Welcome to QMB 3200 Economic and Business Statistics - Online CRN Spring 2011* Elias T Kirche, PhD Office Location Lutgert Hall suite 3304 (239) ekirche@fgcu.edu Office Hours by appointment only Technology Support /Help Desk (239) or (239) About the Course This course develops the basic statistical tools used in quantitative analysis in business. Topics include descriptive statistics, interval estimation, hypothesis tests, correlation and regression analysis, analysis of variance and analysis of categorical data. Emphasis is on applications, concepts and interpretation of results, rather than theory and calculations. Students use a computer software package for data analysis. NOTE: This course uses Hawkes Learning Systems (HLS) software that you must purchase through FGCU bookstore or HLS website. Learning Objectives Select, understand and apply appropriate statistical tools for descriptive, inferential and predictive analysis of quantitative and qualitative data from a variety of scenarios. Use statistical software package for data analysis; understand basic data gathering and input considerations; and be able to interpret output. Know ethical considerations in collecting data and selection of appropriate analysis tools; and know how to report results in a fair, objective and neutral manner. 1

Course Overview You must have a reliable internet connection and a PC to complete this course. On selected Fridays (see the Schedule and Progress Report section below), we will meet in a computer lab to review and discuss important topics and applications, and go over your progress in the course. It is strongly recommended you watch Hawkes Learning System instructional video before starting our course. The video can be accessed at: This course is organized in four main content modules that are to be completed in sequence. The Main Modules may be accessed through the table below as well as through the Schedule tab Each Main Module has Learning Objectives, Lessons, Quizzes, Homework, and a Readings list. The Main Modules are: Module 1: Presenting, Describing and Inferring from a Sample of Numerical Data Module 2: Simple Linear Regression and Correlation Module 3: Multiple Regression Module 4: Comparing Multiple Samples of Numerical Data Main Modules Course grade is based on how you perform on 4 categories: Course Lessons: 20% Quizzes: 25% Assignments:30% Exams: 25% Course Lessons (HLS Lessons) 20% Course lessons are part of the Hawkes Learning System (HLS) that comes with the CD- ROM and textbook for this course (see Course Material below). Each week you are responsible to review/complete a set of e-lessons accessed through the HLS software. This can be done on an online or offline mode. It is strongly recommended that you watch the Video Tour once you install the software into your computer. 2

The HLS Lessons includes a set of lessons (Instruct option on the software), practice problems with feedback to help you understand the material (Practice), and a set of online exercises/questions for you to solve and upload to our HLS course website (Certify). This last step is called Certification of individual lessons. Typically, you may take 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete each lesson. The upload is automatic if you have an internet connection. Do not worry; you will have plenty of chances to practice before submitting your lessons. As a rule, to pass a specific lesson, you should have a certification level of at least 75% (this insures you have a reasonable understanding of the subject you just studied). Do not worry; if you fail in the first attempt, you have another chance to re-certify your lessons. The due dates for individual lessons are available through the Progress Report link in HLS software. The textbook complements the online lessons, should you require additional explanations and/or practice in the subject. Further assistance can also be requested from the instructor via s, phone calls, or office visits (by appointment only). You are required to become thoroughly familiar with HLS and obtain (download) the access code to HLS website where our course is setup (similar to the familiar Angel). Through the Progress Report link in HLS software, you can review your weekly schedule of lessons, homework, quizzes and exams, and review your status in the course (grades). Completing the certification for all lessons is worth up to 20% of the final course grade. Quizzes (Web Test) 25% You have a set of online quizzes to complete related to lessons and homework at specific due dates. Quizzes are accessed through the Web Test link on your HLS software. Quiz questions have the same difficulty level found on the certification of lessons process and homework assignments. Generally, you have a window of 2 or 3 days to take the quiz, and a specific time to start and complete the quiz (such as 1 or 2 hours for example) within that window. You must correctly complete all quizzes by the due date to receive 25% of your final course grade. Assignments (ASG) 30% Economic and Business Statistics involves "learning by doing" course homework. The four homework assignments involve the analysis of sets of data determined by the instructor plus additional application and conceptual problems from the textbook. You are encouraged to submit your analysis or questions to the instructor with sufficient time for review and feedback. You should pay attention to the quality of the final work submitted since clarity, organization, and objectivity are essential part of any 3

management report. Points will be deducted for poor quality reports. The statistical analysis for all assignments will be done using Microsoft Excel 2007 (earlier versions also work). Before starting the assigned homework, you should study the set of PowerPoint slides (SLD) which includes a tutorial on how to use Microsoft Excel for statistical analysis, along with supplemental statistical concepts and links to solved problems (SP). These additional course materials are found in the Tools menu option in the HLS website The required homework and corresponding due dates is found under the Assignment section of your Progress Report, and is to be completed and submitted via through HLS website (see Communications link in the Tools HLS website). Note that there is a penalty of 10% per day for late delivery of homework. After 5 days beyond the due date, homework is not accepted. You must correctly complete 5 homework assignments by the due date to receive 30% of the final course grade. Exams (Tests) 30% Lessons, Assignments and Quizzes prepare you for course exam administered at the end of the semester. The exam will be available 3 days before the due date. You will find a link to the exams on the Test section of your Progress Report. Exams completed by the due date have a weight of 30% of the final course grade. Grades Letter grades will be assigned based on the following criteria based on total percentage: 94 and above: A 90 to less than 94: A- 88 to less than 90: B+ 83 to less than 88: B 80 to less than 83: B- 78 to less than 80: C+ 73 to less than 78: C 70 to less than 73: C- 68 to less than 70: D+ 63 to less than 68: D 60 to less than 63: D- below 60: F Incomplete will be given by exception when a limited portion of the course material has not been completed by the last exam due date, in accordance with University policy published in the Catalog. The instructor on an individual basis will review each case. 4

Schedule and Progress Report Please note: This is a hybrid class and will have class meetings at selected Fridays on campus Meeting dates: 1/21; 2/11; 3/18; 4/8, from 1pm to 4pm, in HE 202. The Progress Report provides a map of the course by due dates and includes an index to Lessons, Assignment, Quizzes and Exam. The Progress Report is accessed through a link in your HLS software. A copy of the Schedule/Progress Report is shown below. 5
