Doyle, M.A. Office: Thach 210 Office hours: MW 11:00 AM 12:00 PM or by appointment Course overview/objectives: Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology is both a scientific discipline and an area of professional practice. As a science, I/O Psychology entails the systematic study of organizations and employees using theory-driven research. The goals of this research are to understand the causes and consequences of human behavior at work and to evaluate methods for improving organizational efficiency. As a profession, I/O Psychology entails the application of I/O-related research in order to solve practical problems for client organizations. These problems, in turn, present opportunities for additional research. Thus, the science and practice of I/O psychology go hand-in-hand. As the name implies, I/O Psychology represents the marriage of two related fields: industrial psychology (dealing primarily with practical issues faced by organizations such as how to select, train, evaluate, and compensate employees) and organizational psychology (dealing mostly with social-psychological phenomena unique to the workplace setting, such as employee attitudes, job stress, and leadership). We will devote equal time to these two faces of the field. Over the next semester, my goal is to help you obtain a thorough understanding of I/O Psychology by discussing: o the history and complexities that lie within the field o major I/O theories and research findings o the applications of I/O psychology in organizations o how this material might help you improve your future employment experiences. My teaching philosophy rests on the premise that students acquire and retain more knowledge when they are active participants in their education. Every class period, I strongly encourage you to ask questions and contribute to the course discussion whenever possible. To repeat: you are invited and expected to participate in your education (just watch your language). Textbook: Muchinsky, P. M. (2009). [Please note that the Powerpoint slides posted on Blackboard are merely an outline of what will be covered during lecture]. Details on other available support services can be found in the student handbook. Attendance: COURSE POLICIES Attendance is not required, but strongly encouraged. Some of the material we will cover in class is not available in the textbook or assigned readings. In addition, research indicates that students who attend class more often get higher grades than students who attend class infrequently or not at all. We will have class activities [some unannounced] that will be credited toward your participation grade. In cases when you need to miss a class, you are responsible for obtaining the notes on what you missed from a classmate. I do not provide students with my personal notes or PowerPoint slides. Make-ups: I will provide make-ups for missed Checkpoints and the Mid-Term Exam only make-ups [or extended deadlines] WILL NOT be provided for missed deadlines for Job Analysis Project components. To receive full credit for a missed Checkpoint or the Mid-Term, you must provide a verifiable university-approved excuse (see TigerCub for list of excused absences). Without a valid excuse, you can make-up a Checkpoint with an automatic 10% deduction & the Mid-Term Exam with an automatic 20% deduction. o Students are responsible for scheduling their own make-ups. That is, if you miss a Checkpoint or Mid-Term, it is your responsibility to contact me to schedule a make-up appointment. o Missed make-ups require an additional valid excuse. If you do not have a valid excuse for missing a make-up, you will receive a zero for that exam. No exceptions. o You have one (1) week 5 school days to schedule a make-up. o You have two (2) weeks 10 school days to complete the make-up. o If you know in advance that you will be missing an exam (e.g., if you are a member of a traveling AU-sponsored organization), please notify me immediately to pre-schedule your make-up time. o Absences during the class time provided to work on the job analysis project will likely impact your peer evaluation grade negatively. Academic honesty: I will deal with students who do not comply with AU s academic honor code in the manner specified in the TigerCub manual. Do not give me reason to suspect you of cheating.
3 Entitlement: In recent years, professors have noted that many undergraduates act as though they are entitled to good grades (or merely a passing grade) without investing any effort in their education. In other words, some students believe they deserve the grade simply because they paid tuition. Please do not adopt this position for this course (or any course at AU). You must earn your grade in this course. Note: TigerCub identifies hours of total work per week, including class time, as the appropriate amount of time students should expend per credit assigned to the course. As this is a 3-hour course, I expect you to put forth hours of course-related effort each week. Classroom Etiquette: During our time together, I would like everyone to exchange ideas freely in a mutually respectful and supportive environment. Additionally, research regarding civility has suggested links to numerous beneficial outcomes for yourself and the class as a whole. Therefore, I encourage everyone to adhere to the following guidelines: o Arrive on time. If you must be late, try to minimize disruption (e.g., sit near the door). o Unless you have made other arrangements with me, please stay until we are finished for the day. I will not go over time and may finish early. Do not prepare to leave until we are through. o Please turn off all electronics (e.g., ipod, cell phone, laptop) before the start of the class period. These gadgets are distracting and research indicates they interfere with learning. o Do your best NOT to monopolize class discussion. To contribute insightful commentary is one thing to talk too much, even if your contributions are relevant, is another. o Do not use language that may be offensive to others (If you think it s offensive, it probably is!). o Our class time is for discussing I/O Psychology and related topics. If you wish to sleep or attend to other material (e.g., reading newspaper, studying for another class), you will be asked to leave.
