ETON COLLEGE CHEF VACANCY General Background Eton College, which was founded by Henry VI in 1440 for 70 scholars, has over the years become a boarding school catering for 1300 boys. It is the largest boarding school for boys in the UK. Eton s academic results are excellent. A very wide range of sports, activities and societies is offered and the demand for places at the School is strong. A total of about 800 people work at Eton and in addition to the teachers there are staff working in the 25 Boarding Houses, central dining facility, grounds, security, buildings and others work as swimming pool attendants, technicians, and administrative staff. The School and its immediate grounds and playing fields extend over 400 acres from the north end of Eton High Street to the M4 by Slough. There are some 400 school buildings including staff accommodation and a 2,000 metre rowing lake at Dorney, designated as the London 2012 Olympic venue for rowing and flat-water canoeing. Job Vacancy We have an exciting opportunity for a LIVE IN CHEF who plays a vital role in the Boarding House. We are looking for an experienced person who can provide excellent dining for the House. The duties and criteria required for this position are set out in the Job Description. The post is working in the one of our Boarding Houses and will be live in. The annual salary is 19,260 per annum for 40 hours per week (3 split shifts per week including some weekends). The paid holiday leave detailed below, and the working year comprises 37 weeks made up of term time and 3 additional days before the boys start back at the beginning of each term. Salary is paid monthly via BACS. This rate of pay takes full account of the paid holiday provisions described. Holidays Four weeks paid statutory holiday per annum, plus Bank Holidays which are also paid. When a Bank Holiday falls during a School term there is a requirement to work on that day which is already included in the salary. You are required to take your paid holidays (including any additional days in lieu) during the school holidays, excluding the three days before the start and end of term. Benefits Pension scheme

Employees who wish to be enrolled into the College s Group Personal Pension Plan can choose either to contribute 4.9% of their salary and the College will contribute 11% or to join the auto-enrolment category where they will currently pay 1% and the College pays 1%. These auto-enrolment amounts will increase gradually over the next few years in line with Government requirements. Death in service benefits This is currently 4 x basic salary. Sports and Leisure Facilities Employees at the College enjoy free use of the College Gym, swimming pool and tennis courts with subsidised use of other sport facilities, together with free use of the School Library, and free entry to College theatre and concert productions. JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: LINE MANAGER: CHEF DAME MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB: To create nutritious meals for the boys, House Master, Dame and staff in the Boarding House plus provide fine dining for the House functions/events when required. You will have some contact with the boys and in addition to your job role will be able to take an interest in the activities of the house such as sports, plays and musical productions. CONTACT: Some contact with boys, local tradesmen. PRINCIPAL DUTIES: In consultation with the Dame, prepare menus and maintain supplies to enable meals to be cooked for approximately 50 boys, House Master and family (where applicable), Dame and House staff. Supervision of kitchen staff. Prepare special menus if required, packed lunches, teas for games. Cook for Private Side dinner parties and other House functions in consultation with House Master s wife if applicable. Ensure that the kitchen is kept to the standard of cleanliness required by statutory regulations. Order food supplies if required to do so by the Dame. You will be required to attend all training sessions and meetings that might be necessary for you carry out your professional duties, including pastoral and Health and Safety matters. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Relevant NVQ catering qualification and/or experience in similar role. The role plays a vital role in the Boarding House, so we are looking for an experienced and qualified Chef to provide meals for the Housemaster and family provide catering for House functions and Chambers food for the boys. The rate of pay for this post is 8.68 per hour taking into account the paid holiday leave detailed below, and the working year comprises 35 weeks made up of term time and 3 additional days before the boys start back at the beginning of each term, and after they leave at the end of each term. The details for this vacancy are as follows: The salary is 14,089 per annum for 40 hours per week including split shifts and some weekend work. The successful candidate will be working 6 days per week covering the initial core hours and possibly up to 5 evenings per week. Salaries are paid monthly via BACS. The rates of pay take full account of the paid holiday provisions described below. Holidays Four weeks paid statutory holiday per annum, plus Bank Holidays which are also paid. When a Bank Holiday falls during a School term there is a requirement to work on that day with an additional day s paid holiday in lieu.

Your full statutory holiday entitlement is required to be taken (including any additional days in lieu) during periods when the school is closed out of term time, (excluding the three days before the start and end of each term which will be working days). JOB DESCRIPTION HOUSE CHEF/COOK JOB PURPOSE To provide meals for the Housemaster and his family, house hospitality that involves cooking formal lunch and dinner parties, society dinners, soc suppers, house bbq s, bloc suppers for both parents and boys, beginning and end of year events and the provision of Chambers food for the boy s each day. You will have some contact with the boys and in addition to your job role will be able to take an interest in the activities of the house such as sports, plays and musical productions. You will be required to work during the term time only with the exception of three days at the beginning and end of each term; you will also work any bank holidays that fall within term time. Duties and Responsibilities Plan menus in consultation with the Housemaster or his wife (if applicable) and Dame. Produce fresh Chambers food for the boy s. To produce as many dishes as possible from using fresh ingredients. To use tried and tested recipes. To display a good understanding of quantities when producing for both large scale and hospitality numbers. To demonstrate a thorough understanding of all kitchen equipment. To prepare food as per menu and include any special dietary requirements. To ensure that all food is presented to the highest standard. To cover duties when necessary, to include sick cover at short notice at any of the college catering areas. To demonstrate a positive working style with an enthusiastic, committed and flexible attitude. To work in compliance with the Health & Safety Policy To correctly complete and use cleaning schedules to ensure that the kitchen and ancillary areas are kept to a very high standard of cleanliness. To seek and be aware of your duties within the two boarding houses ensuring there is a good line of communication. To undertake regular training as given to keep up to date with both legislative, catering trends and innovation.

Finance To work as instructed to ensure the house operates at maximum efficiency within budgetary targets to deliver the required level of service at all times. To be aware of food stock levels and bring to the attention of the Dame, if stock is running low. General communication of food stocks should be addressed at weekly staff meeting. Legislative To complete as instructed and be trained in the correct and safe operation of all kitchen equipment and chemicals. To undertake food production in line with legal requirements, Eton College Food Safety Policy and relation to HACCP. To assist in keeping records including fridge /freezer temperatures, hot and cold food holding temperatures and all other Food and Health Safety documents required by law. Flexibility You may be required to complete some of your contracted hours in other catering facilities within Eton College. This could be at short notice as the need arises. Time Keeping Complete timesheets accurately. To carry out any other duties commensurate with the post as may be reasonably required by the line manager. ATTRIBUTES ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION Relevant NVQ Level 2 or equivalent Level 2 Food Safety in Catering or equivalent. SPECIALIST SKILLS & EXPERIENCE Has previous experience of working as a Chef. Relevant NVQ Level 3 or equivalent. CIEH Level 3 Educated to GCSE with passes in English and Math s or ability to show standards of literacy & numeracy in line with GCSE equivalent. Manual Handling qualification A basic COSHH award Dietary and allergy knowledge/ experience PERSONAL QUALITIES Ability to prioritise and organise own workload. Flexible, prepared to respond to requests at short notice. A team player Ability to work calmly whilst under pressure, in order to meet deadlines.
