2 The Administrative Information Course Title Associate Degree of Fashion Business Course Code H405 CRICOS Course Code G Department Higher Education Course Information Course DetailS Duration Full-time students will complete the course in 2 years studying 4 units per semester. Part-time students should plan to complete the course in 4 years and will normally complete 2 units per semester. International students must maintain a full-time study load. Units This associate degree course comprises 16 units. Some units are common with other associate degree courses. Credit points Each unit is allocated 3 credit points. A total of 48 credit points is required to complete the Associate Degree. Delivery site Bentley Campus Delivery mode This course comprises a mix of lectures, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Online teaching and support is provided using Polytechnic West s online learning environment known as E-Campus. Onshore international students must study no more than 25% of their studies online. There are usually 3.5 hours of timetabled delivery per unit per week. You are expected to attend all timetabled lectures, tutorials and workshops. You are expected to undertake a further 6.5 hours study per unit per week in their own time. Delivery period Two semesters a year. Each semester comprises 14 weeks of study, plus two examination weeks. Intakes February and July. Introduction Associate Degree of Fashion Business The aim of the course is to provide a paraprofessional fashion business qualification that equips graduates with the underpinning practical and theoretical knowledge for a career in a range of fashion business and commercial environments. The course may provide eligible graduates seamless articulation into further studies at university. The Associate Degree of Fashion Business has been designed to provide an understanding and application of modern fashion business and legal practices pertaining to the fashion industry and an application of entrepreneurial practices and innovation using research and local industries to encourage evaluation, critical thinking and analysis that is relevant within the designer fashion industry. The Associate Degree of Fashion Business will require you to (have): Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the technical and theoretical knowledge in Fashion with an understanding of the underlying principles and concepts that apply to the field of Business. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the concepts and theory associated sustainable design and production processes that apply to the fashion industry within the field of Business. Develop conceptual and theoretical understanding of business practices with a particular in-depth understanding and application of modern business and legal practices pertaining to the fashion industry. An ability to effectively communicate and present fashion business intellectual knowledge and ideas as an individual and in a multi-cultural team. Cognitive skills to identify analyse and evaluate fashion and business information from a range of sources. Cognitive, analytical and creative thinking skills to demonstrate a broad understanding and ability to communicate fashion business concepts in some depth. Cognitive, analytical and creative thinking skills to interpret and explain sometimes complex fashion business problems and an ability to generate solutions. An ability to use initiative and judgement to solve problems, plan and identify solutions in fashion business paraprofessional practice. An ability to adapt fundamental business principles, concepts and techniques to familiar and unfamiliar contextual situations in the fashion industry within the field of business. An ability to use and adjust knowledge and skills in different contexts and apply to further studies within the field of Business and the Fashion Industry. The capacity to practice professionally and an ability to exercise ethical responsibility as an individual or within teams, and recognise the need to engage in lifelong learning within the field of Business and the Fashion Industry.

