HISTORY: ACCOMMODATIONS: The historical roots of The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe dates back to the 1840's when a 9,000-acre land grant was deeded by Spain to Juan Maria Osuna, the first mayor of Pueblo de San Diego. In 1906, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad purchased the land to cultivate eucalyptus trees to convert into railroad ties. When the land proved too soft, the railroad company formed the Santa Fe Land Improvement Company to develop the property. In 1922 the architectural firm of Requa and Jackson were retained to give the dream shape and a gifted young architect named Lillian Rice oversaw the project. The first building, called La Morada was built to provide accommodations to prospective property owners. La Morada was transferred to private ownership in 1940 to the Royce Family and renamed The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe offers 80 deluxe rooms, suites and private cottages, most of which are located in charming cottage buildings with Spanish-tiled roofs. Many of The Inn s guest rooms offer the added ambiance of wood-burning fireplaces. The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe offers several types of deluxe accommodations.
