Regent Park Duke of York Children s Foundation Lay-Up is an initiative of Regent Park Duke of York Children s Foundation (RPDYF) The mission of Regent Park Duke of York Children s Foundation (RPDYF) is to provide support and leadership opportunities for children attending Regent Park public schools The organization was founded in 1994 in response to what concerned educators, parents, and volunteers saw as a lack of opportunities for children to participate in activities in the community both before and after school The program works with children and families that are in need of support by providing them with access to literacy and art therapy programs, summer camps, athletics programs and other community initiatives RPDYF s goal is to ensure equal access for all children to these programs in order to give them the same opportunities and experiences that are enjoyed by kids across the GTA Although RPDYF has traditionally focused on initiatives in the Regent Park community, the Lay-Up initiative will focus on a number of low-income neighbourhoods that are able to benefit from the program Programs Supported by RPDYF Daily Milk Program Art Therapy Program Kilcoo Summer Camp Sponsorship Computer lab with 30 work stations Play Therapy Program A Kinder Gym Program Grade 6 Graduating Class Camping Trip Literacy Program Breakfast Program Christmas Hampers for families in partnership with Heart to Hand Organization Lay-Up Youth Basketball Scholarship 9

Provide Practical Education: Develop participants practical skills (i.e. communication) and knowledge skills (i.e. healthy living). Develop Academic Based Interests: Create lessons and activities which tie back to academic subjects like reading, mathematics, and sciences. To facilitate the program, Lay-Up employs several resources: Volunteers and Coaches: Trained and highly committed to the core curriculum goals. Guest Speakers: motivational speakers, social workers, athletes, nutritionists, police officers, lawyers, doctors, and more Partnerships: work with other organizations to host unique sessions (e.g. Visions for Science) Basketball Passport : Used to record lessons to help participants retain what they learn and become Lay-Up Basketball Citizens Rewards: Those that best display and apply social curriculum topics receive rewards (including free sports tickets through partnership with Kids Up Front). At the end of camp, every child is given an award related to basketball or the social program. 3

Community Integration 4 Over our first two years, Lay-Up s focus has been on connecting with interested youth and providing them with a once a life time experience. Lay-Up s goal of Community Integration is to broaden our scope in order to further develop the ways we benefit our communities.
