higher-level qualification What are the pathways from TAFE to higher education?
