How to use the Microfilm Reader/Scanner You can print each page directly to the printer on the left of the machine. This printer can only print on one side of the paper. OR, you can scan the entire article and save it as a PDF on your network drive (Alexandria), a disk, CD or flash drive for future reading on a computer or printing at a later date on a printer that can print on both sides of the paper. To scan the entire article and save it as a PDF: 1. Turn on microform machine using the power switch on right side of machine.
2. Turn on the PC and login 3. Make sure you are in the right mode to scan a. Do you see the PC in the window above the Shift and PC/PR keys? i. Hold down the Shift key and PC/PR keys for over one second. You should now see PC 4. Load microfilm or microfiche onto machine a. Microfilm: Pull out the handle in the front of the machine until the glass pops up. Push the reel of film onto the metal piece on the left of the machine. Make sure the reel of film is pushed all the way back onto the metal spindle. Unroll the film from the top of the reel (film always feeds off the top of the reel) and thread the film under the first white knob, under the glass and under the second white knob. Push the end of the film into the take-up reel. b. Microfiche: Pull out the handle in the front of the machine until the glass pops up. Slide the fiche under the glass and push
the handle back into place so that you can see the image on the screen. 5. Use the red and grey buttons to advance and rewind the film. a. Important: For fast forward and fast rewind (<<< or >>>) the handle on the front of the machine has to be pulled out all the way so the glass pops up. 6. Use the blue wheel to zoom and the beige wheel to focus.
7. Prepare the image you want to scan by centering it on the microform machine, adjusting the size using the blue zoom wheel above the lens and focus the image using the beige wheel directly above the lens. 8. Open Adobe Acrobat Pro from the Start menu, Productivity Tools, Adobe Acrobat Pro 9. Click the Create icon in the upper left corner of the screen, select PDF from Scanner and then select Black & White Document The page will automatically begin to scan
10. Move microfilm or microfiche to the next page and follow the Adobe Acrobat Pro prompts to continue scanning additional pages or finish scanning the document 11. When finished, save the document as a PDF to your network drive (Home Directory or Alexandria)
To print each individual page immediately: 1. Turn on microform machine using the power switch on right side of machine. 2. Turn on the printer using the power switch on the left side of the machine. 3. Make sure you are in the right mode to print a. Do you see the number 1 in the window above the Shift and PC/PR keys? i. You are ready to print! b. Do you see PC in the window above the Shift and PC/PR keys? i. Hold down the Shift key and PC/PR keys for over one second. You should now see the number 1. c. Do you see E1 in the window above the Shift and PC/PR keys?
i. Turn on the printer using the power switch on the left side of the machine d. Do you see PE in the window above the Shift and PC/PR keys? i. Check that the printer is on. Check that there is paper in the printer. Change the selected paper tray using the Paper Tray button at the top of the column of buttons on the microfilm reader/scanner. 4. Load microfilm or microfiche onto machine a. Microfilm: Pull out the handle in the front of the machine until the glass pops up. Push the reel of film onto the metal piece on the left of the machine. Make sure the reel of film is pushed all the way back onto the metal spindle.
