1 Diploma in Multimedia and Web Development 2016 For New Zealand Citizens & Permanent Residents The Diploma in Multimedia and Web Development (DipMWD) is a one year, full-time programme (or equivalent part-time) which offers you diploma level studies in a stimulating environment and provides a pathway to a specialist applied qualification in web development and multimedia. The DipMWD programme enables graduates to pursue a professional career in the information technology industry. In particular, the programme is designed to: Prepare graduates to be effective in multimedia and web development with expertise in technical components of the discipline; Provide a well-defined, relevant, basic curriculum with scope for rapid and flexible adoption as technology advances; Promote professionalism and independence in learning; Provide flexible study modes and the capacity to develop individual study initiatives and directions; Provide components which incorporate problem solving, analysis and research. Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: Standard Academic Entry Requirement A minimum of University Entrance or An equivalent qualification or Have been awarded a Certificate in Computing Level 3 or equivalent or a higher computing programme within New Zealand. Non-Standard Academic Entry Requirement 60 Credits of successful study at an approved Level 4 or above programme at an accredited tertiary institution or At least 75 Level 2 NCEA credits in a maximum of four subjects in one year Provisional Entry Applicants who do not meet the criteria above, but present evidence of ability to succeed (eg. maturity, life experience, work experience, other study) or Those who narrowly fail to meet the entry criteria above. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful study in English, approved scores on TOEFL (550 with a TWE score of 4) or IELTS (6.0 Academic) tests, completion of accepted international equivalents, or completion of an EIT Hawke s Bay assessment. Entry with credit You may already have some knowledge or skills that can be recognised as part of your intended study. This may take a number of different forms including study while at high school, study at a private training establishment, workplace training, other tertiary study, life experiences or voluntary work. If you think you may qualify, you may want to apply for Cross Credit or Recognition of Prior Learning.
3 Cross Credit is based on the equivalency of courses or qualifications. You would apply for Cross Credit if you have passed a very similar course at the same level. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is based on the assessment of your current knowledge and skills. You would apply for RPL if you had gained the relevant knowledge and skills through life experiences and informal learning situations. You will be asked to provide details of anything that you would like considered as credit toward your intended programme of study, as part of your application. You must apply prior to enrolment. RPL and Cross Credit cannot be awarded for a course if you are already enrolled in that course. An original transcript or notice of results from the institute at which you previously studied (or verified copies) will be required for all applications. Cross Credits may be granted from other degree programmes and from sub-degree programmes such as the Diploma in Information and Communications Technology (Level 5). For further information and enquiries about RPL and Cross Credit please contact the School of Computing Secretary, on (06) , ext A student who intends to enrol in the DipMWD as a full-time student, and who has been granted a Cross Credit or RPL, may need to enrol in additional courses offered in the Bachelor of Computing Systems to qualify for allowances. Please refer to the Student Finances section in this document for more information. Class times Classes are scheduled between 8.00am and 5.00pm, Monday through Friday. Individual Study Hours Approximately two hours of individual study for each classroom hour. Facilities In the state-of-the-art Information Technology Complex, there are nine networked computer laboratories with between 24 and 30 student stations in each. The rooms are environmentally controlled, with data show equipment in each room. There are specific labs for software development, hardware, multimedia and a room for computer study. The facility also has a 50-seat tiered lecture theatre. Assessments All assessments for the DipMWD are marked internally. Assessments consist of examinations, assignments, tests, practical demonstrations and projects. Assessment is continuous throughout the semester, with two weeks of examinations at the end of each semester. Programme Information To qualify for the DipMWD, students must have passed the courses (or their equivalent) listed below. The structure of the diploma is summarised in the following table. Courses may be offered in different timeslots or cancelled if there is insufficient enrolment. Textbooks are required for several courses and the cost for textbooks is not included in the course fee.

Students will be able to translate a program specification into solutions and code, to solve problems, to conduct testing of solutions, and to fix errors. C: ITDT5.220 Data ITWD5.320 Internet & Web Page Development To provide students with knowledge of the concepts of the Internet and Web page design. C: ITSP5.200 Packages 1 or evidence of knowledge and skills Level 6 ITDP6.292 Level 6 Project Multimedia & Web Development To provide students with the opportunity to apply a range of techniques and technologies in the solution of a complete realistic problem in an area that specifically relates to the Diploma programme being undertaken, in this case Multimedia. P: Each project proposal will be considered by an academic supervisor and will only be approved if the student has completed courses that are considered to be an appropriate preparation for the specific project ITED6.330 Electronic Design Process and Practice To introduce students to basic graphic art design practices, to identify and explore design principles and elements and to explore visual communication techniques P: ITWD Internet & Web Page Development
7 ITMM6.370 Multimedia To provide students with the knowledge of the issues pertaining to the design of Multimedia applications and the tools used to create a Multimedia application for use in a commercial or education field. P: ITSP Packages or evidence of knowledge and skills ITWD6.400 Advanced Internet & Web Page Development To provide students with knowledge of the concepts of client-side Web development, including HTML tags, forms, Cascading Style Sheets, client-side scripting and Web site management. P: ITWD Internet & Web Page Development Level 7 ITEL7.101 Digital Learning Technologies To provide students with knowledge and practical experience in the emerging digital technologies within the educational and training environment. P/C: ITEC6.390 E-Commerce ITWD7.350 Web Application Development To provide students with the knowledge and skills for developing client-server and web-based applications in the Intranet/Internet environment. P: ITDT5.220 Data, ITWD Advanced Internet and Web Page Design, ITPR Programming 1 or evidence of knowledge and skills Practicum, work experience The DipMWD aims to produce graduates who have specialised practical and theoretical skills in this area. The majority of courses have a significant practical component. The compulsory Level 6 Multimedia Project, which is viewed as the capstone of the diploma, requires students to undertake analysis and development work and complete a project in this area, to a professional standard. The project is taken in the last semester of study and is equivalent to 150 hours of work.

You may be contacted and invited to an interview. You will receive an acceptance letter with programme information including your programme start date. Your acceptance letter may also include course selection forms, you need to complete and return them. You or your employer will receive an invoice. Organise payment of your fees.
