1 Application Instructions Graduate Diploma in Project Management (Level 7) Welcome to SIT2LRN, Southern Institute of Technology s distance learning faculty. SIT2LRN offers you the opportunity to study wherever you have a computer with access to the Internet under our Zero Fees Scheme. APPLICATION CHECKLIST Please use the following checklist to ensure that all relevant information and documentation has been included, and RETURN WITH YOUR APPLICATION. Remember, your application will be assessed based on the information that you provide us with. Processing of your application will be interrupted if we need to come back to you for missing information. 2 WHAT IS THE ZERO FEES SCHEME? The Zero Fees Scheme means we do not charge tuition fees. However, there is a Student Direct Material Cost that you need to pay and an administration fee. The administration fee is for processing your application and the Student Direct Material Cost gives you secure access to Blackboard our online learning environment and to student support services throughout your study with us. WHO QUALIFIES FOR THE ZERO FEES SCHEME? A New Zealand citizen completing the full qualification or An Australian citizen/new Zealand Resident or Permanent Resident who is currently living in New Zealand and completing the full qualification. INSTRUCTIONS TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR APPLICATION: 1. Read the attached Programme Fact Sheet and the SIT2LRN FAQs on the SIT website and find out if you meet the application criteria for both the programme and the unit/s you wish to study. 2. Check your eligibility for Zero Fees. If you are not eligible to study under this scheme, please call for further options. 3. Fill in the attached Flexible Learning Application Form & Enrolment Contract checking that: a. If you are a returning student you: Fill in the blue dot sections of the application form only. Attach photo identification (this must be a copy of your driver s licence, passport or 18+ card). This does not need to be verified. Attach supporting documents, as outlined on the previous page, and the completed checklist. b. If you are a new student you: Fill in all sections of the application form. Attach a copy of your verified ID (a copy of either your birth certificate or passport which has been stamped and signed by any one of the following JP, Barrister, Court Deputy Registrar, Member of Parliament, Land Transport NZ, Public Trust, member of the New Zealand Police, School Principal, Minister of Religion or GP). Attach all academic documentation to support your application including copies of any certificates of courses you have undertaken / NZQA record of achievement / transcripts / CV. Attach supporting documents, as outlined on the previous page, including letter of intent, and the completed checklist. 4. Remember to sign and date the application form and check it one last time to confirm you have included all the required information and supporting documents. Your application will be assessed based on the information that you provide. Missing information will delay the processing of your application. 5. You will receive acknowledgement confirming that we have received your application. Processing may take up to three weeks, however we will get in touch with you sooner if we require further documentation. Once your application has been accepted you will be sent a conditional offer of acceptance with an invoice and instructions on how to make payment. Once we have received your payment (or if you have opted to pay by Student Loan or Purchase Order) you will be sent an Enrolment Confirmation Letter and Important Information Booklet. Closer to the start of the intake you will receive a Time To Get Started Letter which will give you all the necessary information, tools and guidance to start your study with us. Programme Completion: Timeframe for completion of this programme is 5 years Total credits: 120 PROGRAMME AIM The aim of the Graduate Diploma in Project Management is to provide students who already have a degree, or extensive applicable experience, with advanced theoretical and applied knowledge in a specialised field, which can be used in professional practice or further advanced study in this area. APPLICATION CRITERIA Applicants must have obtained at least an undergraduate degree in any discipline. OR Be a mature student aged at least 20 years and supply evidence of at least three (3) years relevant work experience. Each mature applicant must provide their curriculum vitae detailing any relevant work experience and academic achievements. The Programme Manager will use this information to assess whether the applicant is likely to successfully complete the Graduate Diploma. Meeting the application criteria does not guarantee acceptance into the programme. ASSESSMENT Assessments may include, but are not limited to: tests, assignments, case studies, presentations, reports and final examinations. Assessments for the Dissertation and Internship papers may also include a research proposal, literature review, research report and presentation. GRADUATE OUTCOME STATEMENT Students who have completed a Graduate Diploma in Project Management will critically analyse and evaluate strategic issues facing organisations and develop and implement appropriate polices, develop and implement procedures and processes to enable the successful implementation of specific projects which are outside the business as usual scope of operations. They will solve problems, both independently and as part of a team. 4 PROGRAMME FACT SHEET PROGRAMME CONTENT The programme is made up of the following papers: Level 6 papers (elective) - complete three of the following: MGT206 - Risk management and quality (level 6) 15 credits Students will be provided with a thorough understanding of issues of risk assessment, prevention and intervention in undertaking projects. The related topic of quality control and evaluation is also considered in detail. able to: analyse areas of risk in the project management lifecycle; undertake a risk analysis and justify conclusions; compare and contrast problem-solving methods for dealing with problems when they arise in projects and apply them to a specific scenario providing justification for the chosen approach; analyse the principles of quality control in projects; examine the common methods of