They will also take part in activities relating to the audit and continuous improvement of service activity and undertake a basic research and development project Trainees will also put into practice effective study skills, including the use of reflective practice. This unit must be assessed in accordance with requirements for an Apprenticeship Technical Certificate and will include evidence collected from 1. Observation, Questioning, discussion, reflective reporting and application of learning in the workplace within the scope of selected functional category modules for their programme 2. A work based project associated with learning outcome 5 3. Evidence should include the following minimum range for stated assessment criteria; Learning Outcome 1,2,3,4, for basic research projects in working context Learning Outcome 2,5,6 under supervision Learning outcome 5 - work based project

Participate in basic research and development projects to explore innovations in Healthcare Science The learner can: Assessment criteria 1.1 Explain the basic scientific research process from hypothesis to conclusion 1.2 Basic awareness of Caldicott enquiry and confidentiality in R&D 1.3 Describe basic qualitative research methods and evidence based practice methods 1.4 Produce a simple and testable hypothesis 2.1 Follow instructions to carry out research activities methodically 2.2 State the objectives and hypothesis relating to a planned project 2.3 Produce a list of relevant research resources using a recognised protocol for recording them 2.4 Collect and collate the results from a project 2.5 Assist with the analysis of collected data 2.6 Explain the conclusions of the project 3. Understand statistical techniques 3.1 Apply relevant statistical techniques to the analysis of project data 4. Have a basic awareness of how to protect the well-being and rights of the participants inn evidence-based R&D 4.1 Describe the key principles for protection of participants in evidence based research 5. Conduct a review of scientific literature on an agreed topic 5.1 Use appropriate sources and methods for literature search 6. Participate in audit activities in healthcare science 6.1 Understand and apply the principles, procedures and protocols associated with audit within the relevant working context.

Requirements for Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR), required for Apprenticeships, is also included in this module. Trainees will also put into practice effective study skills, including the use of reflective practice. Assessment guidance This unit must be assessed in accordance with requirements for an Apprenticeship Technical Certificate and will include evidence collected from 4. Observation, Questioning, discussion, reflective reporting and application of learning in the workplace within the scope of selected functional category modules for their programme 5. Evidence should include the following minimum range for stated assessment criteria; Learning Outcome 1 reflective diary, discussion and questioning with focus on the working context Learning outcome 2 to include a) Types of risk in healthcare science b) Risk registers, their importance and abuse c) Methods of risk assessment d) Methods of risk control e) Roles and responsibilities in risk management Learning Outcome 3 - in relation to a) Research and development b) Confidentiality and disclosure
4 Page 4 of 12 c) Patient and participant rights d) Patient Focus and Public Involvement Objectives (PFPI) their importance, implementation Learning outcome This should cover the apprentice s rights and responsibilities under the Employment Rights Act 1996, Equality Act 2010 and Health & Safety legislation, together with the responsibilities and duties of employers 4.2 Health & Safety and Equality & Diversity training must be an integral part of the apprentice s learning programme with appropriate assessment methods 4.3 Details of Access to Work and Additional Learning Support must be included in the programme and evidenced through questioning 4.4 To include interaction with other specialists and professions. 4.5 To include potential development routes, transferable skills and opportunities 4.6 To include the relevant representative bodies and where to access relevant information 4.7 To include at least two sources of information 4.8 To include Good Scientific and Good Technical Practice relevant to the MSC Career Pathway and SOPs relevant to role 4.9 To include at least one current issue Learning outcome 5 to include; Confidentiality and Data Protection Equal Opportunities, Diversity and anti-discrimination

Understands ethical considerations in healthcare science 3.1 Describe the key ethical issues and considerations associated with work in Healthcare Science 4. Understand the key responsibilities and functions of personal role 4.1 Know and understand the range of employer and employee Statutory rights and responsibilities under Employment Law 4.2 Know and understand the procedures and documentation in their organisation which recognise and protect their relationship with their employer 4.3 Know and understand the range of sources of information and advice available to them on their employment rights and responsibilities. 4.4 Understand the role played by their occupation within their organisation and industry 4.5 Has an informed view of the types of career pathways that are open to them 4.6 Know the types of representative bodies and understands their relevance to their skill, trade or occupation, and their main roles and responsibilities 4.7 Know where and how to get information and advice on their industry, occupation, training and career 4.8 Describe and work within their organisation s principles of conduct and codes of practice 4.9 Recognise and can form a view on issues of public concern that affect their organisation and industry 5. Work effectively with colleagues and other professionals including inter-agency and multidisciplinary teams. The learner will be able to describe and where appropriate apply key concepts and practice in how to engage and support patients and carers in their healthcare and the importance of doing so. The policy and external requirements relating to collaborative and inter-professional working will be explored in relation to working context. Learning related to requirements for team leadership and their appropriate application in line with the NHS leadership model will also serve to develop skills In this module Trainees will also put into practice effective study skills, including the use of reflective practice. This unit must be assessed in accordance with requirements for an Apprenticeship Technical Certificate and will include evidence collected from 6. Observation, questioning, discussion, reflective reporting and application of learning in the workplace within the scope of selected functional category modules for their programme 7. Evidence should include the following minimum range for stated assessment criteria; Learning Outcome 1 to include contributions to at least two multi-disciplinary team meetings within the working context and reflective diary on this involvement. Learning outcome 2 - to include communication channels: for employing institution; for profession and professional body and for the wider Healthcare Science community Learning outcome 3 - Principles, guidance and law with respect to at least three of the following and related to real work activity Medical Ethics Confidentiality Information Governance Informed Consent

