1 Master of Information Technology 2016 For New Zealand Citizens & Permanent Residents The Master of Information Technology (MIT) is a Level 9 one and a half year full-time programme with a minimum of 180 credits. It enables students who have completed a bachelors degree in information technology/ computing to achieve a post graduate level qualification in information technology. The MIT programme has been designed to produce IT graduates who are able to think critically and have a number of high level skills in IT field that can be applied in a wide range of situations. The principles underlying the design of the Master of Information Technology are similar to those of the Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology, the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology and the Bachelor of Computing Systems, with the understanding that students entering the Master of Information Technology will have completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology or have already completed an IT degree with a grade point average of at least a B. It is focused on both in-depth theoretical knowledge and understanding of the information technology environment and professional practice in which the knowledge and understanding are applied. EIT Hawke s Bay It is designed to extend and deepen an individual s knowledge and skills by building on attainment gained from undergraduate study in the computing field and to extend current IT professionals in their career progression. The programme builds on the student s existing knowledge and skills through courses that research and apply information technology knowledge and skills in an environment that combines project work, case studies, real-life simulations, and practical work experience. It encourages flexibility that acknowledges the diversity of IT environment and the diversity in learner interest and needs. It encourages participants to apply research skills to identify solutions to Information Technology problems or issues. Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: Standard Entry Successful completion of a 3-year IT degree or equivalent qualification with an average of B or better across all courses; OR Successful completion of a Graduate Diploma in Information Technology with an average of B or better across all courses; OR Successful completion of a Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology with an average of B or better across all courses; OR IT Degree or IT post graduate qualification graduates may not have achieved an average of B pass or better who can demonstrate evidence of significant IT work and professional experience at degree level or above. These applicants will be required to participate in an interview. Provisional Entry Applicants who do not meet the criteria above, but present evidence of ability to succeed (eg. maturity, life experience, work experience, other study) or Entry to subsequent study is conditional on success at the entry level.
3 English language entry requirement If English is not your first language you are required to have attained an acceptable level of English language fluency. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful study in English, approved scores on TOEFL (between 79 and 93) or IELTS (6.5 Academic) tests, completion of accepted international equivalents, or completion of an EIT Hawke s Bay assessment. Entry with credit You may already have some knowledge or skills that can be recognised as part of your intended study. This may take a number of different forms including study at a private training establishment, workplace training, other tertiary study, or life experiences. If you think you may qualify, you may want to apply for Cross Credit or Recognition of Prior Learning. Cross Credit is based on the equivalency of courses or qualifications. You would apply for Cross Credit if you have passed a very similar course at the same level. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is based on the assessment of your current knowledge and skills. You would apply for RPL if you had gained the relevant knowledge and skills through life experiences and informal learning situations. You will be asked to provide details of anything that you would like considered as credit toward your intended programme of study, as part of your application. RPL and Cross Credit cannot be awarded for a course if you are enrolled in that course. You must apply prior to enrolment. Cross Credits may be granted from other degree programmes, providing they are not part of the entry qualification). For further information and enquiries about RPL and Cross Credit please contact the School of Computing Secretary, on (06) ext Class times Classes are scheduled between 8.00am and 5.00pm, Monday through to Friday. Individual Study Hours Approximately four hours for each classroom hour. Facilities In the state-of-the-art Information Technology Complex, there are nine networked computer laboratories with between 24 and 30 student stations in each. The rooms are environmentally controlled, with data show equipment in each room. There are specific labs for software development, hardware, multimedia and a room for computer study. The facility also has a 50-seat tiered lecture theatre. Assessments With exception of MIT9.100 Applied Research Project, all assessments for the MIT are marked internally. Assessments consist of assignments, tests, practical demonstrations, projects and case studies. MIT9.100 Applied Research Project is a supervised applied research project where students work with a supervisor to produce a research report. The report is marked by the supervisor and an external examiner. Assessment is continuous throughout the semester. Programme Information To qualify for the MIT, students must have passed the courses (or their equivalent) listed below. The structure of the MIT is summarised in the following table. The courses and their co-requisites and prerequisites are listed below. All programmes of study must be approved by the Programme Co-ordinator. Level 8 9 Total Credits The three level 8 compulsory courses are: Semester One and Semester Two Code ITPG8.100 ITPG8.200 ITPG8.300 Course Advanced IT Project Management, The level 9 compulsory course is: Level 9 Code MIT9.100 Strategic IT Management (offered in semester 1) and Research in Information Technology (offered in semester 2). Course Applied Research Topic (offered in both semesters). In addition there are a number of level 8 elective courses that will be offered in either semester providing there is sufficient demand. The course investigates the concepts behind virtualisation technology, the different categories of virtualisation, and how they are used within a medium to large business organization. Enterprise Resource Planning Systems issues concerning the adoption of a cross-functional integrated computer-based information systems approach to the provision of IT applications within a medium to large business organisation. P: Relevant Systems Analysis & Design degree level courses and/or appropriate work experience. Cloud Based IT Solutions To enable students to understand the management issues surrounding the adoption of cloud based computing solutions and be able to assess the merits of a cloud based IT solution for a given IT environment. P: Relevant IT Management degree level courses and/or appropriate work experience Advanced Mobile and Wireless Technologies issues concerning the adoption of mobile and wireless technologies and the skills necessary to be able to make informed decisions when identifying the mobile or wireless technology best suited to a given purpose. P: Relevant IT Architecture degree level courses and/or appropriate work experience. Mobile Software Architectures key principles associated with mobile application development and software engineering and be able to apply these principles when designing and deploying an application to meet a specific business need. P: Relevant Software Development degree level courses and/or appropriate work experience. Enterprise Content Management concepts and technologies involved in enterprise content management and provide them with the skills that will allow them to evaluate enterprise content management strategies for specific business cases As required As required
7 ITPG8.900 Level 9 MIT9.100 Advanced Digital Learning Technologies To provide students with an understanding of the issues surrounding the adoption of emerging digital technologies in the educational and training environment and be able to apply these principles when using the technologies to meet a specific training need. P: Relevant Internet and Multimedia degree level courses and/or appropriate work experience Applied Research Project To provide students with an opportunity to develop and apply new skills and techniques to existing or emerging problems in the applied IT area. Participants will be required to demonstrate independent application of highly specialised knowledge and skills within the IT field. Students will be expected to o demonstrate ability to research a specific IT issue or problem, incorporating advanced levels of analysis, evaluation, discussion and theoretical development. P: ITPG8.300 Research in IT & 2 Practicum, work experience The MIT aims to produce graduates who have industry relevant practical and theoretical skills in this area. The majority of courses include some industry based project or case study based work.
