2 WELCOME TO OPEN POLYTECHNIC Whether you are looking to improve your career prospects, or just learn something new, we can help you achieve your goal. We specialise in open learning learning that gives you more freedom to decide what you study and where you study. Our courses are specifically designed for delivery by distance, which means you can fit your study around your life. And just because you are learning by distance, it doesn t mean you have to do it alone. You will have access to your tutors and lecturers by or phone and to other students studying the same course through the Online Campus, the student support section of our website. It is our goal to make sure that you enjoy your study and that you succeed. So welcome to learning for today s world, and congratulations on taking up the challenge of further education. 3 Certificate of Achievement in Interior Design & Decorating Qualification code: OP3142 Level: 3 This qualification has been developed by Open Polytechnic and Resene Paints Limited in conjunction with well-known interior designer Sylvia Sandford. The course material is easy to follow and contains tips from Sylvia to help you on the way. There are self-check tests and learning activities that allow you to check your own progress, and Sylvia s team of interior designers will give you feedback on the projects you submit. Qualification Once you have completed all 12 courses you can apply to receive the Certificate of Achievement in Interior Design & Decorating. skills you will gain When you have completed this qualification, you will have: A broad range of design skills An awareness of influences on current design The ability to apply design principles, including planning, colour and lighting, to practical design tasks A variety of career opportunities, such as consulting, design work, or assisting kitchen or bathroom designers, architects or other professional industry specialists. 1

4 qualification structure This qualification is made up of 12 courses. Each course focuses on a specific aspect of interior design and includes case studies and design activities to help you extend your knowledge. 5 General information Assessment This qualification is internally assessed, with an assessment at the end of each course. The assessments are made up of case studies and projects which you will need to complete and submit to your tutor. Entry requirements To successfully complete this qualification, you need to have an eye for detail and colour and the ability to perform self-directed research and present work in an attractive and professional manner. To enrol in this qualification, you need to have: Passes in certificate qualification s or courses as considered appropriate by Open Polytechnic OR An overseas qualification assessed to be equivalent to the above by Open Polytechnic or the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. If you are over 20 years of age and have other relevant educational qualifications, work or life experience you may be eligible for entry, subject to approval from Open Polytechnic s Academic Registrar. English language You need to be able to read and write well in English so you can write your assignments and understand written English course materials. Study time The time you will need to complete your studies will vary depending on your own knowledge and experience. However, it should take approximately 100 hours to complete each course. 3

6 Fees All fee information is available on our website is Fees are expressed in NZ$ and are inclusive of GST. The GST amount will be deducted if you are living overseas. Fees shown in this brochure are correct at the time of publication and may be subject to change. Exact fees will be confirmed as part of your enrolment. New Zealand students A New Zealand student is any New Zealand citizen, including citizens or permanent residents of the Cook Islands, Tokelau or Niue studying there or in New Zealand; New Zealand permanent residents living in New Zealand; and Australian citizens living in New Zealand. For more information contact us see the last page of this brochure for contact details. An international student is anyone who doesn t fit the description of a New Zealand student. International students in New Zealand We can only accept you as an international student studying in New Zealand if you have a valid work permit with a Variation of Conditions that allows you to work and study part time. We cannot accept international students studying on a student permit. International students living in New Zealand or overseas, and New Zealand permanent residents overseas, are subject to special conditions set by the New Zealand Government. Administration fee You will need to pay a non-refundable $55 administration fee with your first enrolment in each academic year. 4

7 Overseas handling If you live overseas, you will need to pay an extra, international handling charge. The amount of this fee will depend on where you live. The overseas handling fee will be added to your course fees when you enrol. Course materials You will need paper, coloured pencils and other basic drawing and writing equipment. For some of the courses you will also need a scale ruler that has at least 1:100, 1:50 and 1:20 scales on it. Loans, allowances & other funding Student loans and allowances are administered by StudyLink. We cannot confirm your enrolment or send your course materials until your fees have been paid. 8 Enrolment To enrol, fill in the enclosed Application for Enrolment form and return it to us in the freepost envelope provided. Your enrolment is valid for 32 weeks. We recommend that you only enrol in two courses at a time. You must complete all of the courses in the order they re listed. This is because the programme has been structured so that each course builds upon the skills learnt in the previous course. Your tutor You will have a tutor for each course you study. Your tutor is there to help you through the course work, to make sure you have understood the study material and to check your progress. 10 Course outlines DEC 2 Principles & Elements of Design This course aims to form the backbone of your understanding of design. You will look at environment, space, house design, line and form, materials and textures, natural and artificial light, and indoor\outdoor flow. Within a given space you will look at function, form, focal points, rhythm, proportion, human scale, and variety in unity. Symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial features are also studied. There are five design activities for you to work through to extend your knowledge before commencing the assessment. Assessment: In this assessment you will be asked to show your understanding of all principles and elements learnt so far. DEC 3 Planning You will learn to consider the practical, aesthetic and budgetary requirements of a project and create a brief. You will look at mind mapping and how to recognise key concepts and find out how to work with architects and other professionals effectively. This course will show you how to interpret site and floor plans including elevations, zoning, traffic flow, furniture arrangement and detail views. You will be shown the step-by-step process of creating a rough sketch through to producing a scale drawing with elevations. Within this course there are six design activities to help you extend your knowledge and practise these skills. Assessment: For this assessment you will create a brief and mind map, interpret plans, draw a plan to scale and compare different furniture layouts within a space. 8