3 Employment outcomes Graduates of the Associate Degree of Fashion Business are suited to careers in the private and public business sectors across a range of fashion and commercial industries. 5 UNIT SYNOPSES Web Technologies for the Fashion Industry (HFB101) This unit provides practical skills to effectively prepare and appraise a wide range of website design, e-marketing and etailing concepts identified in fashion business practices through the world wide web. Principles of e-marketing objectives and the inclusion of social media strategies are explored and developed through analysis and application. Product Development and Sustainability (HFB102) This unit provides the skills and knowledge to manage and evaluate the product development supply chain, including commercial development, viability, production processes and sale of fashion designs. You will apply a sound knowledge of the concepts and theory associated with sustainable design and environmentally and ethically sustainable production practices that relate to the fashion industry. Contemporary Influences on Fashion Culture (HFB103) This unit provides the necessary skills and theoretical knowledge to enable analytical review of significant influences on contemporary fashion design. Current individual preferences, social and cultural stimuli and future directions in contemporary fashion design are investigated and identified. Communication in Business (HFB104) This unit focuses on the skills, knowledge, behaviour and strategies used when communicating in the contemporary work environment. It will include aspects of developing and implementing presentation skills, individual and team skills, coaching and mentoring, organisational culture, conflict management, negotiation and cross cultural interaction. Various communication processes and systems are covered to ensure that the gathering and dissemination of information and organisational knowledge is effectively implemented in the organisation. The Fashion Design Process (HFB105) This unit provides broad technical and theoretical knowledge to construct fashion design briefs, and to prepare design concepts for commercial production and an ability to analyse and communicate conceptual fashion business principles. Fashion Forecasting and Consumer Behaviour (HFB106) This unit provides progressive expertise and broad understanding to advance and assess the marketable viability of apparel production by developing conceptual and theoretical understanding of market and consumer trends within the Fashion Industry. Interpretation of product progression, trend analysis and forecasting and consumer behaviour strategies will be effectively communicated through fashion business concepts. The Marketing Environment (HBU101) This unit is designed to provide a foundation on modern marketing philosophies and practices. It aims to give the necessary theoretical and analytical skills to enable an understanding of the role and practices of marketing in an organisation. Major issues that will be explored include: marketing orientation; strategic marketing; customer characteristics; competitive positioning; market research; target marketing strategies; and current topics in marketing. The Principles of Management (HBU106) This introductory unit is primarily concerned with the definitions, concepts, principles and theories necessary to develop a clear understanding of the tasks and roles managers need to play in successful organisations. This unit explores the gap, along with the consequences, evident between conventional management wisdom and what is practised in organisations and the attributes required of effective managers and leaders. It also provides a broad spectrum of skills to support effective decision making including problem definition, consideration of different options for action and the analytical, written and presentation skills needed to convey these effectively. Develop Your Digital Fashion ID (HFB201) This unit has been constructed to provide you with opportunities to develop and practice realistic business skills applied to the global online environment. Experimental learning activities reviewing current trends will be scrutinised, risks and prospects of online marketing will be investigated reflecting the dynamic nature of the online environment and the implication of independent digital identities. Fashion Trade and Promotion (HFB202) This unit provides the opportunity to develop and practise realistic business skills investigating in depth global fashion trade concepts. The relevance of trade fairs and fashion shows will be explored and analysed reflecting the fashion buyer/designer s schedule and seasonal operational plan. Experiential learning activities will provide opportunities to investigate and reflect on global fashion promotion. Fashion Business Law (HFB203) Fashion business law focuses on providing a balanced, unbiased body of statutes and principles that assist in protecting and regulating the interests of all parties involved when conducting activities pertaining to the fashion industry. You will explore and investigate modern legal business practices such as copyright and contract law, business structures, and consumer law contextualized for the Fashion business.

6 Fashion Business Development and Planning (HFB204) This unit provides theoretical understanding of business practices with a particular in-depth understanding and application of contextual Fashion business concepts. Essential criteria such as finance, business registration, intellectual property protection, market research, budgeting and overall feasibility studies pertaining to the fashion industry are analysed and evaluated. Innovation and Entrepreneurial Practices (HFB205) This unit provides creative thinking strategies to recognise opportunities and execute sound management methods to incorporate innovation and entrepreneurial practices within a fashion enterprise. The entrepreneurial economy will be explored and successful business models promoting innovation in design and product development will be identified and analysed. Accounting in the Fashion Industry (HFB207) This unit provides the theoretical and practical requirements necessary to interpret and explain sometimes complex business accounting operations, an ability to analyse the distinct systems of accounting in the fashion industry and to generate solutions pertaining to the small business entrepreneur. International Business (HBU213) This unit has been constructed with a combination of theoretical understandings, principles, models and experiential learning activities to provide you with opportunities to develop and practice realistic business skills applied to organisations in the international business environment. Premium Brand Management and Marketing (HFB206) This unit develops expertise and knowledge through theoretical frameworks in fashion design, brand management and marketing within the premium product industry. It will provide future entrepreneurs and executives with the ability to successfully navigate a highly competitive global marketplace, taking into account product leadership, innovation and creative branding in areas of premium and prestige within the fashion and textile industry.

