Catalog Course Description: MBA capstone experience that requires student teams to analyze and implement solutions to complex organizational problems and opportunities. Students are required to incorporate knowledge acquired in all areas of the MBA program in actual business situations and present their findings in highly professional oral and written formats. Course Overview: Case analysis is used to learn the practical application of the concepts of business strategy in both profit and not for profit situations. Text and Materials: Text: Strategic Management: Concepts. Frank Rothaermel. Articles and cases from Harvard Business Review. These will be printed and distributed. CANVAS: Some course materials and grades will be posted to CANVAS.

2 About me: I spent over 25 years in management at 5 different Fortune 500 companies, the majority of those years as a direct report to the CEO and member of the senior leadership team that set corporate strategic direction. I received my MBA from The Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania. I also have operated my own management consulting company. Student Learning Outcomes: The Lutgert College of Business has established Learning Goals and Learning Outcomes for all graduates of its programs. The EMBA Learning Goals and Learning Outcomes are listed below. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Do the assigned reading before class. Have written answers to the questions presented in the cases prior to their discussion. Participate in class discussions. Complete a Chapter case paper and Team project as described below. Individual Chapter case paper Each Chapter of the textbook contains a short case to illustrate the concepts covered in that chapter. Each student will be assigned one of those case studies and write a paper. The requirement for the paper is to research both the concept and the company in greater detail and analysis, expand and comment on the validity of the illustration. The paper should be approximately 3 pages, double-spaced, 12 point font, one inch margins plus unlimited number of pertinent supporting attachments for exhibits, data, etc. Individual case study paper Five Hole for Food: Entrepreneurial Strategy Apply strategic concepts from the textbook in analyzing and making recommendations on a future direction and emphasis for this organization. The paper should be approximately 4 pages, double-spaced, 12 point font, one inch margins plus unlimited number of pertinent supporting attachments for exhibits, data, etc. Team Final Project & Presentation Each team will develop a strategic review of an industry, including two public firms in that industry listed on a major US exchange. Each team will select a different industry. Team project presentations will be made in the final class on April 25, Presentations should be planned to last one hour to one hour and fifteen minutes in total length including questions. The review will consist of: Industry analysis Current situation analysis of the firms that identifies challenges, goals and current strategies Firm performance review

4 Risks and major issues such as external analysis Analysis of potential future options and strategic choices Recommendations for future business and corporate strategies linked to your strategy analysis A summary roadmap for implementation of your chosen recommendations. Your review should be 12 pages plus unlimited attachments. Instructions are on CANVAS. Participation Full attendance is expected. Please advise me by or in person of the reasons for any absences in advance. Attendance is a fraction of the marks given for participation. It is expected that students actively contribute to classroom discussions. Examples that contribute to a high mark in class participation: Active and interested involvement in classroom discussions Asking for clarification, or debating/questioning ideas on the floor Helpful and effective responses to questions and issues raised in class Contributions that demonstrate good preparation for class and mastery of course material Loss of participation marks include: Lack of preparation for class Regularly arriving late to class or leaving early Consistently failing to be involved in classroom discussions Case analyses represent a major component of this course. Cases allow you to analyze situations, identify challenges, and make recommendations on strategic issues. (1) read the scheduled case & all readings and (2) come prepared with answers to the assigned questions. Each student will receive a participation grade of 0-3 for each of the first 8 classes (24 possible points in total). These grades will be posted on canvas prior to the next class I.
