Page 3 Who We Are The Brain Injury Association of Waterloo-Wellington is a not-for-profit charity that provides support, advocacy, and programs to survivors of acquired brain injury and the children and youth in our community. We offer programs at a day program called The Opportunity Centre in partnership with Traverse Independence, where members can come from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and participate in various social and leisure programs. We also offer a community education program called Lidz on Kidz which allows us to visit area shools promoting wearing the gear and playing safe with the proper helmet as well as a Caregiver s Support Group. Introduction of Board Members 6. Adjournment After our Annual General Meeting the Opportunity Centre is having our Thanksgiving Luncheon all those in attendance at the AGM are welcome to join us.

The Brain Injury Association of Waterloo - Wellington. Page 5 Message from Board of Directors and Executive Director BIAWW s Board of Directors and Executive Director have had a very busy year. The autumn of 2010 provided members and sponsors with an opportunity to mingle at our Hawaiian Oyster Odyssey. Our Care to Share Support Group for caregivers started in October and proved to be very popular. Drawing on the expertise of our members and volunteers, we were able to produce thousand of glass pieces that were available throughout the community at various venues. A large crowd gathered at our Brilliance in Music in November to hear the Opportunities and Errol Blackwood. To start the golf season off right, we hosted our annual indoor virtual golf tournament at Golf Without Limits and then to end the season, we golfed at Tralee in September. Our volunteer lunch in February and the June Open House were well attended and helped to showcase our agency and members. We all worked together to end the summer at the annual Kitchener Blues Festival. Advocacy is a significant part of the mandate of the BIAWW and our education committee, Lidz on Kidz, has been active in supporting that goal in schools in our region. Did you see our Grand River Transit Bus Ads supporting the use of helmets? In conjunction with the Kitchener Rangers, we have developed a Concussion Awareness Card which will be distributed in the community. Looking beyond our association, our Executive Director has attended Provincial meetings at OBIA and conference planning sessions. The newly formed group of ABI professionals in our community has also given her, the opportunity to network with other support agencies. This year we reviewed our Bylaws, Policies and Procedures and approved amendments. Our new Governance committee has helped to secure new board members. Our new office assistant, supported by an Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant, has helped the Executive Director in completing databases, volunteer management, community outreach and social media updating. We, the board and our Executive Director, have ensured that the mission, vision and values of the BIAWW were upheld in all aspects of our work this year. Looking forward to the next year, our interaction with survivors, the community and our Provincial Organization will continue.

Giving support, hope and answers to survivors of acquired brain injury Page 6 STAFF Executive Director: Patti Lehman Patti was hired in June 1999 and is in her 12 th year in this position. She is looking forward to another year of leading the Association towards more and more services and support for our members and the community. Office Assistant/Fundraising Manager: Robin Harrington Robin joined the BIAWW in February 2011 and she is assisting Patti with administrative tasks, volunteer management, database development, scheduling of glass shows and fundraising. She has 10+ years experience working and volunteering within the non-profits in our community. Newsletter Staff: Kim Collier Kim has been working part-time as our newsletter editor for the past 9 years. Kim s background includes graduation from Sheridan College in Art, and Conestoga College in Recreational Programming. She has been employed as an Art Teacher at Conestoga College, as well as a Paste-Up Technician. Kim continues to bring creativity and fun to our monthly newsletter. School Program Staff: Kim Knispel Kim has been with Lidz on Kidz since 2007 and took over as the education/event co-coordinator last fall. She enjoys working with the youth in our community and is currently heading up a concussion awareness program. She lives in Kitchener with her husband and 2 children. Music Program: Bruce Mutton Bruce Mutton has been working with the BIAWW for the past 8 and a half years coordinating and facilitating our music program. Bruce has over 20 years experience in the music field and has a degree in Recreation with a major in Music. He plays numerous instruments but considers his voice to be his primary instrument. He has been the driving force behind the success of this program that has won both provincial recognition and acclaim. Bookkeeper: Carrie Mulrooney Carrie has been doing our books for 10 years and is under contract with us for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

