COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides students with a detailed overview of the staffing activities performed by organizations. It examines selection from the process of determining what type of employees are needed by the organization, when they are needed, generating a pool of qualified candidates, selecting the "best" candidate, to making a successful offer. F = less than 60% COURSE REQUIREMENTS DESCRIBED: Exams There will be three exams in this course; they will be NON cumulative and made up of approximately 60 multiplechoice questions. You will need to bring Scantron sheets and pencils for the exams. The exams will cover the book, lectures, slides, videos, presentations, and handouts. I am willing to give make up exams, if necessary. However, makeups may be of short essay format and are given and graded at my convenience. Quizzes (Best 10) There will be many short quizzes. TEN will be counted toward your grade. Since I drop some, there are NO make ups on quizzes. Comprehensive Strategic Staffing Case, Parts 1, 2, and 3. You will be randomly assigned to groups of 3 4 people to complete the comprehensive case provided in the Appendix of your textbook. (You may change your group assignment if done by the third week of class). The case gives an example of a company in need of advice on how to develop a strategic staffing plan. You will help the company by analyzing their issues and recommending solutions associated with each chapter of the text. You will prepare three written Case Reports, each worth 50 points. Part 1 of the Case incorporates issues identified for chapters 1 5; Part 2 includes chapters 6 10; and Part 3 includes chapters 11 13 plus final revisions of Parts 1 & 2. Each part should be up to 10 pages typed double spaced using excellent college level composition, spelling, and grammar. In addition, Part 3 must have a cover, a table of contents, a one page executive summary, and be in a folder or ring binder. Team Participation and Peer Evaluation of Cases Your team members NEED YOUR HELP your thoughts and ideas, your effort and work, and your participation and encouragement to complete the assignment well. To assure that group work is distributed and performed fairly, you will grade each of your team members and they will grade you as well, using the form available on Canvas. This evaluation must be submitted on Canvas by the date Part 3 of the Case is due in class. If you do not turn in a peer evaluation, you will receive a 0 for your own evaluation and the other people in the team will receive full credit as their grade from you. Please see How to Deal With a Non Cooperating Team Member on Canvas, if you have any problems with team members, including how to fire one or how to resign from a team. Homework There will be many homework assignments, each worth 5 points. Please submit the homework on CANVAS, and bring a copy in to class to refer to. I will count the best 10 toward your grade. Company Analysis Presentation Throughout the term, each group (or individual, if you wish) will be responsible to present information about the staffing practices of one company of interest to you. The presentation should be up to 10 minutes long and include at least 5 slides. Please submit the slides on Canvas by the day that you will give the presentation. Get Out of Trouble Card All work is due when assigned; no late work will be accepted. However, you will each receive a Get out of Trouble card that will allow you to hand in an assignment that is late or to redo one assignment. These are non transferable. COURSE POLICIES Attendance I expect you to attend ALL scheduled classes (P=present). However, I understand that sometimes things come up that prevent your attendance, such as illness, job search, athletics, etc. Therefore, you may have THREE free absences (A=absent), no note or excuse is required. After that I will deduct 10 points for each absence from your total points.
Also, absences will adversely affect your grade regardless of grades on your other work. (Makeup assignments are available for additional absences, if for an approved reason.) If you should come in to class after I have taken attendance, it is YOUR responsibility to assure that you are marked in tardy by the next class, so that you will not be penalized for being absent. Students must be respectful of the opinions of others. Students are free to disagree with fellow students or the professor or if it is done in a respectful manner. NOTE: use the ABC method Actively listen= repeat the meaning of the person s statement; Be positive=say something that you agree with first; Cite your different experience=say how you see the situation. Remediation. If you are asked to leave the class because of your classroom etiquette, you will be marked as absent for the entire class. You will be welcomed back for future classes as long as the disruptive behavior does not reoccur. Please note: For each credit hour of a class, students are expected to spend one hour in class PLUS an average of two hours preparing outside of class each week. have read the material prior to class Preparation and Participation As the boss of an organization you would expect your managers to be at work every day, be prepared, work hard, do what is necessary, and give excellent results. That s what I expect from you in this class. I expect you to be prepared for class. This means that you: Have read the material planned for the day Have completed any preparatory exercises Are ready to discuss and work with the material planned for that day University Statements Administrative Drop For Attendance. As per university policy, an instructor who informs students about the necessity of attendance may request the Registrar to drop the student from the class for lack of attendance. This is the required written notice about attendance. Any student who misses the equivalent of more than three weeks* will be administratively dropped from this course by the instructor.