evaluating quality in projects; develop a quality management plan and undertake with rationale, corrective action to address a quality management issue in a specific example. MGT210 - Organising and defining the project (level 6) 15 credits This paper presents project organisation as a dynamic process occurring throughout the project management lifecycle, consistent with a systems view. Learners will discuss issues of project selection, strategy, structure and the context within which projects occur. They will also explore the essential elements of defining a project as part of the planning process. MGT211 - The project plan and resources (level 6) 15 credits Learners will learn how to go about developing a project plan to industry standards. Learners will also develop an understanding of the planning process involving key stakeholders and the value of continuous evaluation and improvement. Learners will also consider the principles of resource management. able to: apply the principles of strategic planning processes; estimate project cost and time; evaluate the essential components of a project plan that would meet industry standards; critically evaluate project plans; prepare an outline of a project plan and examine the principles of resource identification, allocation and management. MGT212 - Measuring performance, evaluation and closure (level 6) 15 credits Learners will develop an understanding of measuring and monitoring progress and performance in all aspects of a project, including an overview of evaluation methodologies and the tasks involved in bringing a project to closure. able to: examine the principles underpinning methods of evaluation; evaluate common methods of measuring and documenting the progress of a project; analyse a project s progress; undertake corrective action if progress is inadequate and justify approach; design performance measurement criteria for a project and effectively execute the necessary steps to bring a project to closure. able to: analyse project organisation in the context of systems thinking and complexity theory; assess the elements of project organisation and how it is a dynamic process; examine how to select a project and determine project management strategy; apply the principles in defining a project and evaluate the uses of project management software. 5 PROGRAMME FACT SHEET MGT213 - The project lifecycle (level 6) 15 credits Students will be exposed to major extant models of project management and their application to the project management cycle. The paper also provides the learner with an overview of project management from the planning stage through to closing down a project on completion. able to: define the scope of project management; analyse the major models of project management; critically evaluate these models in relation to their applicability to practice; examine the relevance of systems thinking to project management; assess the steps of the project management life cycle; apply these steps to a project management case study and examine the use of project management software in practice. MGT214 - Project management project (level 6) 15 credits This is a capstone paper which integrates the knowledge and skills students have gained with regards to project management. As part of this paper, students will undertake and report on a small project. able to: design a project proposal; successfully negotiate the proposed project; develop a detailed plan of a project; implement a project to completion; communicate with colleagues regarding the conduct of all aspects of the project and adjust the project accordingly and document all aspects of the project to industry standards. Level 7 papers (compulsory) complete all of the following: MGT302 - Contemporary issues (level 7) 15 credits This paper provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate an advanced knowledge and understanding of various marketing / management / accounting theories and practices applicable to profit and/or non-profit organisations, which reflect the key contemporary issues faced by organisations. Students will be able to identify, consolidate and evaluate strategic issues studied in earlier parts of the degree and within the current business environment. able to: examine and critique contemporary issues relating to organisations and demonstrate familiarity with relevant published works; critically reflect on identified contemporary issues facing a specific organisation, including assessing the relevance and potential impacts; analyse information needs and recommend appropriate data gathering processes to aid organisational decision-making and planning, for an identified contemporary issue facing a chosen organisation and determine the research area for either their dissertation or advanced research project. MGT303 - Strategic management (level 7) 15 credits This paper provides students with an insight into how to think strategically in order to gain strategic advantage and to add value to an organisation. Students apply strategic management principles to simulated and actual business situations to develop their critical thinking skills. able to: critically evaluate theories that have influenced approaches to strategic management; analyse an organisation s internal and external environment; critically evaluate strategic options for specific organisations; assess factors that influence the effectiveness of strategy implementation and evaluate strategic performance. 