Campus Life Our vibrant campus means that Perth College UHI is a popular choice for local, national and international students alike. Facilities We have state-of-the-art and industry-standard facilities to support your learning and equip you with the skills for your chosen career. You will have access to a world of learning resources. Our purpose-built library houses more than 30,000 books and offers thousands of journal and e-book titles in a range of formats. You can use our IT suite, borrow a laptop, print your work and connect to a wireless network using your own laptop. We have an International Centre and Language School to support our international students. Accommodation The Perth College UHI residences, built in 2010, provide modern and secure accommodation in shared or single rooms, with spacious kitchen/dining and lounge areas. All rooms have private en-suite facilities, a study area and free access to the internet and College network. Alternative accommodation in Perth is also available within private flats or with our host families.

09 Business and Accounting We offer a wide range of levels and subject areas within business, administration and accounting from national certificate to degree and professional qualifications. Many of our courses include practical aspects, including work experience, which helps improve our students employability skills. Some of our programmes also include the opportunity to study abroad. NC Administration People with good skills in administration are always in demand and this course provides an excellent introduction to a career in administration. HNC/D Accounting Every business and organisation has to manage its finances efficiently to make the best use of their resources, so people with the right training are always in demand. At Perth College UHI we can provide you with the underpinning knowledge and understanding required to succeed in this ever-changing field. Networks grow and develop. The software and hardware required to keep them going are constantly being upgraded, so to succeed in today s job market it s essential that you are IT literate. You can study from National Certificate (NC) to Higher National Certificate or Diploma (HNC or HND) through to the Bachelor of Science (BSc). Whether you wish to start learning or develop existing IT skills, or you re just looking for qualifications to help with a career change, our computing courses can help you get there. NC Digital Media Computing Every organisation uses software and hardware to solve problems and perform tasks more efficiently, so if you want to improve your career prospects, a good level of computing skills is essential. This introductory course is suitable for all types of people regardless of qualifications, age or work experience and will allow you to gain practical skills and a formal qualification in digital media computing. You will learn multimedia creation, basic games design, software development/programming and hardware installation and maintenance. You will also have the opportunity to gain a National Progression Award (NPA) in Web Design Fundamentals, a NPA in Computer Networks and Systems as well as completing the NQ in Computer Technologies. HNC/D Computing National research suggests that the need for systems and support staff will grow, with database and web skills also being in strong demand. This HNC/D programme will prepare you for a career in the IT industry, where there is still a substantial skills shortage in the UK. HNC Computing Applications Development or HND Mobile Applications Computing Science These courses offer an excellent opportunity to gain relevant employment in the computing industry or to further study. We offer two themed HNC programmes which will allow you to experience specific areas in computing. Students will follow the same programme throughout the year but will specialise in semester 2. The areas of specialism will allow the student to investigate mobile technologies (Android applications) or gain skills in developing applications using VBA (Visual Basic Applications). These optional units are subject to sufficient student enrolments. BSc/BSc (Hons) Computing This course will prepare you for a career in computing, particularly in the areas of database theory, web and mobile design, computer forensics, web science and artificial intelligence. It has been designed to produce skilled graduates with the knowledge and experience needed to find work in more responsible technical and professional posts. Learning will be through a variety of different modes of delivery including online and face-to-face teaching. In both years you will study a variety of subjects which are geared towards the ever-changing IT and computing job market. Your final project could involve you working with real clients developing a wide variety of systems including intranet applications, e-commerce websites and occasionally network designs. MSc Computing Science and Web Technologies This course has been designed for international students and is aimed at employees hoping to gain a recognised qualification through CPD. 19 Aircraft Engineering The aerospace industry requires high-calibre engineers at every stage of the product lifecycle, from conceptual design through to in-service support. With a predicted growth in the sector, Perth College UHI can help you meet the need for engineers of the future. Perth College UHI Aircraft Engineering courses offer a range of academic qualifications, all the way from National Certificate