B.M.C. DURFEE HIGH SCHOOL ADMISSION POLICY fr CAREER VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS I. INTRODUCTION An admissin prcess is necessary fr career vcatinal technical prgrams in which there are mre applicants than penings, therefre an admissins plicy is necessary. All applicants t the vcatinal technical educatin prgrams fr grades nine thrugh twelve at B.M.C. Durfee High Schl will be evaluated using the selectin criteria cntained in this Admissin Plicy. The Fall River Schl Cmmittee apprved this plicy n. II. EQUAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY B.M.C. Durfee High Schl admits students and makes available t them its advantages, privileges and curses f study withut regard t race, clr, sex, religin, natinal rigin, sexual rientatin, gender identity, r disability. If there is a student with limited English prficiency, a qualified staff member frm B.M.C. Durfee High Schl will assist the applicant in cmpleting the necessary frms and assist in interpreting during the entire applicatin and admissin prcess upn the request f the applicant. III. ELIGIBILITY Fall River resident Grade 8 students will receive a curse selectin sheet in the spring befre entering ninth grade. Eighth grade students may select Freshman Explratry/ Durfee Discvery as an elective. Students wh select Freshman Explratry/ Durfee Discvery will cmplete an nline survey indicating their preferred chices fr the prgrams t explre. Students have the pprtunity t participate in a full year Freshman Explratry prgram. Any ninth grade student wh is a student in B.M.C. Durfee High Schl is eligible t apply fr fall admissin t a grade 10 CVTE prgram subject t the availability f penings. Tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students may apply subject t availability f space and the student s ability t cmplete the prgram f studies in the cndensed time frame. Fall River resident students will be evaluated using the selectin criteria cntained in this Admissin Plicy. Pririty fr admissin is given t Fall River Schl District residents. Students wh are nt residents f the Fall River Schl District are eligible t apply fr

Transfer students frm state apprved CH 74 vcatinal educatinal prgrams are eligible t apply fr fall admissin r admissin during the schl year t the vcatinal technical educatin prgrams grades 9-12 prvided they expect t be prmted t the grade they seek t enter by their current schl. Transfer students will be evaluated using the selectin criteria cntained in this Admissin Plicy. IV. ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE B.M.C. Durfee High Schl is a public schl lcated in Fall River, Massachusetts. B.M.C. Durfee High Schl is accredited by the New England Assciatin f Schls and Clleges. B.M.C. Durfee High Schl is cmmitted t prviding quality vcatinal technical educatin prgrams. It is the respnsibility f the B.M.C. Durfee High Schl Principal t supervise the administratin f the plicies and prcedures required t admit and enrll applicants in cnfrmity with this Admissin Plicy. B.M.C. Durfee High Schl has an Admissin Cmmittee appinted by the Principal. The cmmittee cnsists f a member f the Administratin, Directr f Guidance, Special Educatin, and the Directr f CVTE. Respnsibilities f the Admissins Cmmittee include: A. determinatin f standards fr admissin B. develpment and implementatin f admissin prcedures C. prcessing f applicatins D. ranking f students E. acceptance f students accrding t the prcedure and criteria in the admissin plicy F. establishment and maintenance f a waiting list f acceptable candidates B.M.C. Durfee High Schl participates in the Schl Chice Prgram. V. RECRUITMENT PROCESS 1. The CVTE Directr disseminates infrmatin abut the prgrams thrugh a variety f methds. a. A guidance cunselr breakfast will be held each year t update Fall River public schl guidance cunselrs n the admissins prcess and CVTE prgram f studies. b. Fall infrmatinal presentatins t 8th grade classes in lcal middle schls are scheduled. c. A virtual tur f the CVTE prgrams, academic pathways infrmatin, an applicatin and ther pertinent infrmatin is available n B.M.C. Durfee CVTE webpage at www.fallriverschls.rg
