Introduction to Clinical Psychology (7 th ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Prentice Hall. ISBN: Electronic text available at: Course Description and Objectives: In this course, I will provide an overview of the field of clinical psychology. Course material will include clinical assessment and intervention, psychopathology, academic research, ethical issues, and various clinical specialty areas. We will also discuss career paths to becoming a clinical psychologist and professional issues in clinical psychology. Course Website: This page will be updated with announcements, assignments, due dates, and course materials. Please check the website regularly, as I will hold you responsible for all material posted. (If you experience any problems with this website, please contact the IT services help desk at or get help online at courses.missouri.edu/students/blackboard/index.php) Course Requirements: Exams (400 points) There will be 4 non-cumulative exams given during the semester and a cumulative final. Exams are worth 100 points each and will be a mixture of multiple choice, matching, true/false, and short answer. I will draw exam material from lecture materials and assigned readings. Of the five exams, I will drop your lowest exam score. A missed exam counts as a zero and can be dropped. Because of this policy, I do not give make-up exams under any circumstances. If you miss an exam, you must take the cumulative final to replace the missed exam. Assignments (120 points) Two homework projects will be assigned during the semester, and each will be worth 60 points. Due dates for these assignments are posted on the syllabus schedule. I will post more detailed
2 instructions for each assignment on Blackboard. *Late assignments will have 25% deducted for each day late.* Assignment #1: Summary and critical review of a journal article on the development, evaluation, or dissemination of a clinical assessment or intervention. Assignment #2: Conduct a practice administration of a diagnostic assessment interview, calculate scores, and write a brief summary of the results. Quizzes (120 points) Beginning in the third week of classes, there will be weekly open-note quizzes for you to take on Blackboard. Quizzes are worth 10 points each and will be in multiple choice or short answer formats. You will have until midnight on each Wednesday to take that week s quiz; once you start a quiz, you have 30 minutes to complete it. There will be 14 quizzes in total, but I will only count 12 toward your grade (thus, you can miss two, or drop your lowest two scores if you take every quiz). *You cannot take quizzes late.* Plagiarism Tutorial (10 points) In order to ensure that you understand what constitutes plagiarism, I require all students to complete an online plagiarism tutorial. You will earn 10 points for taking the quiz at the end of the tutorial and ing me the results by midnight on 8/28. Extra credit #2: Summary and discussion of a current news article (i.e., from this semester) relevant to clinical psychology, including critical evaluation of the article s coverage of issues related to clinical psychology.
3 Classroom Policies: Attendance and participation are not required or graded for this course, although I believe they will greatly enhance your learning. If present in class, it is important for students to come prepared to engage with the discussion and contribute when possible. Therefore, I ask that students minimize behaviors that may be disruptive to other students and myself (e.g., talking, texting, doing work for other courses). As part of this policy, I do not allow laptops or other devices with internet access to be used for note-taking in class except as an accommodation approved by the Office of Disability Services (see below). Academic Honesty: Academic integrity is fundamental to the activities and principles of a university. All members of the academic community must be confident that each person's work has been responsibly and honorably acquired, developed, and presented. Any effort to gain an advantage not given to all students is dishonest whether or not the effort is successful. The academic community regards breaches of the academic integrity rules as extremely serious matters. Sanctions for such a breach may include academic sanctions from the instructor, including failing the course for any violation, to disciplinary sanctions ranging from probation to expulsion. In this class, students may make audio or video recordings of course activity unless specifically prohibited by the instructor. However, the redistribution of audio or video recordings of statements or comments from the course to individuals who are not students in the course is prohibited without the express permission of the instructor and of any students who are recorded. Students found to have violated this policy are subject to discipline in accordance with provisions of Section of the Collected Rules and Regulations of the University of Missouri pertaining to student conduct matters.