to Honours degree, and up to Masters. Our staff possess specialist knowledge across the breadth of aeronautical disciplines, coming from industry, academia and the armed forces. Perth College UHI s BEng and BEng (Hons) have been accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society. NC Engineering Systems An excellent foundation for a career in the aviation industry. You will develop the skills and knowledge required in the field of aeronautical engineering, as well as other engineering skills relevant to modern technicians or engineers within a wide range of technology-related industries. HNC Aircraft Engineering This course represents the 1st year of the BEng programme in Aircraft Engineering while also providing successful students with an industry recognised qualification. It provides a syllabus that is closely aligned to associated aspects of the EASA Part 66 knowledge and skills requirement for the certifying aircraft mechanic. As well as a broad foundation in engineering science, mathematics and aeronautical engineering subjects, you will also learn practical skills in an aircraft hangar workshop environment. Dip HE Aircraft Engineering This 2nd year of the BEng programme provides a recognised qualification at Engineering Technician (Eng Tech.) level. The Dip HE provides further specialist aeronautical engineering topics, again embracing additional aspects of the EASA Part 66 syllabus and providing more practical aircraft maintenance skills development, including inspection and testing. You study broader aspects of the requirements for aircraft engineers, such as mechanical, electrical and avionics systems, business and management. You will continue to build engineering and mathematics knowledge in an aeronautical context. BEng Aircraft Engineering This course represents the 3rd year of the BEng undergraduate programme and provides successful students with a recognised qualification at Incorporated Engineer (IEng) level at the end of this stage. It can lead to options in air transport operations or design. Building on the learning experience of the Dip HE in Aircraft Engineering, Year 3 further develops knowledge and skills across a mandatory core of aeronautical disciplines such as aerodynamics, avionics, propulsion, structures, business and management using a systems approach which will stand a student in good stead irrespective of which branch of aviation their career takes them. In semester 2 of this year, electives are available to allow students to give their engineering development a bias toward careers in the aircraft operations industry or the aircraft design industry. Throughout this year, students continue to develop their personal and career portfolio and hone their job-seeking skills. BEng (Hons) Aircraft Engineering This course represents the 4th year of the BEng undergraduate programme and provides successful students with a recognised Honours qualification. It offers options in air transport or design. Building on the learning experience of the BEng in Aircraft Engineering, Year 4 develops knowledge and skills to a more complex level across a mandatory core of aeronautical disciplines such as avionics, airframe systems, aircraft propulsion and project management. 21 Automotive Engineering The automotive sector has a wide variety of career opportunities; ranging from research and design, through to manufacturing, sales, maintenance and repair all of which require specialist knowledge and skills. The Automotive Engineering Department at Perth College UHI offers challenging and rewarding opportunities for individuals wishing to pursue a career in the automotive service and repair industry. We offer a range of VRQ (Vocationally Related Qualifications) courses aimed at developing the core practical skills, theoretical knowledge and employability skills for those wishing to embark on a career. The courses on offer are grouped into two distinct areas: Automotive Mechanical and Automotive Body and Painting, both of which can be followed on a full-time programme or block release through an apprenticeship scheme. BSc/BSc (Hons) Psychology A combination of modules are offered which are equally balanced between different areas or domains, covering skills and methodologies that provide a broad approach to the study of psychology. The course is available full-time or part-time. BA/BA (Hons) Scottish History This degree looks at Scottish history within a northern European and northern Atlantic perspective, focusing on the cultural, political, social and economic links between Scotland and these regions. Specific modules focusing on the history of the distinctive Highlands and Islands region will also be offered. A range of modules will examine specific aspects of historical discipline such as gender history and demographic history within a comparative and/or Scottish setting. BA/BA (Hons) Social Sciences The social scientist gathers evidence and evaluates it to come to valid, scientific conclusions. Problem solving, analytical skills, group working and a high level of competence in communication skills are developed, all of which are highly valued by employers. You will look at themes, methods and subjects and increase your knowledge of people and society. BA (Hons) Sociology and Politics (subject to approval) This course will suit those who are interested in the social and political world and who care about important social and political issues in society, such as poverty, crime, terror and freedom. You will have the