SAFETY AND GYMNASTICS DUTY OF CARE
Safety is Everyone s Responsibility 20
PHYSICAL CONTACT IN GYMNASTICS
In sports, Physical contact, regardless of gender, must be discretionary and appropriate to the teacher s/ instructor s role and responsibilities. Generally, physical contact should only be used if the aim is: To render first aid to a student. To prevent injury (e.g. spotting, catching). To evacuate a student. To develop and correct sports skills and techniques. To meet the requirement of the sport.
In gymnastics, Physical contact is often necessary for demonstration, assistance, spotting and safety purposes, including unplanned catching or spotting to prevent injury. Example of some of these situations are: When demonstrating or guiding movement pattern for learning of new technique and skills, such as a new tumbling move; When correcting or refining technique and posture; When assisting movement, balances, stretches and weight-bearing movements; When providing safety and confidence spotting for learning of new skills.
The gymnastics teacher should require the coach To understand that the need for physical contact should be minimised as much as possible; To explain to the student(s) and teacher-in-charge at the beginning of the programme the rationale and description for physical contact that is necessary for the sport; To make the placement of the contact (e.g. shoulder, hips) explicit to the student(s).;
The gymnastics teacher should require the coach To ensure that the student(s) give consent when physical contact is necessary for the development of the skill; To ask the student(s) to voice concerns if the physical contact makes them feel uncomfortable, distressed, embarrassed or threatened, and in such case(s), the physical contact should be withdrawn immediately. To ensure that the physical contact is in the presence of others, including the teacher-in-charge; To know that the touching of the genital or chest areas, and parts in close proximity to these, is not allowed.