According to the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy; Volunteer Calculator the hours equal $57,732.15. Your time and dedication is greatly appreciated by the BIAWW. Positions filled by volunteers this year included: Board of Directors, Musicians, Music Program Assistants, Glass Fusing Programs, Trade Shows, Special Event Volunteers, Communication Committee, Fundraising Committee, Care to Share Support Group, Zehrs tapes, graphic designers, webpage designer, IT specialist, WII facilitator and 3 rd party fundraisers. On April 14 we hosted a volunteer appreciation luncheon with Traverse Independence to recognize our volunteers. This luncheon was held at the Opportunity Centre. We recognize that the work the Association does would not be completed if it wasn t for the support of our volunteers. You are each appreciated and we thank you. Page 9 Proposed Board of Directors for 2011-12 Angie Cunningham Angie Cunningham was very happy to become a BIAWW board member in the spring of this year. Angie has enjoyed volunteering and participating at numerous events prior to joining the board. She has been working in the field of rehabilitation for over 15 years as a rehabilitation therapist assistant, specifically with survivors of an acquired brain injury. She has a BA from the University of Western Ontario and has attended numerous courses and seminars to broaden her skills. Angie is a strong supporter of pet therapy and therapeutic horse back riding. She has two horses of her own that she rides regularly through the town of Ayr. Dianne dejong Dianne is an accident benefits specialist and works with a local personal injury lawyer. She works with individuals that have been injured in automobile accidents and advocates on their behalf with the auto insurance companies to ensure that all of the individuals receive their full health and rehabilitation benefits. Dianne became involved with the BIAWW due to working directly with the families and the individuals who have suffered an acquired brain injury. Dianne currently acts as Vice-President for the Board of Directors of the BIAWW. Todd Gillies Todd is a social worker specializing in trauma, primarily working with survivors of motor vehicle accidents and their families. It has been an honour to serve on the board for the BIAWW for the past two years and feel that this association serves a vital purpose to this community, providing invaluable support to survivors and their families. As a musician Todd was instantly drawn to the Wednesday jams and helped to develop the Brilliance in Music event as well as chairing the subcommittee for fund-raising. He hopes to continue the opportunity to assist in further developing this event in the future and other fund raising events in the upcoming year. Dr. Steven Jett Dr. Steve Jett is a Psychologist who practices in Cambridge. He has been a board member for 2 years. Dr. Jett provides counselling and assessment services to adults and couples. People also seek his services to assist with returning to work after an injury. In addition, Dr. Jett co-leads a group for caregivers of people with brain injuries. He also helps people to improve memory and attention by using a specialized computer training program. Joanne Nunn Joanne Nunn works as an occupational therapist for a local company. She works with individuals who have been involved in car accidents, work related accidents or who suffer from a disease or disability. She provides assistance with the transition from hospital to home and provides support in the home such as equipment, home modifications, education and cognitive rehabilitation. She developed her interest in the BIAWW via a family member who suffered a traumatic brain injury as well as being involved in the rehabilitation process. Joanne Nunn acts as President for the BIAWW. Rob Soosaar As a new member of the BIAWW Board of Directors, Rob looks forward to applying his background in business, technology and research to help the Association achieve its marketing and fundraising goals. Rob is currently Director of Business Development at a Waterloo Health Services company. He is also involved in technology startup projects and an active member of the local Communitech technology organization. Prior to taking on his current role in the health care industry, Rob held senior management roles at several regionally based technology companies. Rob works with the Mary Allen Neighbourhood Association to ensure an outdoor ice rink is available and volunteers his time with the Out of the Cold program.

Giving support, hope and answers to survivors of acquired brain injury Page 10 Dietlind Stager Dietlind is a brain injury survivor and has been on the board for three years. She was a teacher and joined the Biaww in 2002. She is on the MAC Council and regularly volunteers in our Glass Fusing Program. Zena Thomas Zena Thomas is Area Director with a Home Health Care Provider covering the Kitchener/Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph areas. They provide health care services for various clients, from catastrophic, ABI and MVA, to those requiring personal and nursing care. She joined the Board in June of this year when her predecessor moved to another position within the company. As well, she volunteers with other organizations that provide care and assistance within the community. In her current role, she feels very strongly about working with and giving back to the community.
