Building The Foundations For The Next Generation Of Athletics Champions

Athletics 365: Workshop Outcomes What is Athletics 365? Where has Athletics 365 Come from? How to deliver Athletics 365 - Practical Session - Delivering How to Assess Athletics 365 - Practical Session - Assessing Athletics 365 Resources - Practical Session Have a go

What is Athletics 365? A consistent approach to young athlete development across England ( like for like activities in every club); A young athlete progression pathway (From playground Podium); A delivery Syllabus for coaches for every athletics event (and other areas such as physical conditioning); A recognition and reward scheme for athletes; A system which provides the fundamental skills which underpin all athletics events and that are applicable to all other sports (Developing athleticism, not just athletic development); A Club Youth Development Programme

Athletics 365: Pathway

Athletics 365: Challenges & Curriculum 9 Stages of progression (Red Gold); Recognition and reward for competence; Process and outcome driven; Based on other successful sports; Developed using existing resources; Four key area of athlete development: - Physical conditioning; - Technical and tactical (Athletics events); - Lifestyle and support; - Psycho behavioural;

Why do we need Athletics 365? There is some great work and good practice happening across the country and this we need to build upon. There is also a range of challenges that face grass roots athletics, these include: Inconsistent delivery of child development activities across England; Coaches with the least experience working with children; Athletes are specialising too early; Too much focus on outcome (i.e. distance jumped or time run) rather than on Process (i.e. technique when running or jumping); Groups based on chronological age not developmental stage.

Current Situation Excessive ratios of coach to athlete; Lack of volunteers; Junior sections have limited areas to use due to senior groups; Lacks structure and excitement ; Losing out to other sports; Support resources for junior club sections are too confusing and there are too many. Athletics 365 sets out to address the above issues while building on the existing good practice

Where has Athletics 365 come from? Athletics 365 is not new ; it is an overarching club development system that makes the best use of a range of existing products, these include: UKA Technical Templates Elevating Athletics; Create Development FUNS for everyone; Pace Setter; Club Futures; UKA Awards; Sports hall; QuadKids

Athletics 365 Benefits Skilled children coaches leading Athletics 365 sessions; Adult and young leaders given specific skills required to work with young people; Focused on Long Term Athlete Development; Excellent supporting resources; Focuses both on process and outcome;. Recognition and reward system; Focused on development stage, not chronological age;

How to Deliver Athletics 365 Grouping of Athletes Term Programmes - Creating a 8-14 weeks programme of delivery Delivering a session Practical Session Review of session and programme

Athletics 365: Grouping of Athletes Recommendation is three group tiers: Practicing Stages 1-3 (Red Green) - Ages 8 11 approximately Focus on fundamentals of movement and athleticism (R, J, T); Developing Stages 4 6 (Purple Black) - Ages 12-15 approximately Focus on the fundamentals of R, J, T, progressing to event specific technique; Emerging Stages 7 9 (Bronze Gold) - Ages 15+ approximately Event group /event specific training. Athletics 365 ages are just guidelines and development should be based on developmental stage more than chronological age

Athletics 365 Format: Terms & Times Three main terms aligned with school term; Programme provided to clubs 10, 12 or 14 week option; 2 days per week and 1 ½ hours per session Suggested days: - Monday and Wednesday; or - Tuesday and Thursday; or - Weekend Suggested times: - 5.00pm 6.30pm (prior to main club); or - 6.30pm 8.00pm (on alternate nights); or - 10am 11.30am (weekend).

Athletics 365 Format: Term Activity Term One and Two Based around fundamentals, multi-skills and Sports Hall type activities; Run in a sports hall (school or local leisure centre); 2 Skills tests per term and one mini competition; Competitions linked to Sports Hall; Term Three Based around fundamentals, multi-skills and outdoor athletics activities; Run at the local athletics track; 2 Skills tests per term and one mini competition; Competitions linked to Quad Kids.

Athletics 365 Format: Term Activity Your first term when introducing Athletics 365 should be used to assess at what stage each athlete should start the programme; Clubs may wish to run Star Track schemes at half term and the end of term holidays to provide additional practice for athletes on the Athletics 365 programme; These schemes could fall in line with the Athletics 365 assessment week Star Track schemes could also be used as a recruitment / accelerate induction period for Athletes joining the Athletics 365 Programme Term Planners can be downloaded of the Athletics 365 website www.athletics365.org

Athletics 365 Format: Session Plan Within a 90 minute session, a recommended practice plan may include the following elements: 8 11 Years 1. Game / warm-up (10 mins) relating to session; 2.