opportunity to look at a range of themes, methods and subjects and increase your knowledge of people, politics and society. You can also study this course on a part-time basis which will take longer. Mountain Studies 45 The Centre for Mountain Studies (CMS) was established in 2000, and is recognised globally as a centre of excellence on sustainable development in mountain regions. The CMS offers a unique, online MSc in Sustainable Mountain Development. The Centre s Director is Professor Martin Price, who shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on climate change. Sustainable Mountain Development Pg Cert/Pg Dip/MSc This Masters course comprises six modules and a dissertation. It is a part-time, on-line, interdisciplinary course created for those with an interest in mountain environments, their people, and their future. The course recognises the growing international attention being given to mountain regions, and is taught by experts from across the UHI network. It aims to meet the needs of mountain communities by bringing together professional skills with economic, social and environmental knowledge, to offer a qualification for practitioners and agency officials working in mountain areas. Language School 47 English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Perth College UHI Language School has been providing General English tuition for over 30 years and has British Council accreditation. For our full-time General English language course, we test students at the beginning and then monitor them to ensure they are at the correct level. Our ESOL classes are taken by qualified and experienced ESOL teachers and are designed to improve all aspects of students English communication skills, grammar and vocabulary. We aim to help you learn the language you need for work, study, participation in UK life, and international communication. Our integrated approach encourages the use of grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and social expressions in context and provides you with the chance to use and understand English in real-life tasks. 49 New Opportunities Not everyone knows what they want to study when they leave school, and some may need a little more support to be able to follow their chosen career path. New Opportunities offers full-time courses which are designed to help young people progress successfully from school or unemployment to further learning. Part-time courses for young people and adults are also available and include: Adult Literacy; Connect in partnership with Perth Association for Mental Health; Princes Trust and Asdan. Moving On Moving On could be the right course for you if you are facing a challenging transition and would benefit from learning in a small supported group. The course is about taking responsibility for your own learning and supporting you to become a confident individual. Next Steps 2 Learning If you are unsure about what route to follow, the Next Steps to Learning course is ideal for young people who have just left school, are Christmas leavers, or who have been unemployed for a while. 51 Social and Vocational Studies Whether you re looking to come to College to gain a qualification, develop personal, social or work-related skills, you can build your confidence by trying a variety of creative and work related subjects in the Social and Vocational Studies department. Our courses have been designed to provide individual programmes of study within a supported learning environment for young people and adults who would benefit from building their confidence, skills and independence. Stepping In, New Skills and Stepping Out offer different options for different learners, but are all delivered by dedicated staff in a stimulating and exciting learning environment. Stepping In This programme aims to help young people and adults undertake bite-sized learning activities to develop personal and practical skills, self-awareness and confidence in expressing their views and opinions. It is designed for individuals who want to develop vocational and life skills and gain credit and qualifications to support their learning experience. Depending on individual requirements, the course allows students to attend their chosen sessions on a part-time basis. New Skills New Skills is aimed at young people and adults who would like specialist learning and teaching opportunities to develop their personal, social and work-related skills for independent living or for future study. In this flexible and practical course, you will work in groups to try out a range of subjects and achieve personal learning goals. The support we provide means it is particularly suitable for people with additional support needs. You will attend College three to four days a week and study a range of qualifications and awards, including SQA units and ASDAN Awards. We also run regular events with other local colleges, providing social, recreational and sporting opportunities. Stepping Out This programme offers a supported transition into further education, training or work opportunities for young people and adults. It has been designed to prepare students for a working environment (voluntary work, supported employment or open employment) and is ideal for those who would benefit from building their confidence and skills through extended guidance and support. Most of our students come to us from other Social and Vocational Studies courses, but some come to College specifically to prepare for further training or employability skills.
