5 NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND CARE Qualification code: NC5573 version 4 Level: 3 Credits: 63 The National Certificate in Early Childhood Education & Care provides a basic introduction to the skills and knowledge required for the education and care of infants, toddlers and young children. This qualification is an ideal place to start if you have not studied for some time or left school with minimal qualifications. QUALIFICATION There are three courses in our programme of learning for this qualification. To be awarded the National Certificate in Early Childhood Education & Care you need to successfully complete all three courses: EAC01 Young children s wellbeing EAC02 Early childhood education theory and practice EAC03 Enabling learning: whänau, family, community. There is a practical workplace component for each course requiring you to attend an early childhood setting for a minimum of four hours each week. You will receive printed course materials for each course and they can be accessed online. FUTURE SKILLS Once you have completed the National Certificate in Early Childhood Education & Care you will be able to: work ethically with young children meet children's wellbeing and safety needs understand the diversity of early childhood education in Aotearoa New Zealand work with the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whäriki, and understand children's development communicate with parents and whänau by involving them in children s learning. 3
6 QUALIFICATION STRUCTURE This qualification has three courses which include 18 unit standards. You can only enrol in one course at a time starting with EAC01, and then EAC02 and EAC03. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Admission to this certificate requires NCEA Level 1. You also need to have a satisfactory police check or if you are still at school you will need to provide a character reference from your principal. If you are not already employed in early childhood education you will need to get work or offer to volunteer in an appropriate early childhood environment. 4
7 English language English is the language of study at Open Polytechnic. You will need to be able to read and write well in English so that you can understand course materials and also submit written assessments. There are criteria that must be met if English is not your first language. For more information about English language requirements, please call freephone or visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz/englishlanguage LITERACY EXERCISE The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) has created a literacy assessment tool to measure and improve the literacy and numeracy skills of adult learners in New Zealand. If you're studying a Level 1 3 course with Open Polytechnic for the first time, you must complete this assessment at the start and end of your course. You will receive an from TEC with more information when your enrolment is confirmed. Please contact us before you enrol if you do not wish to complete the literacy assessment. For more information visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz/literacytool STUDY TIME All courses have a credit value. This helps you work out how much study time you will need. Allow about 10 hours of study per credit. SET TEXTS There is one set text for this qualification Te Whäriki Early Childhood Curriculum. Any required readings are included in the course materials. Recommended readings may be available from the Open Polytechnic library and are available on the course page on Online Campus. ENROLMENT Your enrolment will officially begin on the first Monday of the month you choose for enrolment. When your enrolment is confirmed, we will send you a letter with your course start and end dates and where you can find assessment submission deadlines. You can apply to enrol online from the qualification page on our website by selecting the course(s) you wish to study within the qualification structure table. During the online application process you will be asked to provide the following information. You can save and exit at any time if you do not have all of the information with you. We will ask you to: 1. Confirm that you can meet the volunteer or work requirements of the qualification. 2. Provide the name of the ECE service where you are volunteering/working. 3. Download a Verification of Police Vetting form and give it to the person who is responsible for approving police clearances in your early childhood service OR download and complete an Authorisation to Disclose Information form if your workplace does not have your police clearance on file. Either form may be uploaded back into the online application form once completed. If you upload your Authorisation to Disclose Information form, you will also need to upload one form of ID (either a New Zealand drivers licence, passport or 18+ card). Your ID will need to be photocopied and attached to your Authorisation to Disclose Information form if you re returning it by post. 4. Disclose if you have ever been convicted of an offence, including traffic infringements, in any country. Your enrolment application cannot be processed until all required documentation has been received. NEW ZEALAND QUALIFICATIONS AUTHORITY (NZQA) RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENT The National Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care is made up of unit standards which will be recorded on your NZQA Record of Achievement. If you are already registered on the NZQA database, please provide us with your Record of Achievement number or your National Student Number when you apply to enrol online. If you are not registered, we will arrange this when you have finished course EAC01. Any unit standards you gain through the year will be added to your Record of Achievement by March of the following year. 8 