Todd Winton, education graduate As a learning diversity teacher working with students from Years 8 to 10, education graduate Todd Winton s role involves teaching small group classes and tailoring learning experiences to suit students individual educational needs. My Griffith degree gave me the confidence and experience with a vast range of teaching practices, he said. It also helped me develop a range of appropriate practices to improve student outcomes, he said. As for the future, Todd is particularly interested in senior transition planning. I want to work with students to ensure they are provided with as many opportunities to lead successful and fulfilling lives after school, he said. This includes preparing students with important skills and ensuring they are ready to join the workforce. Todd is currently studying a Graduate Certificate in Special Needs Education with a view to enrolling in a masters degree at Griffith. Throughout my study, I was able to participate in many different classroom contexts, giving me a deeper insight into the teaching profession. 5

You ll learn through lectures, seminars, workshops and collaborative group work and engage in a range of drama projects. Learning from industry professionals, you ll gain skills in devising theatre, acting and performance development, directing, and staging major productions. You ll gain an understanding of contemporary and historical theatre contexts and learn how to develop applied theatre projects for the community. An industry placement opportunity in your final year will further cement your practical experience. You ll perform in venues such as Metro Arts, the Judith Wright Centre and the Brisbane Powerhouse. Exchange opportunities with prestigious universities in the United Kingdom, Canada, Sweden and more are also available. Majors You can choose to focus entirely on contemporary and applied theatre courses or take a major from a different field that will complement your theatre studies. If you complete an initial teacher preparation program in secondary education drama, you will also be qualified to teach drama in school settings. Louise Bezzina is the Director of Bleach* Festival, the largest arts and cultural festival on the Gold Coast. Louise credits her applied theatre degree with opening many doors into the arts industry. It was a wonderful mix of practical training and theory, providing a fantastic foundation for my career. I particularly loved the range of artistic areas that I was able to engage and experiment with during my studies, allowing me to understand what areas of the theatre industry suited me most, she said. 6 Education Degrees Guide 2016

Prep teacher and Griffith education graduate Kelly McBurnie was recently awarded a National Excellence in Teaching Award for Innovation for her work with prep children at St Peter s Lutheran College, Indooroopilly. Bachelor of Secondary Education Taneille Crase wants to help children achieve their sporting dreams. The award-winning athlete is a member of the Griffith Sports College and said health and physical education was her favourite subject in primary school. Education is such an important part of our lives and I want to assist children achieve their personal aspirations. With my experience in the sporting field I feel like I have a lot to bring to the students, Taneille said. Undergraduate education degrees 9

Professional experience placements The School of Education and Professional Studies provides students with quality on-the-job supervised teaching experiences called professional experience placements within early childhood settings and primary and secondary schools. Postgraduate education degrees Sonia Moyle, special needs education Special needs teacher Sonia Moyle said the specialist skills and knowledge she learnt in Griffith s Master of Special Needs and Intervention Education gave her the confidence to establish a new early childhood development program. Sonia also mentors pre-service teachers with the Teacher Education Centre of Excellence, and presents guest lectures on technology in the classroom. Griffith s flexible online study enabled me to schedule around full-time work and a young family while still remaining connected to my cohort and lecturers. The degree enabled me to apply the practical theory and pedagogy in my day-to-day work in teaching students with special needs. My journey as an early childhood specialist and special educator has been an experience of growth and reflection from which I have honed my craft to provide best practice for my students and their families. 11

The profound experience of having a family member cope with intellectual impairment inspired Danielle Ward to pursue a Master of Autism Studies. She hoped to use her degree to strive for positive outcomes for people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Danielle said there was an urgent need for greater knowledge and empathy regarding the social, communication and behavioural challenges facing people with developmental disabilities classed as ASDs. With some form of autism diagnosed in one in every hundred people, it s likely every teacher will come into contact with a person affected by an ASD, so to be armed with that level of professional and personal insight is invaluable, Danielle said. 14 Education Degrees Guide 2016
