What is a Charter School? Charter schools are public schools, which are privately governed by a non-profit Board, but receive taxpayer money from the State School plan and procedures are approved by North Carolina State Board of Education and North Carolina Office of Charter Schools Provides more flexibility in teacher certification and programming Must offer innovative and unique themes in education to increase students achievement A choice for parents in the education of their children. Open enrollment, no tuition. 2

TMSA Mission and Focus The focus of Triad Math and Science Academy is to provide research-based science, math, and technology education to: prepare its students for challenging careers and higher education, especially in scientific fields; help students to be able to compete in the global economy; create scientifically literate leadership potential using rigorous proven programs recognized by the US Department of Education, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). 4

What is unique with TMSA? Research-based curriculum that has been proven through extensive field studies across the nation that it has improved student learning and has been found appropriate for all student populations including students who are at risk of academic failure and academically gifted. TMSA offers free after-school and weekend tutoring programs for students especially who are at risk of academic failure and need extra help to pass their classes. TMSA also prepares interested students for regional, statewide, national, and international competitions. TMSA faculty utilizes current best practices in their teaching to improve student learning in all areas. 8

Instructional Program Instructional program aligned with North Carolina Standard Course of Study as well as with nationally recognized standards such as National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards and National Science Education Standards. CMP and CPM are identified as Exemplary math programs by the Department of Education. CMP ranked highest by The American Association for the Advancement of Science, stating that it contains both in-depth mathematics content and excellent instructional support. GWM is identified as one of 10 promising math programs by the Department of Education Expert Panel out of 61. STC developed by the National Science Resources Center (NSRC), a nonprofit organization jointly operated by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and Institute of Medicine 9
