2 Summer A MAN 4280 SYLLABUS FACULTY Instructor: Bryan Schaffer Contact Info: Room: LCOB, Room Phone: bschaffer@fgcu.edu Office Hours: Tuesday, 10:00 AM 11:15 AM (also available by appointment) Dr. Bryan Schaffer, Assistant Professor of Management, is new to Florida Gulf Coast University. From 2003 to 2014, he was at the University of North Carolina Asheville as an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Management and Accountancy. His teaching experience is quite extensive and includes courses in Organizational Behavior, Principles of Management, Leadership in Organizations, Ethics and Social Responsibility, Human Resource Management, Teams, and Strategic Management Simulation Lab. Dr. Schaffer received a PhD in Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management from the University of Georgia. His research interests cover an array of topics, such as workplace diversity, leadership and motivation, occupational wellness, and team dynamics. Dr. Schaffer has published in peer reviewed journals and proceedings, and has presented his work at various national academic conferences. He is a member of the Academy of Management, the American Psychological Association, and the Southern Management Association. Prior to his life in academia, Dr. Schaffer held numerous supervisory and management positions with the Pillsbury Company, Avon Products, Inc., and McMaster-Carr Supply Company. 3 COURSE DESCRIPTION MAN Organizational Development & Change - 3 credit(s) Studies organization development as a process of planned change to improve an organization's problem-solving skills and its overall effectiveness within a changing and complex environment, including behavioral effects of power and authority, formal organizations, structural variation, global issues, team and group dynamics, motivation, problem solving, human resource, ethics, and organizational change using problem solving and systems thinking. ~ Senior status required. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, each student should be able to: Describe characteristics of organization development and its historical foundations. Discuss planned change and compare/contrast different models. Diagnose organizational, group, and individual problems and recommend specific interventions. Describe change management in organizations and identify change management methods and techniques. Be able to analyze and synthesize models, theories, concepts and practices and relate it to their own organizational experiences. Required Text: Brown, D. R. (2011). An Experiential Approach to Organizational Development, 8 Edition, ISBN- 13: Recommended Additional Reading Newspapers and journals either take a subscription or access online through the library Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg Business Week and the Economist. 5 Grading Policy: Grades will be based on how well each student performs on written assignments, class presentations, examinations/quizzes, and other assignments. An important dimension of performance includes the demonstration of the knowledge of text materials during class participation and assessments. Grades will be posted on Canvas. Please be aware that make-up quizzes, tests, or exams are typically not given. If you have extenuating circumstances that result in you missing a quiz or a test, you must come see me during office hours (or schedule an appointment) to discuss your situation. Course grades will be assigned based upon the following scale (no round-up): A B C F A B C B C D Grading Categories: Attendance/Participation Team Case Presentation Team Research Project Exam 1 Exam 2 Individual Case Paper Final Exam Total Available 140 points 100 points 150 points 150 points 150 points 140 points 170 points 1000 points Attendance/Participation: Participation is a factor determined by the instructor at the conclusion of the semester and is an overall assessment of each student s: attendance, tardiness, group project involvement, peer reviews, assignments, performance on unannounced quizzes, as well as following classroom and university academic policies. Students are expected to play an active role in the course. Therefore, individual class participation also consists of actively engaging in class discussions. Case Analyses and Presentations: Student teams will be assigned at random by the instructor. Teams will be assigned case studies from the Brown text for class analysis and presentation. For each case, teams should be prepared to discuss and present the case according to the case study methodology reviewed in class with a formal presentation of their findings, solutions and intervention recommendations. On a random basis in each Group Case Study class session, the instructor may ask other teams to present their findings and recommendations for the case. More information will be coming soon regarding the format of these class sessions. I will also post instructions on Canvas. Team Research Project: Student teams will choose a company for study that has gone through a major recent change, turnaround, renewal or transformation. Teams will perform research and analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions chosen for organizational development. The team will also make recommendations as if in the role of external organizational development consultants. Research will culminate in a presentation and the submission of a written report, maximum 2,500 words (this is roughly equivalent to 10 pages, double spaced, 12-point font APA format). Further instructions will follow in class and will be posted on Canvas. 5
6 Exams: There will be two in-class exams on chapters from the Brown text. Format will be multiple-choice and/or short-answer. Individual Case Paper: Students will be required to write an individual paper analyzing a selected case study. This case analysis will culminate in the submission of a written report, maximum 2,500 words (this is roughly equivalent to 10 pages, double spaced, 12-point font APA format). Further instructions will follow in class and will be posted on Canvas. Final Exam: The final exam will consist of 80 multiple-choice questions. 30 of these questions will cover material from this course. 50 questions will cover topics from the following courses: Human Resources Management, Principles of Management, International Business, Ethics, and Team & Group Processes. I will provide more information about this throughout the term. Course Policies: - Each student will be responsible for the following: 1. All materials listed in the text and the syllabus. 2. All readings and/or written assignments. 3. Class participation and attendance. 4. Handing in the assignments at the beginning of class, on the assigned due date, and in the required format. 5. All work assigned in class, whether on the syllabus or not. 6. All information disseminated in class whether in the syllabus or not. 7. All written work submitted must be typed and in 12 point font, double spaced, with correct spelling and grammar and submitted via CANVAS as a Word document. 8. Read the chapters and other assigned materials before coming to class. 9. Please use University for all electronic communications with the Professor. 10. Read all material to be discussed in class prior to class. - Late Work: All papers/assignments should be turned in on the designated due date. Late papers, and papers not in the right format will receive a 5-point deduction if they are turned in one-day late. Each subsequent day will receive an additional 10-point deduction. No exceptions. - Cell Phone/Electronic Devices: Laptops and ipads may be used during class ONLY if being done so for class purposes. The instructor has the right to ask students to discontinue the use of any of these devices in the classroom. - Plagiarism: Plagiarism includes using the work or words of others without proper citations. Copying an assignment from a friend, roommate, etc. is plagiarism. Any plagiarized work will be given a grade of zero (0). - Cheating: Anyone caught cheating will receive an automatic grade of F for the class. - Attendance/Participation Policy: Class participation is a vital component of your learning in this class. You cannot participate if you are not in class. Participation/attendance points are gained for classes in which the student is present and participates effectively; points are lost when the 6
7 student is absent and/or when there is little or no participation. There are no excused versus unexcused absences. Attendance will be taken through a number of methods, including sign-in sheets and my own observations of completed assignments and participation. Leaving class early or arriving to class late will reduce your attendance/participation points. When I do use sign-in sheets, signing-in for anyone other than yourself will be considered cheating, which will result in an automatic F for the class. Academic Policies: Academic Behavior Standards and Academic Dishonesty All students are expected to demonstrate honesty in their academic pursuits. The university policies regarding issues of honesty can be found in the FGCU Student Guidebook under the Student Code of Conduct and Policies and Procedures sections. All students are expected to study this document, which outlines their responsibilities and consequences for violations of the policy.