OPEN POLYTECHNIC CERTIFICATE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD PRACTICE Qualification code: OP4310 Level : 4 Credits: 40 This qualification is designed for people who are involved in the care and education of children in a range of early childhood education settings including: home-based, education and care centres and play groups. The certificate has been endorsed by the NZ Home-based Childcare Association (NZHBCA) and Barnardo's to ensure it meets the needs and requirements of the home-based early childhood sector. This certificate is a foundation for higher level study in teaching and early childhood education, such as the Open Polytechnic Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education). QUALIFICATION Once you have successfully completed the two 20 credit courses you can apply to receive the Open Polytechnic Certificate in Early Childhood Practice. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN On completion of the Open Polytechnic Certificate in Early Childhood Practice you will have the skills and knowledge to: understand the history, goals, structure and philosophy of Te Whäriki: He whäriki mätauranga mo ngämokopuna o Aotearoa: early childhood curriculum, early childhood services and licensing criteria understand environments (interpersonal, temporal and physical) which support and nurture children s learning and development facilitate positive, reciprocal relationships with children, parents and whänau understand the principles underpinning effective partnership, the importance of Mäori as tangata whenua and inclusive practice understand children s learning and development and implement a curriculum that is consistent with Te Whäriki demonstrate the professional and ethical behaviours expected of an early childhood professional. ASSESSMENT For each course there are two assessments which cover four modules of learning. 6
9 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS You must be 17 years or older to enrol in this qualification. In addition, you must volunteer or work for a minimum of six hours a week in ONE of the following types of early childhood settings. Licensed early childhood centre. Licensed home-based setting affiliated to a home-based service or nanny provider. Certificated playgroup. Setting recognised for funding purposes by the Ministry of Education or Ministry of Health. These will be programmes with a focus on supporting families/whänau and young children. Another setting or service approved by the Head of School, School of Education Studies, Open Polytechnic. In addition you must have both of these documents. A satisfactory police check or signed verification from a home-based service provider of having a clear police vet within the last 12 months. See the enrolment section overleaf for more information. A satisfactory referee report from a person (not a family member or friend) who has observed you interacting with children and adults and is able to attest to your suitability to work with children and families. See the enrolment section below for more information. ENGLISH LANGUAGE English is the language of study at Open Polytechnic. How to enrol if you re a Barnardos educator If you are a Barnardos educator, your enrolment will need to be coordinated through a central Barnardos administrator and not online. 11 BACHELOR OF TEACHING (EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION) Qualification code: OP7030 Level: 7 Credits: 360 INTRODUCTION The Open Polytechnic Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) is a professional research-based teaching degree which builds on learning covered in our certificate qualifications. If you meet the admission requirements you can apply for admission into the degree qualification without completing a certificate first. See page 11 for more details. If you already hold a Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) you can upgrade to the degree qualification. Contact us or see page 13 for more information. The degree runs on a trimester basis with annual intakes in February and July. 12 QUALIFICATION STRUCTURE The degree qualification consists of 18 courses of 20 credits each. All courses are compulsory and there are six courses (120 credits) at each level. To enrol for Level 6 courses you must have successfully completed at least four courses (80 credits) at Level 5. To enrol for Level 7 courses you must have at least four courses (80 credits) at Level 6 and have completed all the Level 5 courses. ASSESSMENT The Open Polytechnic Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) is internally assessed by assignments and practical work experience in early childhood settings. There are no examinations. 10
13 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Under 20 years To apply for admission to the degree you must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident and be at least 17 years of age at the time of admission. You must also meet the following university entrance requirements: NCEA Level 3 14 credits in each of three approved subjects* at Level 3 or above. Literacy 10 credits in English or te reo Mäori at Level 2 or above, made up of: 5 credits in reading 5 credits in writing. Numeracy 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of: specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or three unit standards, 26623, and * For a list of approved subjects go to nzqa.govt.nz and search for 'university entrance'. Over 20 years If you are over 20 years of age and don t meet the above criteria you can still apply for admission into the degree. ENGLISH LANGUAGE If English is not your first language, you must supply proof that you have passed the IELTS academic English language proficiency test with a minimum score of 7 in each category as per the New Zealand Teachers Council guidelines. You need to be able to read and write well in English so you can write your assessments and understand written English course materials. