Day One: 11:45 12:45 Sessions A Vision for Sport in Wales Simon Jones, Public Affairs Manager and Tom Overton, Regional Manager Sport Wales Presentation followed by questions and answers Workshop for those unfamiliar with the sector wide Vision for Sport in Wales that Sport Wales launched in January The workshop will cover how the Vision was developed as well as the key themes. To enable all attendees to have an understanding of the sector s shared Vision and the key themes within the document Swim for Life Gareth Oldham, Sports Development Manager, Powys County Council Powerpoint Presentation For the last few decades Powys County Council has invested a large amount of time and finance in a comprehensive Swimming Programme, either through the Schools Curricular or latterly, through their coordinated Starfish swimming lessons. The workshop will provide attendees with the background to the schools swimming programme, the nationally accredited Starfish swimming scheme (ASA authority of the year award 2007), together with the Free Swim Scheme, to ensure every child in Powys, is able to swim by the age of 11.
To pass on the excellent work that has been undertaken in Powys, to other Welsh Local Authorities. Breakdown: 40 minute workshop, followed by 20 minute Q & A Welsh Netball Pathway Mike Fatkin, Chief Executive Welsh Netball Presentation and facilitated Q&A Welsh Netball will provide illustrations of some of the strategic and operational changes which the governing body is trying to implement across Wales with the aim of working much more closely with local authorities and grass roots organisations in delivering programmes of all kinds. The session will also look at how Welsh Netball is trying to empower its regions as part of the aim of growing and developing netball at all levels To provide examples of how Welsh Netball is working with local communities to knit together the pathway from community to club to elite performer. 1 hour
Sporting Excellence: Working with World Champions (a case study of Becky James) Delivered by: Martin Evans & Kath Brown (Sport Wales Institute) Presentation plus Q & A The Sport Wales Institute is the Elite Performance function of Sport Wales and is tasked with implementing many of the programmes and initiatives outlined in the Sport Wales Elite Sport Strategy Elite practitioners within the Sport Wales Institute work as a team and with partners to ensure all eligible athletes and coaches receive a fully integrated service which meets their needs and is quality assured. The Matrix of support offered is bespoke but predominantly includes :- Sports Science support, including o Performance Analysis, Sports Psychology, Nutrition, Strength and Conditioning, Physiology and Performance Lifestyle TM ; Sports Medicine support, including o Medical consultation and screening, Physiotherapy (pre-hab and re-hab) and soft tissue massage; Elite Coaching support and Funding Support This session examines how each discipline of support within the Institute work in an integrated fashion with both the athlete and their coach and governing body. It will demonstrate how detailed the level of support can be and also the level of commitment from both athlete and practitioner. Provide an understanding of what it takes to help support and prepare elite athletes to compete successfully for Wales and GB on the world stage.
Growing a skilled and passionate workforce : The Outdoor Partnership Experience Tracey Evans, Senior Project Manager Simon Jones, Outdoor Activities Development Officer Presentation Group discussion Q & A The outdoor sector is generally considered a tough environment in which to operate. Leader / instructor/ coaching courses are time intensive, costly and technical. Participation demands for set up and strike down times. So how is it that the Outdoor Partnership volunteer recruitment, development, deployment and mentoring scheme for 2010 supported over 200 volunteers representing 40 local outdoor clubs? Plans for the programme will support 60 clubs and train and mentor 250 volunteers! Tracey Evans and Simon Jones will share some of their experiences and learning outcomes. Share experiences with others within the industry Demonstrate good practice Highlight an approach to Growing the Volunteer Workforce Showcase work undertaken to developing community outdoor activities in North Wales Breakdown: 20 min presentation / 20 min workshop / 20 min Q&A
Day One: 13:00 14:00 Sessions As above with the addition of a new Skills for Life in Sport option: Gymnastics Skills for life in sport Becky Johnson Planet Gymnastics General Manager and Head Gymnastics Coach. Workshop approx 20 minutes presentation followed by 40 minutes of facilitated discussions Gymnastics in itself can provide many of the fundamental skills required for a happy and successful life of sport and activity. When an area benefits from: - Schools where teachers have the confidence and expertise to introduce physical literacy through gymnastics. (100 words) - Extra-curricular school gymnastics clubs for children to enjoy and develop their growing abilities. - A club where large numbers of young people, teenagers and adults can find the activity that is right for them for enjoyment and perhaps to excellence The benefit can be felt by all the sports active in that area. Planet Gymnastics working with local schools and Sport Cardiff s sports development team have grown and innovated to provide a broad offer to the Grangetown area of Cardiff. Illustrate the benefit of fundamental skills and their delivery through partnerships of school and clubs. Consider how effective links from schools into community clubs can develop in the future to support Sport Wales aspiration of every child hooked on sport for life.
