Vocational Education and Training (VET) Options 1
Vocational Education and Training (VET) Students are offered a wide variety of VET programs that will contribute to their VCAL or VCE. Please see the online handbook and VET form for details. An online application will be made on behalf of students following receipt of $400 deposit and the return of completed forms Students will be informed if their application is successful. 6
Why Consider a VET Course? VET programs allow students to gain a TAFE/industry qualification while still at secondary school. This qualification is able to be counted towards VCE or VCAL More and more, students in other schools are accessing VET courses. If your son/daughter doesn t attempt a VET course and wants to gain an apprenticeship or traineeship, they are disadvantaging themselves. 7
Why Consider a VET Course? Students will be able to make more informed decisions about their career interests This qualification may assist students to gain full or even part-time employment while continuing on with further study Many employers are aware of the availability of VET courses as part of senior studies. Some are now requiring that particular VET courses are completed as part of the qualification required to get an apprenticeship/traineeship 8
What Should You Take Into Consideration? Please note also that the details of how programs will be delivered are still being negotiated. It is important that you consider: how you will travel to your VET provider; the possibility that the course may be timetabled outside normal school hours and work placement requirements. Although these programs involve practical hands on tasks, each one also involves theory and the completion of a range of written tasks. 9
What Should You Take Into Consideration? Almost all VET courses take a minimum of two years to complete before you are able to qualify for the Certificate. You must complete first year competencies if you are to gain a Year 12 sequence from the second year competencies. Almost all of the courses on offer have Year 12 status. There are a small number that do not e.g. VCE VET Retail which gives students 3xYear 11 units. 10
Concluding Remarks We are hoping that all students make the most of the educational opportunities being offered. Students seeking an apprenticeship or traineeship now have a range of options open to them to help them succeed in this goal. We are urging all students to remain at school and complete Year 12. It is expected that in your working life, you will change careers up to 7 times and your occupation/place of work up to 17 times. To do this successfully, you need to have a sound educational background to draw from. 11