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS This qualification is not available for international students. WORK EXPERIENCE Although not a requirement of this qualification, we strongly recommend that you work or volunteer in a licensed early childhood setting during your studies. STUDY TIME All courses have a credit value that helps you work out how much study time you will need. Allow about 10 hours of study per credit. To determine how many hours of study this means per week, divide the total study hours by the enrolment period. For example, if you enrol in a 20-credit course over a trimester (17 weeks), you will need to complete about (200 17) hours of study per week. Whether you work or volunteer in a licensed early childhood setting (it is strongly recommended that you do during your studies). 2. If you intend to study part-time or full-time. 3. If you have applied for a TeachNZ scholarship (see page 14 for more information). 4. If you will apply for cross-credits (see page 14 for more information). 5. Which qualifications you have completed (other than at secondary school). 6. To upload or post us evidence of study which may include academic transcripts, certificates, diplomas and/or degrees. 7. To provide details of your current and previous employers over the last five years (minimum) paid and/or voluntary. 8. To disclose if you have ever been convicted of an offence, including traffic infringements, in any country. 9. To describe to us in words about why you want to be an early childhood teacher and why you think you will be successful in the role. 10. To provide your interests, hobbies, iwi and community responsibilities or involvement. 11. To give us the name, occupation, address and phone number of two people who know you in a professional capacity (your referees must not be close friends or relatives) and who have agreed to provide confidential reports in support of your application. If you do not have the address of your referees, you will be asked to download two Referee Report forms and give them to your referees to complete and return to us by post. 12. To download and complete an Authorisation to Disclose Information form. The completed form can be uploaded back into the online application form once completed. If you upload the form, you will also need to upload one form of ID (either a New Zealand driver licence, passport or 18+ card). Once we have received your application and all required documentation, we will get in touch to acknowledge receipt of your application. Group A applicants who are completing the Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) and applying for an upgrade in the following trimester will need to complete an Authorisation to Disclose Information form, if you have not gained teacher registration with the New Zealand Teachers Council. Visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz and browse our subjects and courses to find the fee information you need. Loans, allowances and other funding Student loans and allowances are administered by StudyLink. We recommend that you apply for a student loan at least four weeks before the commencement of your study. We cannot confirm your enrolment or send your course materials until your fees have been paid. EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION TEACHER EDUCATION INCENTIVES BACHELOR OF TEACHING (EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION) There are a number of other grants and sources of financial help available for people wanting to become registered teachers in ECE. These include: TEACHNZ EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS For people with, or eligible for a Community Services Card and people intending to enrol in an identified kaupapa Mäori or Pasifika focused qualification. The Ministry of Education approve this grant. STUDY GRANTS These are available for qualified primary teachers. Information and application forms are available on the Ministry of Education website: minedu.govt.nz or teachnz.govt.nz FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE We have a fund to help students who are in financial need and have no other option for financial support. This fund is available for course fees and/or set text books. Conditions apply. Contact us for more information. See the last page of this brochure for contact details. Recognition of prior learning CROSS-CREDITS OR CREDIT TRANSFER Note: International qualifications are not recognised for cross-credit purposes. If you have already passed relevant early childhood courses within the last six years (through either us or another tertiary provider), which you think should be acknowledged, you may be eligible for cross-credit. You will need to provide evidence, including a copy of the learning outcomes of each course for which you are seeking credit for. Note: Cross-credits are generally considered for Level 5 6 courses only. Computer requirements We recommend that you have access to a computer with the internet and are able to do the following: Send and receive s Access and contribute to Online Campus discussion forums Download documents Carry out online research You will also need to submit your assessments online. Note: We use Microsoft software and the extra resources we provide online for your study are in this format. If you need to buy software, you can buy it at a special academic price from most software retailers (generally about a third of the normal retail cost). You will need proof you have been accepted into a course. Your letter confirming your enrolment will provide this. There is a list of Microsoft software retailers at microsoft.com/nz/retailers We also recommend you install virus protection software. We have a helpdesk that can give you technical help or support.
