Job Description: Cleaner/Caretaker Reports to Liaison with Job Purpose Headteacher/DeputyHeadteacher/School Business Manager School staff and external community To contribute to the smooth running of the School by carrying out a full range of cleaning duties, and a range of site management duties including security and supervision of the site and related equipment, and other caretaking duties including porterage, and maintenance. Principal Accountabilities High levels of cleaning and hygiene throughout the school Security and supervision of the site and key holding Duties The duties of the post as outlined will be subject to the appropriate risk assessment, safe systems of work and appropriate equipment being available and the relevant competencies of the postholder Security and Supervision To act as a key holder, carrying out security procedures for the buildings and grounds. The routine and non-routine opening of premises and grounds. Responding to calls outside normal working hours as a result of break-ins etc. and or/the setting off of the burglar alarm(s), in the absence of the Site Manager. Providing access, where possible, to the premises and classrooms in the event of snow or minor flooding or similar emergency situations. Dealing with enquiries from contractors and, where appropriate, advising the School Business Manager of their presence. Undertaking cleaning of allocated area(s), and secondary cleaning. Cleaning Emptying and washing out dustbins and waste containers Dusting
Polishing or wiping surfaces (tables, desks, shelves, work surfaces etc) Moving furniture so that floors can be cleaned Vacuuming floors and material furniture Sweeping, scrubbing, buffing, polishing or mopping floors as appropriate Cleaning windows and glass door panels Removing chewing gum and graffiti Wiping or washing walls, lockers window ledges, skirting boards, radiators, pipework and furniture etc, as required Straightening the furniture, closing windows, watering plants and leaving the rooms looking tidy Cleaning showers, sinks and washbasins and the surrounding areas Cleaning toilets and urinals, including fixtures and fittings Keeping the cleaners cupboard tidy and clean Looking after the equipment and reporting any faults to the Site Manager To keep all of the cleaning equipment in a clean condition To attend any necessary training relevant to the post Health and Safety Ensure that toilet areas, toilets and sinks are cleaned using the red colour coded equipment. The food preparation areas are cleaned with the green colour coded equipment and all other areas are cleaned with the yellow equipment. Ensure that chemicals are handled, used and stored correctly (follow COSHH assessment forms Ensure that health and safety instructions are followed Ensure that the playground and pathways are gritted and free from snow and ice Monitoring the standards of cleanliness of the premises and furnishings and reporting any deficiencies to the Site Manager/School Business Manager Drawing the attention of the Site Manager/School Business Manager to any repairs or maintenance work required at the premises which is beyond the competence of the caretaking staff.
Carrying out first line repairs and maintenance which are not beyond the scope and capability of the postholder which may include: redecoration as appropriate fencing and boundary repairs, e.g. mending broken fencing panels or stakes, repairing holes in chain link fences etc; Other handyperson duties as required Ensuring that all areas within the site are free from litter and that all drains and gullies are free-flowing and clean. Taking delivery of stores, materials and other goods and conveying them to their points of distribution. Dispatching goods, materials etc. Ensuring that adequate supplies of cleaning materials and other supplies are available. Ensuring that all caretaking and cleaning equipment is in a safe and working condition and arranging for repair as appropriate. Moving furniture and equipment, or any other lifting tasks required by the school Setting up chairs as required for assemblies and whole school events. Carrying out routine checks on areas subject to flooding ensuring that ancillary equipment, e.g., automatic pumps are working Carrying out school based procedures in the event of fire, flood, breaking and entering, accident or major damage.