d. An Open Huse is held fr prspective students and their parent(s)/guardian(s) have an pprtunity t visit all vcatinal technical prgrams and speak with teachers as well as view a presentatin abut all fferings. e. Grade 8 student turs are scheduled during the schl day t allw students t visit the CVTE prgrams and meet the teachers. f. Parent(s)/guardian(s) may schedule individual visits at a mutually cnvenient time. g. Brchures, which describe career technical prgrams, are distributed during the 8th grade visitatins and the Open Huse. VI. APPLICATION PROCESS APPLICATION PROCESS - FOR ADMISSION* TO THE NINTH, TENTH, ELEVENTH GRADE PROGRAMS 1. Students interested in applying fr admissin t Career Technical educatin prgrams must: a. Obtain a CVTE admissins applicatin frm B.M.C. Durfee High Schl. b. Return the cmpleted applicatin frm by the deadline. 2. If incmplete applicatins are received, the fllwing prcedures will be fllwed: a. The student and the applicant's parent(s)/guardian(s) will be ntified. b. If after ntifying the parent(s)/guardian(s), the applicatin remains incmplete fr ten schl days, the applicatin will be vided. LATE APPLICATIONS Applicatins received after the deadline will be accepted and evaluated using the same criteria as ther applicatins and their cmpsite scre will be cmputed. They will be placed in rank rder n the established waiting list. TRANSFER STUDENTS Applicatins frm students wh are enrlled in ther high schls will be cnsidered fr admissin (including admissin during the schl year). All transfer applicants must attend an infrmatinal meeting/interview. If the applicant r parent/guardian cannt prvide transprtatin, an fficial frm B.M.C. Durfee High Schl will g t the lcal schl t meet with the applicant. Their applicatins will be evaluated accrding t the selectin criteria cntained in this Admissin Plicy. WITHDRAWN STUDENTS Students wh withdraw frm a B.M.C. Durfee High Schl s career vcatinal technical educatin prgram may reapply fr admissin t anther B.M.C. Durfee High Schl s career vcatinal technical educatin prgram fllwing the prcedures cntained in this admissin plicy and will be evaluated using the selectin criteria cntained in this Admissin Plicy. VII. SELECTION CRITERIA Grade 9 students wh cmplete an applicatin fr admissin t career vcatinal technical educatin prgrams participate in a full year Explratry/Durfee Discvery prgram
designed t help them learn abut their talents and interests relative t a variety f career vcatinal technical prgrams. CVTE teachers evaluate students during the explratry prgram. Students wh enrll in B.M.C. Durfee High Schl after grade nine may explre vcatinal technical prgrams that have penings, befre making a prgram selectin. The applicant ranking system is based n fur criteria: Explratry grade fr Durfee Students r average academic grades fr Transfer Students (25 pints) A/ 100-90= (25 pts) B/ 89-80= (20 pts) C/ 79-70= (15 pts) D/ 69-65= (10pts) F/ 64-0= (0 pts) attendance/ unexcused absences (25 pints) Subtract 1 pint fr each absence frm ttal f 25 pints discipline/cnduct incidents (25 pints) Subtract 1 pint fr each incident frm ttal f 25 pints interview (25 pints) Strngly Recmmended =( 25 pts) Recmmended= (20 pts) Recmmended with Reservatin (15 pts) Nt Recmmended= (0 pts) SELECTION PROCESS Students are admitted int the CVTE prgram f their chice based n their ranking due t their pint ttal fr the fur criteria. If a CVTE prgram fills, based n pint ttal, befre a student gets his/her first chice, the guidance cunselr then mves t the student s secnd r third chice fr CVTE prgram depending upn whether there is an pening in the prgram. Again, the student is admitted based upn verall pint ttal. If a students' pint ttal in all CVTE prgrams is s lw that they were nt placed in their secnd r third chice prgram because the prgrams were filled by students with higher pint ttals, the guidance cunselr will meet with the student and present a list f the prgrams with penings and ask the student t chse ne f them. The prcess cntinues until all penings are filled. TRANSFER PROCESS Students wh wish t transfer frm ne CVTE prgram t anther may apply fr transfer. Transfer requests will be cnsidered subject t the availability f penings in the requested prgram. Each transfer applicant will be interviewed and cunseled individually t determine the apprpriateness f the transfer fr the particular student.
VIII. REVIEW The applicant's parent(s)/guardian(s), upn receipt f a letter frm B.M.C. Durfee High Schl indicating that the applicant was nt accepted r was placed n a wait list fr a particular prgram, may request a review f the decisin by sending a letter requesting a review t the Principal within thirty days f the receipt f the rejectin/wait list letter. The Principal will respnd in writing t the letter with the findings f the review within thirty days.
