THE DELAWARE FINANCIAL LITERACY INSTITUTE~ THE MONEY SCHOOL DFLI is a not for profit 501 (c)(3) organization whose mission is to help individuals especially those of low to moderate income become equipped with the tools to get their financial lives in order so that they can become self-sufficient and enjoy financial wellbeing over time The Delaware Financial Literacy Institute (DFLI) is the umbrella organization which sponsors and administers The Money School as well as entrepreneurship and savings programs. DFLI is not a state agency; it is funded by contributions from corporations, foundations, and individuals. QUICK FACTS DFLI s Money School: Offers over 600 free financial and business start up classes across the state annually. Is a community of learners Is a school without walls Has more than 100 volunteer instructors and experts from the non-profit, corporate, and government sectors Students are able to register for courses 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, online or with DFLI s toll-free number, More than 7,500 classes have been held since DFLI was incorporated in 2001.

2 The Money School The Money School, the signature program of the Delaware Financial Literacy Institute, was established in The Money School brings community-based financial education to adults across the state. Classes are scheduled on a wide variety of subjects from basic money management to investing and planning for retirement. Additionally, thousands of residents attend special request classes held at work sites, conferences, and religious and community organizations. Visit for a full class listing. 3 National Entrepreneurship Week Presents: The Coalition of Organizations for Delaware Entrepreneurship (CODE) CODE is a state-wide coalition organized in 2007 to support the Delaware small business community by creating awareness of the rich resources and opportunities available across the state. Mission To provide the Delaware small business community and the public with support, networking opportunities, and awareness of and access to resources. Leadership/ Development The Delaware Financial Literacy Institute (DFLI) is the lead organization and fiscal agent for CODE. As the fiscal agent of CODE, DFLI seeks and manages funds. Partners Partners are non-profit organizations, government agencies, higher education institutions and businesses that offer resources to the small business community and the public and support the efforts of CODE. 4 Chasing the Dream is a five-day camp that focuses on entrepreneurship as a viable career option. Campers, students entering 5 th 8 th grades, learn how to develop an idea, create a basic business plan, and run their own business during the camp s Market Day. State Treasurer Velda Jones- Potter with a camper During the camp, students: learn about entrepreneurship through hands-on business experiences. Meet successful entrepreneurs. Identify their own basic entrepreneurial skills and traits. Visit local businesses. Develop plans to run their own businesses. Learn about marketing. Learn about profit and loss. 5 MORE DFLI PROGRAMS! From Purses to Portfolios A unique multi-faceted program created in 2004 to encourage women to take control of their finances through attending Money School classes. Governor Jack Markell, DFLI Executive Director Ronni Cohen, and DFLI Senior Associate Director Karen Graham at the 2009 From Purses to Portfolios Celebration The Money Rules Summit for High School Students A one day seminar created in 2005 to teach high school juniors the value of saving and budgeting as well as the costs and benefits of credit. 6 Money Talk$ Assists parents and teachers in developing a financial dialogue with youth and includes the Citi Summer Institute for Teachers and an electronic newsletter. Bank At School Teaches young students financial management by allowing them to open savings accounts and make weekly deposits at their school bank branch, nurturing the ethic of saving, especially critical in today s economy. ME (Meaningful Economics & Entrepreneurship) Competition In partnership with the University of Delaware Center for ME (Meaningful Economics and Entrepreneurship) Competition- This statewide academic event brings together 500 third-sixth graders from across the state who have the opportunity to show their skills in personal finance, economics, and entrepreneurship. 7 First State Saves -- Part of the national marketing campaign America Saves, is designed to encourage people to save regularly and build wealth. DFLI is the lead agency in a coalition of partners who provide financial education and access to low and no-cost savings products First State Saves Day Rashmi Rangan, Esq., Executive Director of DCRAC, was awarded the 2009 First State Savings Star Award for her commitment to financial education and her advocacy on behalf of Delawareans.