Understand communication channels with/in NHS/HCS for patients and the public 3. Understand principles guidance and law in respect of working practice 4. Understand the interaction of Healthcare Science professions, including cross-division and cross specialism, and how this assists with patent involvement and care 5. Understand the contribution of different service providers / agencies (state, private, informal, voluntary) to collaborative working The learner can: Assessment criteria 1.1 Describe the importance of MDT to patient investigation, treatment and care. 1.2 Contribute to multi-disciplinary team meetings 2.1 Describe the range of communication channels and their appropriate use 3.1 Describe the relevant principles, guidance and law 4.1 Describe importance of interaction across Healthcare Science professions and their contribution to patient involvement and care in line with policy and practice 5.1 Give examples from working practice of contact with other agencies, professions, services with illustration of collaborative working 6. Lead and support a team within healthcare science 6.1 Allocate basic day to day activities to team members 6.2 Monitor and support work of team members 6.3 Respond to requests for support from team members 6.4 Refer issues outside of personal level of authority or competence to appropriate people.

Learners will focus on aspects specific to their work context whilst ensuring that they maintain an overall awareness of the integrated and interactive nature of Healthcare Science and the impact of this work on patient involvement and care in line with policies and practice. Trainees will also put into practice effective study skills, including the use of reflective practice. This unit must be assessed in accordance with requirements for an Apprenticeship Technical Certificate and will include evidence collected from 8. Observation, questioning, discussion, reflective reporting and application of learning in the workplace within the scope of selected functional category modules for their programme 9. Evidence should include the following minimum range for stated assessment criteria; Learning outcome 1 a) Full description of services within own working context b) Illustrative examples of at least 2 related Healthcare Science services Learning outcome 2 protocols and procedures within own working context Learning outcome 3 equipment within own working context Learning outcome 4,5,6 protocol-driven work activities in own working context with reflective review Learning outcome 6,7 including preparation, conduct and completion of investigation.

Understand the development, use and importance of protocols and procedures, how and when these are modified. 3. Know the range and type of equipment used for patient investigation, treatment or management within the working context and its application 4. Understand the importance and application of protocoldriven investigations or activities associated with patient investigation, treatment or management 5. Understand the importance of the correct use of clinical coding and medical terminology in contributing to good healthcare science practice 6. Control infection risks in accordance with departmental protocols 7. Understand the underpinning principles of effective team work and working within and across professional boundaries The learner can: Assessment criteria 1.1 Describe the range of services within the working context and their relevance to investigation, treatment or management of patient disease and disorder 1.2 Describe the link to services available in other healthcare science specialisms that may be involved in on going patient care 2.1 Explain how protocols and procedures are developed, who has development responsibility and requirements to be met for modification 2.2 Use relevant protocols and procedures within work activities associated with patient investigation, treatment or management 3.1 Describe and list key types of equipment relating to work activity, its purpose and correct use 3.2 Explain the limitations of equipment relating to work activity 4.1 Assist with protocol-driven investigations or treatment/management activities 5.1 Complete associated records and documentation, using correct clinical coding and terminology in line with current guidance 6.1 Apply protocols and requirements for hygiene and infection control related to the clinical measurements, including preparation, conduct and completion of investigation or work activity 7.1 Work constructively and effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team

Know principles and practice of health and safety in the workplace 3. Know the regulations and current procedures in place with respect to equipment safety 4. Know protocols and requirements for hygiene and infection control 5. Be aware of the legal framework relevant to informed consent and the application to clinical care, research, audit and teaching 6. Understand errors or potential risks of using defective equipment in clinical practice and the implications of use The learner can: Assessment criteria 1.1 Apply current regulations with respect to service user safety and safe systems within the workplace. 2.1 Work within the requirements of relevant local health and safety guidelines, manuals and other documents including the underpinning legislation 3.1 Use relevant equipment safely and within manufacturer guidelines and in accordance with relevant protocols and operating procedures 4.1 Control infection risks in accordance with departmental protocols 5.1 Comply, where appropriate with requirements for informed consent 6.1 Identify common faults and take appropriate remedial action 6.2 Apply current safety standards to use of equipment
