Relevance f career guidance and livelihd planning In times past, ccupatinal rle allcatin was relatively autmatic and children fllwed in the ftsteps f their parents. Changes unleashed by ecnmic mvements such as the industrial revlutin and tday, glbalizatin, have disrupted this prcess f rle allcatin. The pst industrial labur market, characterised by the frces f glbalisatin and the free market, requires the ability t make skilful educatinal and ccupatinal chices. The service that is expected t address this need has been variusly referred t as career cunselling, career guidance, vcatinal cunselling and vcatinal guidance. The develpment f this field f research and applicatin has remained pr utside the Western cntext. At the mst fundamental level, the meanings f terms such as career, livelihd and vcatin carry deeply cultural cnntatins. Career is ften assciated with what the rich can affrd and is smetimes dismissed as being irrelevant t the needs f the disadvantaged and thse wh are living in pverty. It is essential that career develpment is defined within the multiple realities and paradxes that cmprise the Indian situatin. When understd t mean livelihd r ccupatin r vcatin r in its mst simple sense, a suitable jb, the crsscutting relevance f career develpment t all sectins f the ppulatin becmes immediately evident. Frm this brader perspective, career cunselling culd serve as a tl t supprt yung peple t chse and plan effectively fr a successful career. It is with the intentin f develping human resurce that is capable f engaging with the deeper prcesses that bind wrk, livelihd and career tgether in the develping wrld cntext, that this M.Phil prgramme has been designed by The Prmise Fundatin. 1.2. Academic Partner The Centre fr Career and Persnal Develpment (CCPD) at Canterbury Christ Church University, based in the Faculty f Educatin, Canterbury Christ Church University (UK), is ne f the wrld's leading institutins in the career educatin and guidance sectr. Affiliatin This M.Phil degree is awarded by the Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU), Meghalaya. MLCU was created by Act N. 11 f 2005 f the Legislative Assembly f Meghalaya and received the assent f the Gvernr n July 06, 2005. The Gvernment f Meghalaya issued the Gazette Ntificatin n February 22nd 2006. The creatin f the University is in accrdance with the University Grants Cmmissin Act, 1956 under Sectin 2(f) and the University is empwered t grant degrees under Sectin 22 f the UGC Act. 1.4. Accreditatin Successful candidates will receive accreditatin frm the Indian Assciatin f Career and Livelihd Planning (IACLP). IACLP is a prfessinal assciatin funded with the intentin f creating a fraternity f prfessinals and facilitating the delivery f services, related t career guidance and livelihd planning f the highest quality by cmpetent and recgnized prfessinals. The IACLP is a member f the Internatinal Assciatin f Educatinal and Vcatinal Guidance (IAEVG), which is cmpsed f memberships frm mre than 60 cuntries. Further infrmatin: www.iaclp.rg 2. Abut the Curse 2.1. Curriculum Apprach: Papers: The curse blends thery with practice. Training includes systematic practice under the supervisin f experienced career psychlgists. Significant emphasis is laid n acquiring cmpetencies fr career guidance and cunselling. Papers take an interdisciplinary perspective and include: 1. General Psychlgy: Emphasis n Career Develpment. 2. Career Psychlgy: Emphasis n culture resnant mdels and theries. 3. Basic skills fr cunselling and skills fr career cunselling. 4. Scilgy f Wrk. 5. Labur Market and Career Develpment. 6. Psychlgical Testing. 7. Scial Science Research: Orientatin t basic methds. 8. Career Infrmatin Management. Credits: These 8 papers are f varying weightages and will be ffered in verlapping mdules. Each paper will have a varying credit value depending n the weightage given t the unit in the verall curse structure. The ttal credits add up t 60, where, 15 lecture hurs will carry 1 credit and 30 practical hurs will carry 1 credit. 2.2. Curseware and Resurces Readers: Students will receive a Reader fr each paper. The Reader will be made up f ntes, key papers and references. JIVA Career Cunselling Kit The skill training fr career cunselling is lcated arund the Jiva Kit. This Kit has been prepared as a cmprehensive cmpendium f career develpment resurces required t set up a Career Resurce Centre. Each M Phil student receives a cmplete Jiva Kit which includes the fllwing: Cunsellr Training Manual, Flip Charts, Student Wrksheets, Career Infrmatin Cards, Learning Cards, a set f 20 Careers Dictinaries, Career Resurce Handbk, the Jiva Life Lines Bard, Career Infrmatin Data Manager (a database with career infrmatin). Library All students will have access t a small but ne f the mst cncentrated libraries related t career and livelihd planning. Our cllectin includes ver 600 bks and mre than 5000 reprints and articles frm clse t 44 internatinal jurnals. 2.3. Curse Delivery The curse will be delivered in a mdular manner as fllws: 5 mdules f direct cntact with faculty at The Prmise Fundatin Training Centre in Bangalre. Each mdule will be 10 days lng, nt including weekends. Systematic submissin f curse and field wrk between mdules, as per a pre-prepared schedule, frm the candidate s preferred lcatin, via email. This wuld include the fllwing: Assignments based n readings and curse wrk. Reviews f jurnal articles and bks. Practical assignment submissins based n clearly defined target grups. Develpment f teaching-learning material fr career guidance One f the mdules will be cnducted at the MLCU Campus in Shillng, Meghalaya. 