APPENDIX 6: DEFINITIONS Assessment: A way for us to know if you have achieved the learning outcomes of a course of study, which may include assignments, examinations, report writing, practical tasks, projects, block courses, and on-the-job work. There are two main types of assessment. Formative assessment: this is work that helps both you and us see how you are doing, but which doesn t contribute to your fi nal grade. Summative assessment: this is work that measures your achievement and contributes to your fi nal result. Assessments can be either compulsory or voluntary, but we recommend you do the voluntary ones as they help you see how you are doing with the course and highlight any problems early enough so we can deal with them. Diploma: A qualifi cation consisting of six 20-credit courses, which constitutes a defi ned area of specialisation. Core course: A compulsory course within a qualifi cation. Elective course: A non-compulsory course. You can choose from a list of elective courses to make up credits to fi nish your qualifi cation.