6 PROGRAMME FACT SHEET MGT309 - Relationships, influence and leadership (level 7) 15 credits Students will be able to recognise and maximise their role in influencing decision makers and understand how to use influential tactics. Students will understand some of the theories attached to influencing decision-making and know when to apply these to situations. Leadership and its qualities as opposed to management, will be examined as will the relationship between leaders and those who seek to influence them. able to: analyse the theory/ies behind influence in the corporate and governmental sense; examine their role in a sphere of influence; critique tactics for effective influence; critically analyse and justify own leadership style for further development; critically evaluate interactions between different agencies and sectors and research and apply appropriate influential arguments in a given situation. Level 7 papers (elective) complete one of the following: MGT310 - Management dissertation (level 7) 15 credits This paper provides students with an opportunity to conduct advanced research into an aspect of management theory or practice by integrating the body of knowledge learnt in management papers. able to: select a current management issue or applied management problem and formulate an appropriate research objective and research question; plan, organise and implement a research project; select and apply appropriate research methodologies; collect, analyse and interpret research data; write a research report to a professional standard and make an oral presentation of the management-related research project and answer relevant questions raised. MGT320 - Internship (level 7) 15 credits This paper provides students with an opportunity to become familiar with the micro and macro operating environments of an organisation and to apply the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course of their degree study. Using knowledge and skills gained in the first two years of the degree, students will be enabled to present a development/problem-solving proposal in an area relevant to the internship organisation. Students will also gain reflective skills through the reflection on the internship and how their personal and professional managerial skills have developed and broadened. able to: critically evaluate an organisation s corporate direction, main activities and identify and evaluate the internal environment of the internship organisation; evaluate the organisation s operating environment and the role of the internship organisation within the industry; assess and rationalise to all stakeholders significant issues confronting the internship organisation, specifically an aspect of concern or interest to the organisation s operation or management; conduct and critically evaluate primary research regarding the specific aspect to be stated; distinguish between critical and non-critical factors impacting on the problem/development; evaluate information and make recommendations for specific development/problems; consider and assess issues for implementing recommendations; critically assess the dilemmas, challenges and problems faced, and how these issues were resolved during the internship; critically evaluate how the knowledge and skills acquired during the degree programme were adapted into practical situations; critically evaluate the effectiveness of the internship on professional growth and professional development; define the range of duties completed while undertaking the internship; assess opportunities for continuing further development; critically evaluate their own organisational and communication skills during their internship. 7 PROGRAMME FACT SHEET CROSS CREDITS If you have completed and passed the Diploma in Project Management (Level 6) through SIT2LRN within the last 5 years, you may be able to have some of your study credited towards this programme. The list is available here: book_list.pdf SUGGESTED STUDY PATH Level 6 papers must be completed before, or at the same time as, Level 7 papers. Papers at the same level may be studied in any order. Full time study Full time study is completing 60 credits per intake. Students studying full time will complete the Graduate Diploma within two intakes (one year) Full time acceptance into the programme is at the Programme Manager s discretion. Part time study The number of credits selected per intake will depend on work, family, and other commitments. The recommended maximum number of credits per intake, compared to working hours, are: Working 37+ hours per week = enrol in a maximum of 30 credits per intake Working hours per week = enrol in a maximum of 45 credits per intake Working fewer than 20 hours per week = enrol in a maximum of 60 credits per intake (full time study). This is a guide only and will differ depending on individual circumstances. Students studying part time have a maximum of three years to complete the qualification. 11 Documentation To qualify as a domestic student, and so to be entitled to the Government tuition subsidy, you must be a citizen of New Zealand (including students from the Cook Islands, Tokelau, or Niue who have New Zealand citizenship), resident or permanent resident of New Zealand or a citizen or permanent resident of Australia residing in New Zealand. The provision of Zero Fees tertiary programmes has enhanced educational opportunities for all students including non-traditional users of tertiary education. Zero Fees allows New Zealand or Australian citizens or permanent residents the opportunity to study approved programmes without paying the tuition fees. Zero Fees, where available, applies only to the base tuition fee attached to each programme of study. Particular programmes may incur additional costs to the students, for example: uniform, texts, tools, activities, NZQA charges. Programmes that are o ered under Zero Fees are: Tertiary Education Commission funded (you must be a New Zealand or Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident to receive Tertiary Education Commission funding). Christchurch campus - Zero Fees applies to most programmes. SIT2LRN distance programmes - Zero Fees applies to all programmes. (Zero Fees is available) as a result of present Government policies. Although not foreseen, SIT is unable to guarantee ongoing Zero Fees provision should for any reason present funding arrangements and/or Government policies be reviewed. In Order to retain the Zero Fees, students undertaking a programme of study at Southern Institute of Technology must meet the following criteria: course or programme of study. attendance. (Not applicable for SIT2LRN programmes). Adherence to the provisions of Southern Institute of Technology Student Code of Conduct. Withdrawal from programmes may a ect students future entitlement to the Zero Fees. If any of the requirements detailed above are not met,the following will apply: In any case of a breach of the terms and conditions, and after due notice. the Zero Fees status may be withdrawn. In this situation, if a student wishes and is eligible to continue in an enrolled programme of study after this has been withdrawn, he/she will than be liable for the pro gramme fees required for the remainder of the academic year.
