Sisson: Hawkes Publishing. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Students enrolled in this course must have a COMPASS ALGEBRA exit score of 37 or higher or an SAT MATH score of 40 or better. The COMPASS ALGEBRA exam, if taken, is the preferred standard for entrance into MATH. Students are expected to purchase a textbook and the accompanying Hawkes software packet. A graphing calculator (TI-3, TI-3 Plus, TI-4, TI-4 Plus) is required for this course. All MATH 1001,, and 12 students are required to visit the Hawkes Lab (Nursing 167) at least once from Wednesday, January 9th to Tuesday, January th. The lab will be available during the following times: am, 2-250pm (except Friday), 5-550pm (except Friday), and 7-750pm (except Friday). Be sure to sign in on the appropriate sheet. Attendance at one of these sessions will count as a free Hawkes computer homework assignment pass to be used only once. If at the end of the semester, the student has not used the free pass, then 5 points will be added to the student s exam average. GRADING POLICY: There will be 5 hourly examinations, each worth 120 points, which will be given throughout the semester. You will also have a number of Homework assignments from your text book that are worth 100 points total, Hawkes computer assignments that are 100 points and a comprehensive Final Exam worth 200 points. Your grade will be calculated according to the following: Unit Exams 5 at 120 points each (600 points total for unit exams) Hawkes computer assignments 100 points Homework/Quizzes/Other 100 points Final Exam 200 points A points B points C points D points F Below 600 points The lowest homework grade will be dropped before figuring a student s final average. Provided that the Final Exam is higher, the grade may be substituted for the lowest score on any of the five

2 hourly exams. The Final Exam for this course will be held Wednesday, May 1, 2013 from 10: am 12: pm. Hawkes: There are two types of homework in this class: selected problems from the book or worksheets and online homework accessible through D2L/Hawkes. The online homework assignments consist of practice problems and quiz (certify) assignments from each section. The book work should be completed first. Next, complete the online practice before completing the certification. Students are expected to complete both the written homework and the online homework. The Hawkes computer work will be due by :00 am on the unit exam day according to the attached schedule. If a student has not certified in each section before the unit exam, the student will be allowed to complete the written exam in class; however, the grade recorded in the grade book for that unit exam will be ZERO. FINAL EXAM: MAY 1, 2013 FROM 10: AM 12: PM Grades & Student Evaluation: Students enrolled in classes in the Division of Science and Mathematics will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of subject matter requiring higher order processing skills. Examination questions may include essay, synthesis, analysis, and application; as well as completion, multiple choice, true/false and matching. Computational skills and drawing or diagramming may also be required. Learning disabilities should be brought to the instructor s attention and arrangements made for special needs the first week of classes. Homework is assigned and collected for a grade and should be used as review for each test. Homework might also be checked through the form of a quiz. Chapter reviews or review sheets may be given from time to time as homework or extra credit at the instructor s discretion. Cell phones, pagers and all other electronic communication devices must be turned OFF during class each day. NO CELL PHONES SHOULD BE SEEN or HEARD!! No hats or other head-gear are allowed during any quiz, test, or exam day. Absences: Students are expected to attend class each session. Attendance will be sent to the registrar along with your final grade. Two tardies count as one absence. Tardies are awarded for arriving after class has begun or leaving before class has ended. A record of your attendance will be kept and sent to the Registrar with your final grade. In order for an absence to be excused, provide documentation such as a doctor s excuse, authorization from the vicepresident, etc. Please submit justifications in writing and I will return my decision to you as soon as is practical. There will be no make-up exams without an excused absence. Make-ups should be scheduled within a week of the test date or the return to school. As a courtesy, please inform the instructor if you will be arriving late or leaving early for a particular class or if you have an emergency which may require you to leave the classroom to answer your phone. Withdrawal & Drop/Add Deadlines: The deadline for Drop/Add is January 9 th, 2013 at 4:30pm. The instructor s signature is required for Drop/Add after this time. Students may withdraw by 430pm on February 27 th and receive a W in the class. Students withdrawing after 4:30pm on February 27 th will be assigned a grade of WF. Students are expected to: - arrive for class with proper tools (text book, notebook, pencil, graphing calculator) - keep personal phone out of sight and on silent during class time (except during emergencies)

3 - refrain from using profanity in class - be in class on time (two tardies count as one absence) - treat faculty in a kind and courteous manner - complete assignments on the assigned date - be attentive and actively participate in class Faculty are expected to: - begin class on time - be prepared for class (text book, markers, calculator, handouts) - treat students in a kind and courteous manner - provide students with a schedule of events - return work in an appropriate amount of time Repercussions - students will be asked to leave class and will be marked absent for the day if: - they arrive in class without proper tools - they are found sleeping, cursing, or engaging in disruptive behavior - they are texting or receiving phone calls during class (except for emergencies) All members of the ABAC community have an obligation to promote an atmosphere in which teaching and learning can take place in an orderly and efficient manner. To maintain this learning environment, individuals must refrain from behavior that disrupts the teaching and learning process. In order to assure the rights of all students to benefit from time spent in class, faculty members have the right and responsibility to excuse from a class session any individual whose behavior disrupts the teaching and learning process. Serious or continued infractions may result in referral of the student for disciplinary action by the student judiciary or appropriate administrative officer. A student will be given a grade of 0 for any in-class assignment (i.e. exam) if he or she is found with a cell phone during the assignment. No cell phones may be used as a calculator for any in-class graded assignment. Using the programming capacities of the TI graphing calculators to store notes or formulas is a severe form of academic dishonesty. Students caught using such programs will be considered in violation of ABAC s Academic Dishonesty Policy. Please refer to for more information and expected learning outcomes.
