The Municipality of East Hants Department of Recreation and Culture operates the East Hants Swimming Pool in Milford and coordinates various programs throughout East Hants all year long. The program takes place at the following schools: Riverside Education Centre, Hants North Rural High and Uniacke District School. Notices will go home with students in October to register for the program. Funded in part by NS Department of Education

COMMUNITY GRANTS PROGRAM The Municipality of East Hants accepts applications yearround to the Community Grants program, which includes events, leadership, youth programming, facility access and new recreation and culture initiatives. RECREATION EQUIPMENT LOAN PROGRAM Equipment loan kits are supplied with various pieces of sport/leisure equipment for the purpose of creating a more physically active community! Equipment loans are free and can be borrowed for up to one week. Some of the kits available are parachutes, soccer balls, basketballs, skipping ropes, snow shoes, and so much more! Next deadlines: October 1st, 2015 and January 1st, 2016. http://jumpstart.canadiantire.ca/ Canadian Tire Jumpstart & Hockey Canada The Big Play Fund This funding is for youth between ages 4-18 registering for minor hockey in financial need. The Big Play Fund provides funding up to $500 per child on a first come first serve basis. ACTIVE EAST HANTS LEADERSHIP TEAM This Fall, youth aged 13-16 are invited to be champions for healthy living in their communities! They will learn to build programs and events in their community, help deliver those new programs and encourage youth to join in and live a healthy lifestyle. As a part of the team, participants will receive leadership training including First Aid and HIGH FIVE, Team building activities, learn new games and activities, outdoor adventure and have an opportunity to practice their new skills in a volunteer setting! The Active East Hants Leadership Team program will take place in three schools: Riverside Education Centre, Hants North Rural High and Uniacke District School. HIGH FIVE SPORT TRAINING - SPACE IS LIMITED - Course Date: 6pm-10pm Thursday, October 8 Location: Lloyd E Matheson Centre, Elmsdale Cost: $30 This 4-hour training session is designed for competitive and community coaches, and club/organization program leaders aged 16+. Aligned with the Fundamentals and Learn to Train stages of Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD), HIGH FIVE Sport focuses on the social, emotional, and cognitive development and wellbeing of athletes and participants. AQUATIC LEADERSHIP PROGRAM Swim Instructor Course Dates: September 18-20 Cost: $200.00; minimum 4 participants The Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor course prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate the swimming strokes and related skills found in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program. Candidates acquire proven teaching methods, planning skills, and a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques. Prerequisite: 15 years old plus Bronze Cross completion Bronze Star Saturdays 8:45am - 9:45am Cost: $ 95.00 Ability is the only prerequisite to Bronze Star. If you re a good swimmer, Bronze Star pro-vides challenging training for your body and your brain. Become a stronger swimmer! Develop problem-solving and decision-making skills. Learn CPR and the skills needed to be your own personal lifeguard. Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid Tuesdays 6:00pm - 8:00 pm Cost: $125.00 (plus books) Bronze Medallion is the first step to becoming a certified swim instructor or lifeguard. Teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the 4 components of wa-ter-rescue education judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a 500 meter timed swim. Prerequisite: Must be 13 years old OR be certified in Bronze Star. Bronze Cross Wednesdays 6:00pm 8:00pm Cost: $125.00 Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a pre-requisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor Certifications. Includes a timed 600 meter swim. BECOME A LIFEGUARD You Can Do It! Emergency First Aid Saturday, October 17 9:00 am 3:00 pm This course is recognized by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Environment. Emergency First Aid: Includes CPR-A certification (Adult CPR). Emergency First Aid is for people who require a general knowledge of first aid principles and the emergency treatment of injuries. Skills include: victim assessment, rescue breathing, CPR, choking, and allergies, managing severe bleeding, heart attack and stroke. National Lifeguard Service Award & Standard First Aid with CPR C 9am-5pm Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays November 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 27 & 28 Cost: $200.00 (+ books) Lifeguards are more than just good swimmers. They are water rescue professionals trained in emergency care. They prevent accidents. They identify hazards and determine safe practices. They educate the public about the hazards and risks associated with aquatic activities and how to be Water Smart. And they are trained to spot potential trouble and intervene before it becomes life-threatening. Lifeguarding is a fun, exciting and rewarding job. Lifeguarding is also a job that carries enormous responsibility. Which is why lifeguards take courses and train hard for events they hope will never happen and which they work hard to prevent. EXERCISE CLASSES IN THE WATER Aquafit Classes A fun invigorating workout in the pool. Requires no swimming skills but promises to get your feet moving and heart pumping! Shallow-end Class Times: Monday, Wednestday & Friday 9:00am -10:00am Monday & Thursday 7:30pm - 8:30pm *Fitness belts are available during fitness class times; participants are welcome to follow our shallow-water classes from the deep-water at anytime. Aqua Zumba Wednesdays 7:30pm - 8:30pm (shallow-end) Splash your way into shape with an invigorating low-impact aquatic exercise. Known as the Zumba pool party, the Aqua Zumba program gives new meaning to the idea of a refreshing workout. Integrating the Zumba philosophy with traditional aquatic fitness disciplines, Aqua Zumba blends it all together into a workout that s cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most of all, exhilarating beyond belief. Gentle Functional Fitness Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:00-10:00am Cardiovascular training, functional fitness, muscular endurance and strength, balance and flexibility training. Youth Swim Fit Thursdays 6:00pm 7:15pm Cost: $ 105.00 (limit 12 participants) This program is perfect for youth who strive to be in great shape, or competitive swimmers who are looking to stay in shape during the off-season. The focus of Youth Swim Fit is to keep swimmers overall cardiovascular endurance and muscle development while further refining technique in all four strokes, associated turns, and dives. Prerequisite: Complete Swimmer 6; ages 10-17 All classes are pro-rated after the 2nd week. Fitness classes are scheduled from August 31st until December 24th. That s 17 weeks of classes! Registration is unlimited. Recreational Synchronized Swimming Ages 8-12: Tuesdays, 6pm-7:15pm & Thursdays, 5:15pm-6:15 pm Ages 13-17: Tuesdays, 7:15pm-8:30pm & Thursdays, 6:20pm-7:20pm Cost: $135.00 per session (includes bathing cap, nose plug, swim suit) This program introduces swimmers to the sport of synchro. Participants develop comfort in the water, basic sculling skills, and basic synchro positions with continued skill development as levels increase.