4 ASSIGNMENTS & GRADING Checkpoints: There will be six (6) Checkpoints consisting of a short test. The purpose of these Checkpoints is to assess your understanding and comprehension of the course concepts in smaller sections of material than a traditional test. Checkpoints will cover lecture material as well as material from the textbook that is not covered during lecture. The format for the mini-tests will be vocabulary, multiple-choice, true-false, or fill-in-the-blank, or short answer questions. Checkpoints are scheduled approximately every two weeks, and each Checkpoint is worth 50 points. Mid-Term Exam: There will be a Mid-Term Exam covering all material up until this exam. The Mid-Term exam will consist of multiple choice items and will be worth 100 points. **Please bring a Scantron to the Mid-Term Exam*** Final Exam: There will be a Cumulative Final Exam covering all the material covered during the entire semester. The final exam will consist of multiple-choice items and is worth 200 points. **Please bring a Scantron to the Final Exam*** Job Analysis Group Project: Students will work in groups of 3 to 4 people to complete an abbreviated job analysis and development of structured interview questions. Job Analysis provides the basic information for almost everything that I/O Psychologists do in the course of their work. This project will give students an opportunity to conduct major steps in a job analysis by interviewing a subject matter expert, writing task statements, identifying KSAOs, developing structured interview questions, and writing a final report. The goal of this assignment is for students to apply the course s major concepts and theories to a real-world situation. Students will be asked to work in groups/teams because working in groups or teams is what they will most likely encounter in the workplace, regardless of their chosen profession. Groups final products include a job analysis [with task statements and KSAOs], a brief structured interview, and a written report. The project is worth a total of 200 points. Throughout the semester, there will be various deadlines and due dates: MON, FEB :00 AM Submit job to be studied during project for instructor approval [10 points of final grade] FRI, MARCH 11 10:00 AM Draft of Job Analysis task statements and KSAOs [20 points of final grade] FRI, APRIL 22 AM Final Job Analysis project report from group & peer evaluations from individual group members Students will receive individual grades on the project based on the group s overall final report [80%] and evaluation of your contribution to the project [20%] by the other members of your groups. Further instructions and details will be provided to students on a separate handout and during class time. Also, there will be class periods set aside for students to work on their project with their groups and to get assistance and input from me. Participation: Throughout the semester, there will be various in-class activities. Some of these activities will relate directly to the Job Analysis Project. Other activities will relate to content covered during the class lectures. You will receive credit for participating in the activities. Participation in class activities counts 50 points the total grade for the semester.
5 EXTRA CREDIT Students can earn up to 45 points of extra credit by taking advantage of the following: Participating in Research: Students will earn 5 points for every hour that they participate in psychological research. To sign-up for research opportunities, visit Response Papers: Students can earn up to 15 points (per paper) by providing a Reference and Response Paper, according to the following guidelines: o References for the paper can be from a popular source (e.g., a movie, TV show, Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Dilbert cartoon), and/or from a peer-reviewed journal (e.g., Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology) as long as they pertain to material covered in our assigned readings. Students must provide a digital copy of the Reference (e.g.,.pdf,.doc,.jpeg) as well as an APA citation, if applicable. List of possible movies/tv shows (*remember to check ratings to avoid offensive content) Gattaca (1997) 12 Angry Men (1957) American Chopper Office Space (1999) Waiting (2005) Dirty Jobs Extract (2009) The Corporation (2003) Tabitha's Salon Makeover o Response Papers should summarize how the Reference relates to the course material and/or provide a personal reaction to the reference. For example, if you disagree with an article in the New York Times on the leadership qualities of President Obama, you could reference the article and provide a Response Paper with (a) a summary of the article, including a discussion of relevant leadership theory, (b) an explanation for why you disagree with the author s viewpoint, or (c) both. o Response Papers must be well-written, typed, double-spaced, in Times Roman 12-point font, with 1 margins. Include a separate title page with your name, the topic on which you are writing and the reference source to which you are referring (i.e., APA citations). o Response Papers should not exceed five pages. Students will earn up to 3 points/page, for a maximum of 15 points/response Paper. o Failure to comply by any of these guidelines will result in point deductions.
