1 Laurel Ruff School SAN JUAN UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Family Bulletin October 2014 Hello Laurel Ruff community, Thanks to all who attended Back to School night last month; as you can see from the attached collage it was a positive kick-off to the 2014/15 school year. Our student workers prepared and served a delicious meal, and were especially appreciative of the community donations to the 'tip jar' ($189 was collected). Thanks to your generosity each student worker received $9 of WALK FOR THE TIGERS At Laurel Ruff, our Mission is to Educate Students in The Least Restrictive Environment As They Attain Their Maximum Potential. tip money, and learned a valuable lesson about tips, wages and the importance of customer service. As we progress into October our calendar of events is packed! WALK FOR THE TIGERS, our first fundraising effort for the year is coming up on Thursday October 16 at 8:00A.M. Packets were sent home last month. Proceeds will directly support each student s homeroom class. This year we will not participate in Mighty Milers as this east coast based program has exceeded its capacity. However, given that physical fitness is an essential quality of life component, we will design a new incentive program for students who document their physical activities. Walk for the Tigers is the kick-off event for our new incentive program. Additionally, we invite all students, staff, family members and interested community members to start training for the 2015 Race for the Stars fundraising fun run scheduled for April 26; (stay tuned for details). BOO BASH 2014 is almost here! Friday October 24 from 6 to 8:30 P.M. Advance tickets are now on sale! Purchase Boo-Bash tickets in our office for $5 each (see attached flyer & order form). Advance ticket sales allow us to plan quality refreshments, and this year advance ticket holders will receive a bonus goodie bag and commemorative photo. As part of our positive character traits program we are pleased to announce that 36 students were awarded vouchers for free dance tickets as a reward for absolutely perfect attendance (not one period missed) during the month of September. Students who exemplify the positive character traits may also be awarded free dance vouchers by a teacher. Students should trade in the vouchers for dance tickets at the front office. October is the last full month of instruction before we head into the holiday season. Students seem to be enjoying their fall semester electives and on-campus vocational training. Several students recently started off campus vocational training placements, and over 85 students are participating in our Special Olympics weekly bowling practice. As we approach the half-way point of the semester, we are starting to contemplate master schedule changes and ARC registration for the 2 nd semester. The agenda Laurel Ruff's October site council meeting scheduled on Tuesday October 14, at 2:45 PM has been publicly posted and a copy is attached. Keep up with Laurel Ruff happenings by monitoring our master calendar of events (copy attached). I hope to see you at the Boo Bash on October 24 th If you have questions/needs please contact us at or me at [email protected]. Thanks for your ongoing support of Laurel Ruff students and programs. HAPPY OCTOBER!!!
