5 BACHELOR OF APPLIED MANAGEMENT Qualification code: OP7080 QUALIFICATION There is a growing need for managers who can define business objectives, allocate resources effectively, motivate employees and problem solve. The Bachelor of Applied Management will give you broad knowledge of management concepts and an adaptable approach to business management. You will be able to apply your leadership knowledge and skills to a variety of industries and professional settings and assist organisations to maximise their performance. When you achieve the qualification you will be able to: apply the basic contemporary theories of management to a wide range of organisations interpret and use accounting and other quantitative information for short and long term decision making carry out management practices in accordance with key cultural, economic, ethical and legal aspects relevant to New Zealand identify and analyse problems relevant to your field of work and propose or critique possible solutions design and carry out projects effectively and efficiently demonstrate qualities of leadership and innovative strategic thinking engage in strategic development and decision making utilising the concepts of systematic development, complexity and inter-dependence within the national and global business environments build and participate in effective teams and manage resources and facilities communicate effectively with team members and manage interaction with the public negotiate with colleagues and members of the public research and evaluate relevant information and engage in lifelong learning. EMPLOYMENT PATHWAY Upon successful completion of the degree you may find employment in a wide range of industries in middle or upper management in job areas like technology, hospitality, food management, health care, sports and event management, military and government work. ACADEMIC PATHWAY Once you have achieved the Bachelor of Applied Management you will be equipped to undertake Master of Business Administration (MBA) courses (not offered at Open Polytechnic) and progress to more specialist post graduate courses that align with your interests and/or employment. PATHWAYS PROGRAMME If you have achieved a National Diploma in a business or management related area, you may be eligible to cross-credit your study to the Bachelor of Applied Management. 6 BACHELOR OF APPLIED MANAGEMENT QUALIFICATION STRUCTURE You must gain 360 credits with a minimum of 80 credits at Level 7 and no more than 160 credits at Level 5. You need to complete all compulsory courses (140 credits) or have these credits awarded through a credit transfer arrangement. 7 STUDY PLAN It is a good idea to plan your study programme before you start. To work out what courses you need to complete for your degree, use the study plan below. We recommend that you complete Level 5 courses before moving on to Level 6 and that you complete Level 6 courses before moving on to Level 7. 8 DIPLOMA IN APPLIED MANAGEMENT DIPLOMA IN APPLIED MANAGEMENT Qualification code: OP5206 Level: 5 This diploma introduces aspiring managers and team leaders to a range of management techniques. If you are already working as a manager, the diploma provides a pathway to a qualification that will recognise your existing knowledge and skills. Once you ve completed the Diploma in Applied Management you can credit relevant courses to a Bachelor of Applied Management. The Diploma in Applied Management may also be studied under the Bachelor of Business using Bachelor of Business courses. 9 GENERAL INFORMATION Assessment We measure your progress and judge whether you have achieved the learning outcomes of your course through assessments such as essays, reports, tasks and projects. There are two types of assessment: Formative assessment: Involves activities and feedback designed to improve learning. This is not used to decide your final result. Summative assessment: Involves grading of in-course assessments which decide your final result. To achieve a satisfactory course completion, students must: Achieve a minimum of 50% of the available marks with at least 40% in the examination. Achieve 50% of the available marks overall if there is no examination. Assessment varies for each course. Full details are in the course information, which is sent to you when you enrol. GRADING SYSTEM The following grading system is used for Open Polytechnic degrees. EXAMINATIONS We have examination venues throughout New Zealand. You will be allocated a venue closest to your home address. Before you choose the courses that you want to enrol in, check that you can attend the examination, because examination times and dates cannot be changed. Examination dates and times are listed on our website. Sitting examinations outside New Zealand If you are, or will be, living overseas at the time of the examination, you will need to arrange a suitable examination venue and an appropriate supervisor. We will contact you eight weeks before the examination to help you make these arrangements. Any costs relating to the overseas venue and supervision will be your responsibility, including the costs associated with your supervisor returning your completed examination paper to us by courier. Note: A fee may apply if you need to sit your examination overseas and did not pay the international handling fee at the time of enrolment. Special assistance for examinations If you need special arrangements to enable you to sit an examination, we may be able to help. Download and return the Application for Special Assistance form, from openpolytechnic.ac.nz/specialassistance We will need your application form at least six weeks before your examination. The more notice we have, the more likely it is we will be able to help you. If you would like to discuss your needs, contact us by ing exams@openpolytechnic.ac.nz ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Applicants must satisfy the academic requirements for university entrance, comprising: NCEA Level 3 Three subjects at Level 3, made up of: 14 credits each, in three approved subjects* Literacy 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of: 5 credits in reading 5 credits in writing. Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of: achievement standards specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or unit standards package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, all three required). * Visit nzqa.govt.nz for a list of approved subjects for university entrance. 7
