Background Information About us Fawcett is the UK s leading campaigning organisation for women s equality and rights at home, at work and in public life. Since our founder s successful parliamentary campaign for the women s vote we have continued to keep women s rights on the political agenda and in the public eye. Today we are the UK s largest independent membership organisation with a dedicated focus on advancing women s equality and rights in modern Britain. We boast a large national member base as well as a formidable network of supporters and allies within politics, business, the media, academia and the professions. We effect change by combining direct lobbying within the political system with campaigns that increase and demonstrate public support for action. We use independent research and evidence to better understand key issues and generate reports, lobbying tools and media coverage that both increase awareness and put pressure on decision makers to act. A lot of what we do involves working with our supporters, through online networks, local activities and more. This means campaigners around the country can get involved and we can showcase the support our campaigns have. We also work with other leading thinkers to not just make the case for greater gender equality, but to develop new ideas on how to get there. Our Vision and Beliefs Our vision is of a society where women and men are equally valued and respected, and have equal power and influence in shaping our own lives and the wider world. We believe that as a society we will be stronger, healthier and happier when all people women and men enjoy full equality and respect. However there are still many inequalities remaining between different groups; one of the largest is that between women and men. This is not just expressed in differences between women s and men s power and influence, but also in what women earn and own, their education, the type of crime women experience and the justice they get, and how they are represented and treated in our culture and media. This is bad for women, our families, communities and society. To make a difference change is needed on four key fronts - none of which will deliver without the others. Firstly, we must ensure that the laws and policies that shape our everyday lives do not undermine, but rather advance equality and women s rights. Second, we need to ensure that everyday practice - from government, businesses and civil society - follows suit, not just because of the law but because it is the right and the most effective thing to do. Thirdly, greater awareness of the remaining inequalities that women face and galvanising support for change is key. Fourthly, it is crucial that women are involved at the centre of driving through and delivering this change. We believe that whilst our elected government should have a central and leading role, real progress must also involve a wide range of other agents of change in our society including businesses, the media, NGO s, educationalists, voluntary organisations and individuals both women and men.
Our Mission We work towards our vision by: Influencing changes to policy and legislation Promoting and supporting better implementation of policy and legislation Raising awareness of the continuing inequality gap between women and men and promoting positive attitudes and beliefs about progressing women s equality Increasing women s power and influence in decision-making Our Activities Monitoring and researching barriers and opportunities to realising women s equality and developing/supporting policy and practical solutions to these Producing resources and information that support decision makers and our supporters in affecting change Lobbying national government, parliament and political parties, and where appropriate the EU and UN Delivering and mobilising public-facing campaigns Facilitating debate, collaboration and the development of ideas through meetings, events, publications and online forums Our Database The Fawcett Society CRM system is a ThankQ database of approximately 35,000 records. The records comprise our members (approximately 2,300), supporters, donors/funders, communication contacts, local group information, and other key stakeholders. The database is used to support membership servicing, income generation and campaigning. It is vital to tracking and communicating with our membership. With plans for significant membership growth over the next several years, it is vital that the database is accurate and up to date.
