1 (Level 4) Application Instructions (Level 4) Welcome to SIT2LRN, Southern Institute of Technology s distance learning faculty. SIT2LRN offers you the opportunity to study wherever you have a computer with access to the Internet under our Zero Fees Scheme. APPLICATION CHECKLIST Please use the following checklist to ensure that all relevant information and documentation has been included, and RETURN TO US WITH YOUR APPLICATION. Remember, your application will be assessed based on the information that you provide us with. Processing of your application will be interrupted if we need to come back to you for missing information. 2 WHAT IS THE ZERO FEES SCHEME? The Zero Fees Scheme means we do not charge tuition fees. However, there is a Student Direct Material Cost that you need to pay and an administration fee. The administration fee is for processing your application and the Student Direct Material Cost gives you secure access to Blackboard our online learning environment and to student support services throughout your study with us. WHO QUALIFIES FOR THE ZERO FEES SCHEME? A New Zealand citizen completing the full qualification or An Australian citizen/new Zealand Resident or Permanent Resident who is currently living in New Zealand and completing the full qualification. INSTRUCTIONS TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR APPLICATION: 1. Read the attached Programme Fact Sheet and the SIT2LRN FAQs on the SIT website and find out if you meet the application criteria for both the programme and the unit/s you wish to study. 2. Check your eligibility for Zero Fees. If you are not eligible to study under this scheme, please call for further options. 3. Fill in the attached Flexible Learning Application Form & Enrolment Contract checking that: a. If you are a returning student you: Fill in the blue dot sections of the application form only. Attach photo identification (this must be a copy of your driver s licence, passport or 18+ card). This does not need to be verified. Attach supporting documents, as outlined on the previous page, and the completed checklist. b. If you are a new student you: Fill in all sections of the application form. Attach a copy of your verified ID (a copy of either your birth certificate or passport which has been stamped and signed by any one of the following JP, Barrister, Court Deputy Registrar, Member of Parliament, Land Transport NZ, Public Trust, member of the New Zealand Police, School Principal, Minister of Religion or GP). Attach all academic documentation to support your application including copies of any certificates of courses you have undertaken / NZQA record of achievement / transcripts / CV. Attach supporting documents, as outlined on the previous page including letter of intent, and the completed checklist. 4. Remember to sign and date the application form and check it one last time to confirm you have included all the required information and supporting documents. Your application will be assessed based on the information that you provide. Missing information will delay the processing of your application. 5. You will receive acknowledgement confirming that we have received your application. Processing may take up to three weeks, however we will get in touch with you sooner if we require further documentation. Once your application has been accepted you will be sent a conditional offer of acceptance with an invoice and instructions on how to make payment. Once we have received your payment (or if you have opted to pay by Student Loan or Purchase Order) you will be sent an Enrolment Confirmation Letter and Important Information Booklet. Closer to the start of the intake you will receive a Time To Get Started Letter which will give you all the necessary information, tools and guidance to start your study with us. Demonstrate knowledge and skills to standards recognised by the industry sector as appropriate. Develop work habits and practice appropriate for further training and employment in the small business management sector question and answer assessments and practical assessments. There are no exams for this programme. APPLICATION CRITERIA All applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in small business management, and have academic attributes which demonstrate that applicants have a reasonable likelihood of successful completion of the programme. Mature students should meet the criteria above, and be over 20 years of age at the commencement of the programme. GRADUATE OUTCOME STATEMENT Graduates will have acquired a core of small business competence and be able to recognise personal skills, and apply business skills, in areas relevant to the development of their own small business, or within small businesses with which they are associated. ASSESSMENT Assessments for this programme typically include essays, analytical business reports, School leavers should be a minimum of 18 years of age, with a minimum of 4 years secondary education. A minimum of 12 credits in each of four subjects at NCEA Level 2 is required. Students are required to have a small business idea on which to base their study and to provide details of the business idea they wish to pursue. 4 PROGRAMME FACT SHEET (Level 4) PROGRAMME CONTENT The programme is made up of the following unit standards: US Research small business operations (Level 4) 5 credits This unit standard is for people who wish to investigate and assess small business opportunities and operations for establishing or participating in small business ventures. analyse options for self-employment; identify characteristics of small business enterprises; identify and assess new business opportunities; and evaluate assistance programmes and identify specialist services available for small business development. US Assess small business ownership options and business structures (Level 4) 5 credits This unit standard is for people who wish to assess ownership options and business structures for owning or participating in small business ventures. People who complete this unit standard are able to: analyse ownership options and business structures; assess options for acquiring a small business; evaluate small business financing options; and interpret legal requirements for small business operations. US Develop marketing options for small business operations (Level 4) 5 credits This unit standard is relevant for assessing and recommending options for the marketing and promotion of small business products and/or services. analyse the potential market for products and/or services and confirm market demand; determine the mix of products and/or services to be provided; and develop options for effective marketing of business products and/or services. US Produce establishment plans for small business ventures (Level 5) 5 credits This unit standard is for people who need to produce establishment plans for small business ventures. explore and articulate business vision concepts; formulate and communicate an ethical framework for business operations; identify means of fostering entrepreneurship and innovation; and establish business goals and objectives and formulate strategic plans for specific small business ventures. US Control and evaluate small business operations (Level 4) 5 credits This unit standard is for people who own, seek to own, or participate in small business ventures and need to select and implement control techniques and evaluate business performance against business goals. select and implement control techniques; interpret financial and accounting information; evaluate operating results against business plans and objectives; and manage business risks. US 6408 Determine profit projections for an entity (Level 4) 5 credits This unit standard is relevant for determining product and/or service costs, and assessing the profit potential of an entity. People credited with this unit standard are able to, for an entity: identify costs; use calculations to determine profit projections; and explain assumptions and limitations in calculating profit projections. 