2.4. Teaching and Learning Methds Curse tutrs will emply a cmbinatin f teaching-learning methds, ensuring that the emphasis is n learning rather than teaching: Lectures based n guided readings. Written assignments based n lectures and field experience. Seminars presented by students. Jurnal / bk reviews. Supervised field wrk. Prjects either applied r research riented. An ver all guiding principle wuld be that all teaching-learning interactins aim fr utputs frm students in the frm f any r all f the fllwing: Articles that culd be published. Teaching-Learning Material. Demnstratins f skill / cmpetency as relevant t the mdule being taught. 2.5. Anticipated Curse Outcmes Successful candidates wuld be able t: Deliver career cunselling and livelihd planning services t students and yung peple. frm varied backgrunds, thrugh ne-t-ne sessins and grup wrkshps. Establish career resurce centers. Establish departments f career guidance and livelihd planning. Teach career guidance and livelihd planning at the pst graduate level. 2.6. Assessment fr award f degree The student will be assessed alng tw parameters: Cmpletin f papers: The student is expected t successfully cmplete all 8 papers, as described in Sectin 2.1 abve. These curses will be assessed thrugh methds as relevant t the particular subject matter. This wuld include the fllwing: Grading f assignments. Grading f prjects. Grading f essays. Written examinatin Assessment f skills fr individual cunselling. Assessment f skills fr grup cunselling. Assessment f skills fr teaching. Assessment f skills fr accessing, managing and transmitting careers infrmatin. Prtfli The traditinally expected final utput frm an M.Phil is a thesis. Students f this curse will draw the varius inputs tgether t prduce a Prtfli f their experiences and learnings. This prtfli will be cmpiled ver the curse f the M.Phil prgramme. The prtfli will be based n a particular theme selected by the student in cnsultatin with his/her supervisr. Faculty Giden Arulmani, Ph.D Giden, is a clinical psychlgist with an M.Phil in Medical and Scial Psychlgy frm the Natinal Institute fr Mental Health and Neur Sciences (India) and a dctral degree in Career Psychlgy frm the University f Prtsmuth (UK). He als hlds an advanced diplma in Cunselling and a diplma in Philsphy and Thelgy. He is the Funder and Managing Trustee f The Prmise Fundatin, headquarted in Bangalre, India. Papers and mdules: Giden is the Directr f this prgramme. He will lead the papers n Career Psychlgy and Skills fr Career Cunselling. Anita Ratnam Papers and mdules: Anita will lead the paper n the Scilgy f Wrk. Anita hlds a Master f Arts degree in Develpment Studies, frm the University f East Anglia, UK and has specialised in Rural Management frm the Institute f Rural Management Anand, India. She is a specialist in Institutin Leadership, Develpment and Gvernance, Training Design, Curriculum Develpment and Facilitatin. She has evaluated a wide variety f NGOs fr the impact f their prgrammes and rganisatinal prcesses. Anita has guided varius research prjects including a study f the linkages between Call Centres and Experiences f Yuth-hd, dcumentatin f dying sprts and indigenus games in Rural Bangalre, Situatin f Textile Artisans in different parts f India and presented this as a pht-exhibitin and guided students research int land sales in the wake f liberalisatin, and the situatin f wrkers in the flriculture units arund Bangalre. Samvada, the rganizatin she funded wrks with cllege students and yuth t sensitize them t issues relating t caste, cmmunalism, gender, envirnment and pverty. Anita led a highly successful sympsium at the Jiva-IAEVG Internatinal Career Guidance cnference held in Bangalre in 2010 which fr the first time brught the issues that surrund livelihd planning nt an internatinal platfrm. She has subsequently represented India at ther internatinal cnferences n career guidance, where her ideas have been much appreciated. Sachin Kumar Papers and mdules: Sachin will lead the paper n Labur Market and teach mdules in the paper n Career Infrmatin Management. Sachin hlds an M.Phil in Cunselling Psychlgy specializing in Career Cunselling and Livelihd Planning, and a Pstgraduate Diplma in Training and Develpment. Earlier assciated with The Prmise Fundatin, Bangalre as a cre team member and Master Career Cunsellr Trainer, he is currently wrking as an Assistant Prfessr in a Gvernment Cllege in Chamba district f Himachal Pradesh. She has published widely and presents papers at natinal and internatinal cnferences. She is invlved in Eurpean prjects related t the wrk f career guidance practitiners. Her previus research was cncerned with the meanings given t the functin f supervisin within guidance and yuth supprt wrk. Currently she is explring the develpment f cnstructivist appraches fr career guidance and cunselling. Hazel is a Fellw f the Academy f Higher Educatin and a funding member f the newly frmed Eurpean Sciety fr Vcatinal Designing and Career Cunselling. Bakshi, PhD Anuradha is a develpmental psychlgist and Assciate Prfessr at the Nirmala Niketan Cllege f Hme Science, ne f the mst well-knwn wmen s educatin institutins in India, affiliated t the University f Mumbai. She has cmpleted her PhD frm the University f Tennessee at Knxville, USA, and her master s degree frm the Maharaja Sayajira University f Barda, India.