10 GENERAL INFORMATION Once you have met the requirements for University Entrance it will appear on your Record of Achievement. Applicants who do not meet these requirements may be considered for provisional admission. In such cases admission will be dependent on whether applicants can demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of success in the programme. English language English is the language of study at Open Polytechnic. You will need to be able to read and write well in English so that you can understand course materials and also submit written assessments. There are criteria that must be met if English is not your first language. For more information about English language requirements, please call freephone or visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz/englishlanguage NEW ZEALAND STUDENTS A New Zealand Student is any New Zealand citizen, including citizens or permanent residents of the Cook Islands, Tokelau or Niue studying there or in New Zealand; New Zealand residents or New Zealand permanent residents living in New Zealand; or Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents living in New Zealand. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS If you are an international student residing in New Zealand and studying part-time, you must have a verified work permit/visa which is valid until the end of your course. You also need to have one of the following: A Variation of Conditions allowing study at Open Polytechnic. OVERSEAS HANDLING FEE If you live overseas, you will need to pay an extra international handling charge. The amount of this fee will depend on where you live. The overseas handling fee will be added to your course fees when you enrol. LOCATION CHARGE PER TRIMESTER Australia $50 South Pacific region $70 East Asia and North America $95 Europe $105 Rest of the world $120 COMPUTER AND ONLINE ACCESS Given the significance of computer usage in modern business and organisational settings, it is important that you develop strong computer competencies. You will need access to a computer because: your in-course assessments need to be word processed and submitted online many courses require computer as an integral part of the course work some courses have accessable components that require participation in discussion forums on Online Campus important information such as newsletters and assessment feedback are sent electronically. See Appendix 1 for more information and the computer requirements. If you do not have access to a computer and the internet please contact us to discuss your study options. A letter of authorisation from your employer (on letterhead) confirming that you need to undertake this training as part of your job. International students must pay full fees at the time of enrolment. Student visas or permits cannot be issued for this programme. OFF-SHORE STUDENTS If you are a New Zealand citizen living overseas, you may be admitted to the programme subject to Open Polytechnic agreement about suitable arrangements for project work. Study time For all Diploma of Applied Management and Bachelor of Applied Management courses you will need to complete hours of study per week. 11 Loans, allowances and other funding Student loans and allowances are administered by StudyLink. We recommend that you apply for a student loan at least four weeks before the trimester starts. We cannot confirm your enrolment or send your course materials until your fees have been paid. For more information, or to find out if you re eligible for a student loan, visit studylink.govt.nz or give StudyLink a call on FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE We have a fund to help students who are in financial need and have no other option for financial support. RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) RPL is the process used to recognise your existing experience and skills in formal qualifications. RPL takes account of work and life experience, and previous education and training courses which may be relevant to your course. You may be able to use RPL to qualify for credits towards papers in a formal qualification with us. If your application is accepted you will need to provide verified evidence that you have met the learning outcomes of the course you are seeking credit for. For more information visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz/rpl CROSS-CREDITS AND CREDIT TRANSFER If you have already passed some courses (either through us or another tertiary provider) that you think will exempt you from having to do some parts of a qualification, you can apply for cross-credit or credit transfer. You will need to provide evidence that you have already met the learning outcomes of the course you want credit for. You can apply for cross-credit and credit transfer when your enrolment is accepted. closely matches one of our courses. We will decide how many credits will be awarded, and at what level. Unspecified credits may only be used to replace elective courses within a qualification. The most cross-credits allowed is up to two-thirds of a degree (12 x 20-credit courses), up to half of a diploma (3 x 20-credit courses), and one course per certificate. You cannot gain partial cross-credit for a course, and you cannot cross-credit to Level 7 courses. You may receive some informal advice about which courses might cross-credit. That advice is for guidance only and does not guarantee the award of cross-credits. Learning support YOUR LECTURER You will have a lecturer for each course that you study. Your lecturer is there to help you through the course work, provide study support, advice and feedback, and to mark your assessments. Open Polytechnic degree graduates can continue their education with postgraduate studies at another tertiary education institution. Normally graduates wishing to enrol in a graduate or postgraduate programme at a tertiary education institution other than the one from which they graduate must apply for and negotiate a place in that programme.
