The range f learning activities and assessments prvide a gd variety f pprtunities fr students bth t develp skills in ASL and t gain an understanding f hw t cmmunicate in a variety f situatins. The pprtunities that students may have t bserve and interview ASL speakers, as well as t practice in the language lab, appear t be especially valuable. The curse seems t fit well with ULO 10 if students understand that texts can be bth written and visual and that there is an essential relatinship between signed and written language. In ASL, there is n written language. ASL is used fr expressive and receptive skills. English (as a secnd language fr many) is used as the written language. ASL des pssess signed literature (narrative, petry, drama, etc.), parallel t the ral traditin in spken languages, befre technlgy allwed ASL signed literature t be captured n vide rather than n the written page.