7 Admission and Enrolment Requirements To enter a higher education qualification at Polytechnic West, you should have: Successfully completed Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) or its year 12 Australian or International equivalent with a score of at least 50 in, English, Literature or EALD, or Successfully completed the full International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum of 24 points from six subjects at one sitting. Three of the subjects must be at the higher level. One of the six subjects should be English, or Successfully completed a 12 month VET Certificate IV in a relevant area, or Completed a relevant qualification in another country that is deemed by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR) as being at least comparable to an AQF Certificate IV. School Leavers Polytechnic West will accept an AQF/TAFE Certificate IV as a basis for admission to most courses, however school leavers using a Certificate IV achieved during their Years 11 and 12 must also have: achieved a WACE; and meet Polytechnic West s English Language requirement. English Language Requirements Entrance is subject to English Language Admission requirements, such as: IELTS score of 6.0 (Academic Version) overall with no individual band lower than 5.5; or TOEFL score of 530 or above; or Medium of instruction at school being English, and satisfactory grades in English in final examinations (such as C grade at 0 level). Alternative Admission Requirements Students may be of mature age with relevant work or other practical experience and a demonstrated level of general education, which provides them with a reasonable chance of successfully completing the program. Mature age selection criteria will be based on an assessment of the applicant s previous educational record, work and other relevant experience and interest in the field of study. Students meeting admission requirements will be offered a place in the course and invited to enrol. You must complete the approved enrolment form and pay your fees to secure your place in the course. All enrolled students agree to abide by PWA s General and Academic Regulations and Student Code of Conduct. 8 Enrolment with Advanced Standing If you have undertaken previous study in a similar field you may be eligible to enrol with advanced standing and have your previous learning recognised. If you have completed VET courses, you may be eligible to receive advanced standing as set out in the table below: Advanced Standing is the granting of credit towards the completion of a course based on previous studies that has been judged to have units that are equivalent to those in the course. International students should refer Advanced Standing enquiries to Education and Training International. 9 Student Rights and Responsibilities It is the responsibility of every student to be aware of Polytechnic West s General and Academic Regulations, the Student Code of Conduct and the policies and procedures that relate to your rights and responsibilities as a student. These can be found in the Higher Education Student Handbook and on the Polytechnic West website at International students please refer to the Education and Training International website for further responsibilities as an international student in Australia. You are advised to obtain a Student I.D. card which will provide you with access to library services at Polytechnic West campuses and with our partner organisations. The Student I.D. card will also be required as proof of identity when you attend examinations. Assessment of the Associate Degree of fashion business Assessment information and marking criteria for each unit will be provided in the Unit Guide at the start of your study semester and you must abide by the assessment requirements set by the Polytechnic West Academic Regulations and the Unit Guide. You will be given feedback on your performance in all assignments including the criteria against which the final mark was determined. Submission dates will not be altered unless an Application for Deferred Assessment has been completed and approved. Graduation with the Associate Degree of fashion business To be awarded this qualification you must pass all the required units within the course. Once these are completed you will be entitled to apply to graduate with an Associate Degree of Fashion Business. Pathways Students graduating with the Associate Degree of Fashion Business are eligible for credit towards a Bachelor degree at one of Polytechnic West s articulating Universities. Check our website for up-to-date credit recognition arrangements. Study Fees Associate Degree of Fashion Business International Students The tuition fee for international students is: $1, per unit. This fee is paid to ETI. Please refer to the Education and Training International website for payment details and refund policy. Domestic Students The tuition fee for domestic students is $1, per unit paid using one of PWA s payment options; or $1, deferred (includes 25% FEE-HELP Loan Fee) A full-time study load consists of four units per semester. These fees are valid for Semester 1 and Semester 2, Fees are reviewed on an annual basis.