5 PROGRAMME FACT SHEET (Level 4) US Establish and maintain quality customer relations for a small business enterprise (Level 4) 5 credits This unit standard is relevant for assessing customer needs and preferences, and fostering quality customer relations with the small business enterprise. research customer needs and preferences; customise products and/or services to meet requirements; monitor customer satisfaction with products and services provided; and develop customer service strategies for maintaining quality customer relations. US Establish human resource needs of the small business operation (Level 5) 5 credits assess human resource requirements to establish the business operation; identify potential sources of personnel; evaluate human resource management options; identify employment obligations and responsibilities; plan how work will be allocated and evaluated; and identify staff development needs and establish staff development policies. US Demonstrate and apply knowledge of costing for an activity within an entity (Level 5) 6 credits People credited with this unit standard are able to, for an activity within an entity: explain and classify costs; determine and allocate costs; and make recommendations based on cost information. US 2926 Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of marketing (Level 4) 10 credits This unit standard is for people who seek a broad understanding of marketing principles for application to enterprise activities. People credited with this unit standard are able to describe: the marketing environment and determine variables for marketing activities; the role of marketing research and marketing information systems in the marketplace; the different characteristics of major markets; the concepts of segmentation and targeting; influences on consumer behaviour in relation to marketing activities; and the relationship between marketing mix development and the achievement of marketing objectives. US Demonstrate knowledge of quality assurance in a business operation (Level 4) 7 credits explain concepts, systems, and principles of quality and quality assurance; identify the quality assurance requirements for a business operation; and assess the quality assurance system of a business operation. CROSS CREDITS Students who have previously completed any of the above units at SIT or another learning institution can apply to have the unit(s) cross credited to their record of learning at SIT. This is done by filling in a cross credit application form and attaching proof of achievement. The cross credit application form is available on MySIT or from the Programme Administrator. If you wish to apply for a cross credit, please attach the completed form to your application. Forms can be found at: UNSPECIFIED CROSS CREDITS If you have completed unit standards in any of the Business domains, which are not listed on the application form, you may be eligible for an unspecified cross credit. Ten credits from anywhere on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) can also count towards this qualification. Please refer to the National Programme Document ( or contact your administrator for more details. Granting of unspecified cross credits is at the discretion of the Programme Manager. 9 Documentation To qualify as a domestic student, and so to be entitled to the Government tuition subsidy, you must be a citizen of New Zealand (including students from the Cook Islands, Tokelau, or Niue who have New Zealand citizenship), resident or permanent resident of New Zealand or a citizen or permanent resident of Australia residing in New Zealand. You must provide evidence of citizenship, residency or permanent residency and to do so you must produce one of the following: countersigned by a Kaumatua. Zealand, Cook Islands, Tokelau, or Niue. Drivers Licences do not constitute a valid form of identification In order to be eligible for Student Component Funding from the NZ Government, SIT is required to validate an applicant s full legal name, date of birth, gender and citizenship. The provision of Zero Fees tertiary programmes has enhanced educational opportunities for all students including non-traditional users of tertiary education. Zero Fees allows New Zealand or Australian citizens or permanent residents the opportunity to study approved programmes without paying the tuition fees. Zero Fees, where available, applies only to the base tuition fee attached to each programme of study. Particular programmes may incur additional costs to the students, for example: uniform, texts, tools, activities, NZQA charges. Programmes that are o ered under Zero Fees are: Tertiary Education Commission funded (you must be a New Zealand or Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident to receive Tertiary Education Commission funding). Christchurch campus - Zero Fees applies to most programmes. SIT2LRN distance programmes - Zero Fees applies to all programmes. (Zero Fees is available) as a result of present Government policies. Although not foreseen, SIT is unable to guarantee ongoing Zero Fees provision should for any reason present funding arrangements and/or Government policies be reviewed. In Order to retain the Zero Fees, students undertaking a programme of study at Southern Institute of Technology must meet the following criteria: course or programme of study. attendance. (Not applicable for SIT2LRN programmes). Adherence to the provisions of Southern Institute of Technology Student Code of Conduct. Withdrawal from programmes may a ect students future entitlement to the Zero Fees. If any of the requirements detailed above are not met,the following will apply: In any case of a breach of the terms and conditions, and after due notice. the Zero Fees status may be withdrawn. In this situation, if a student wishes and is eligible to continue in an enrolled programme of study after this has been withdrawn, he/she will than be liable for the pro gramme fees required for the remainder of the academic year. All matters relating to student rights and responsibilities will be handled in accordance with Southern Institute of Technology s Policies and Procedures, as outlined in student handbooks.