11 DEC 4 Colour What is colour? How is it created in nature? How is it affected by luminosity and texture? You will look at these questions and study the properties of colour which are defined by hue, value, intensity, tint, shade and tone. You will understand the personality of colour, the difference between cool and warm colours, how the colour wheel works, and factors to consider when selecting colours and planning a scheme. The nine design activities within this course provide an opportunity for you to play with colour and learn about its many facets. Assessment: In this assessment you will create an interior colour scheme, including a brief and plan. In addition you will identify the use of colour, texture and pattern; prepare an exterior colour scheme; show an understanding of the properties of colour through example; and describe and illustrate a room s scheme. DEC 1 Influences in design & decorating This course is an introduction to the historical influences of architecture and design in which you will study architects and their work. The course looks at recognising and understanding various styles and at how you can identify and co-ordinate your own style. There are 11 design activities throughout this module. Assessment: There are two assessments in which you will demonstrate. An understanding of historical periods and various design styles. You will analyse several architects and their buildings, and profile several interior designers and their work. 9

12 DEC 5 Lighting You will study natural light, artificial light and the history and psychology of lighting. You will look at colour value and distribution of light, types of lighting and the definitions of lighting terms. This course will show you how to create lighting plans for interior and exterior areas and look at different fittings and styles. The nine design activities in this course have been created to enhance your learning experience. Assessment: For this assessment you will be required to show your understanding of lighting, its history and future as well as prepare lighting plans and recommend appropriate fittings. Dec 6 Flooring In this course you will be introduced to a range of hard and soft flooring options and their contribution to the decorative scheme in terms of space manipulation, noise control, colour, texture, pattern and style. You will learn how to identify the most suitable flooring material for different areas in a home and gain further knowledge by completing the seven design activities. Assessment: For this assessment you will analyse several different flooring materials, outline the process of choosing suitable carpets and rugs and design a flooring plan for a home. DEC 7 Windows & Walls 10 You will study windows through history and how they have developed in style, materials and efficiency. You will learn about different types of window treatments and how they can manipulate a scheme through the use of style, proportion, balance and scale. You will look at the design elements and details that contribute to and interrupt walls and learn about the different ways to treat walls both in material and style. There are 10 design activities within this course. Assessment: In this assessment you will cover different types of window and wall designs and their treatments and work on a restoration project.

13 DEC 8 Fabric & Furnishings In this course you will look at the development of the fabric and furnishing industry and at influential fabric designers. You will learn about woven and printed fabrics, fabric finishes, and identify the properties of natural and synthetic fibres, soft furnishings, upholstery, leather, cushions, throws, bed coverings and window treatments are all covered in this course. There are 11 design activities within this course. Assessment: For this assessment you will look at different fibres, furnishing fabrics and leather. You will also research a fabric designer, and analyse and co-ordinate schemes. DEC 9 Furniture In this course you will take a look at the history of furniture through to current day developments worldwide. The role of furniture at home and the considerations required to select suitable pieces to work well in a given space are also discussed. You will work your way through 10 design activities to gain greater understanding. Assessment: In this assessment you will answer questions on various furniture styles, prepare furniture plans and select appropriate furniture for a brief. Dec10 Living Spaces In this course you will look at the role of living rooms, dining areas, conservatories and studies. Floors, ceilings, walls, windows, storage, furniture arrangement, colour, texture, pattern, lighting and indoor/outdoor living are all elements that influence the space and are discussed in this course. There are seven design activities within this course. Assessment: This assessment provides an opportunity to bring together all of the principles and elements of design you have learnt so far. 11

14 Dec11 Kitchens & Laundries This course looks at the many aspects of kitchen and laundry design for effeciency and it will show you how to plan without compromising on the character of the home. Once you have worked your way through the course and completed the 10 design activities, you can then complete the assessment. Assessment: You will be required to assess kitchen and laundry spaces and create successful schemes including the layout, appropriate material selection, lighting and colour. DEC12 Bedrooms & Bathrooms) You will look at the development of these two spaces through to present-day thinking. You will study beds, furniture and furnishing selections as well as bathroom materials and products. In this course are 14 design activities created to improve your knowledge of the many aspects that go into successfully designing these spaces. Assessment: This assessment brings together all of the knowledge that you have learnt throughout the course. You will be required to analyse, design and furnish bedrooms and bathrooms for this assessment. 12
