Quiz: Formal Commands

Progressive Quizzes! KEY: I have been hesitant to publish quizzes on TpT for fear that students could purchase them as a means of academic dishonesty. In light of that possibility, I am not publishing the answer keys. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to post a question on TpT and I ll be happy to help. DESIGN: I designed these quizzes in a process format with the primary goal of helping students understand what they know and what they need to work on. Most students do well on the first two parts and struggle most on the last two. The first part always asks about basic process. If a student has errors in this part, it probably means that the student has not studied at all. The second part is basic conjugation charts. I find that students often want a place to quickly jot down the endings of a particular verb group to reference throughout the test. This allows them to show their knowledge and create a reference chart for later. The third part is conjugating to a subject and translating what they mean. You may want to check ahead of time to make sure that your students have learned the definitions of the verbs in the translation section. If there is one or two that they don t know, you could just write that verb and its definition on the board rather than abandoning the quiz. The fourth part (with the beginning present tense quizzes) asks students to use verbs in this group to create their own sentences. This requires conjugation, definition, sentence structure, and creativity. The fifth part is often the hardest conjugating verbs in the context of a story. It requires students to find the subject of the sentence and conjugate the verb. It involves more reading comprehension. SELF-ASSESSMENT AND RETEST: Each quiz also has a follow up self-assessment to help students figure out which skills they have mastered and which skills they may want to study before the next time. Each quiz also comes with a retake quiz. It is the most simple retake ever, and if I use it consistently, it leads to great results. Students have to say what they messed up the first time, show evidence of continued remedial work, and then show that they have mastered the material since then. My goal is to put the work on the students shoulders to prove their learning rather than my shoulders to keep creating test version A, B, C, etc. If they can t answer the first couple of questions, then they clearly aren t ready to do a retake. Students can earn back up to half of the points they lost if they do well on the retake. PROCESS: If you are interested, this is how I run the process in my class: I give the quiz. After students are done, they turn it in to me in one of two piles I want mine graded in class for faster results or Profe, please grade mine. Once all quizzes are in, I pass out the ones to be graded in class (making sure each quiz goes to someone who isn t friends with the test taker). I post the answer key on the screen and students grade the non-subjective sections. (They leave the creative sentence part for me.) I quickly grade the ones that wanted me to grade them. Students return quizzes to their owners and each student gets a self-assessment. Students complete and turn in the self-assessment. If they want to do a retake, they have to bring evidence of further practice since the first quiz, and then they get the retake form. If they show significant work and improvement, I ll give them back up to half of the points they lost the first time. If they don t show significant work and improvement, their score remains the same.
