1 Cyprus High School As a 12 th grade student, you are almost ready to graduate! It s time to review your first three years and make sure you are online to graduate and prepared for college and/or a career after this year! Students are assigned counselors by last name. Students can come to the counseling center during noninstructional time. If their counselor is unavailable, students will schedule a time with the secretary. Parents can see their student s counselor by calling to schedule an appointment. You can call the counseling center at You can also schedule an appointment online at Please note that counselors are frequently scheduled to teach guidance lessons in classrooms. To ensure you have the opportunity to speak with your student s counselor, it is best to call ahead and make an appointment. How to Get Help! If you are struggling in classes don t hesitate to get help! All teachers are available at various times before, during, and/or after school. We encourage ALL STUDENTS who need extra support to take advantage of these supports. After School Tutoring Students may attend after school tutoring Monday through Thursday from 2:15-3:30. It is free. This is a great opportunity to get help with your math homework or writing assignment. Pirate Hour Enrichment The schedule has a built in student enrichment time daily. Students will attend the first 25 minutes after second period OR the final 25 minutes before third period for students who are current on all learning expectations. This will be the opportunity to participate in intramurals, participate in the arts, or more. Tardy School Did you get to class late? At Cyprus, all students are fined for being late to class. Tardy school will be provided during Pirate Hour and after school to help pay off any tardy fines. We recommend avoiding tardies instead of dealing with the consequences. Credit Recovery Fail a class? It s not too late to demonstrate competency. Credit Recovery is an after school program (and possible class for seniors) to help students make up missing credit needed to graduate. Remember, it s always the easier and better choice to get the credit the first time. Pirate Hour Supports The schedule has a built in student support time daily. Students will be assigned to attend the first 25 minutes after second period OR the final 25 minutes before third period. This will be the opportunity to learn a missed standard or skill, re-take a test, or get help on homework. This is not a punishment, but rather an opportunity to help all students succeed. Truancy School Miss a class? At Cyprus, all students are fined $5 per unexcused absence (per period). Truancy school will be provided during Pirate Hour and after school to help pay off any truancy fines. Going to school is essential to your future and it is the law! Parents need to make sure legitimate absences are excused in a timely manner. Check Gradebook Become familiar with Gradebook to check your grades/attendance regularly (username and password can be set up through the parent portal through the school website or the school app). Checking your grades and assignments is a great way to be proactive about your grades. - Go to - Click on Parent Portal on the right hand side - Enter your username and password
2 Twelfth Grade Student Intervention and Support Courses We understand that students learn at different rates. We also understand that students are smart in different ways. Because of this, many students require additional supports and interventions to succeed in this system. Recognizing that additional supports are a proactive and positive way to help some students succeed, parents and students are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities. AP Courses: Cyprus High School offers many AP courses in Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Music, and Spanish. While these courses are rigorous and challenging, they will definitely prepare students for college. AP Independent Study: This class is for students who have multiple AP classes to meet and study for the rigorous expectations of their schedule. Concurrent Enrollment Courses: Cyprus High School offers many Concurrent Enrollment courses in various areas. While these courses are rigorous and challenging, they will prepare students for college. GTI Career Courses: Cyprus High offers many courses through their GTI extension. Many of these courses offer concurrent enrollment options. All of them are part of the pathways to meaningful careers. Latinos in Action (LIA): This course requires an application, but is for our Latino students to help prepare for college. It includes visits to college, tutoring elementary students, and more. People of the Pacific (POP): This course for our Pacific Islander students to help prepare for college. It includes visits to college, service, and more. Spanish for Spanish Speakers: This course allows our native Spanish speakers to have a class in Spanish to support their language growth. Research shows that people who are fully literate in their original language learn other languages easier. Credit Recovery: This class is open to seniors first, but if space permits juniors can access this class to work on credit recovery. There are strict expectations of students to remain in this class. Peer Tutor: This class is for students who want to work in specific classes as a peer tutor. Great at math and want a period to help other Pirates succeed in math? This is for you. There are many subjects where student experts can give back to Cyprus. You will receive elective credit AND service hours for this class. NOTE: Seniors may not take multiple home release courses unless they are approved and tied to work release. If students have all of the credits needed to graduate, they must graduate early or take additional courses to prepare for college or careers. Seniors on line to graduate may take one period of home release during first or fourth period only.
3 Cyprus Four Campuses Cyprus High School Main Campus The main campus of Cyprus High School will offer many options for all Cyprus students. It will house the core (math, English, science, social studies) classes for all eleventh and twelfth grade students. It will also be the home of most non-core graduation requirement courses and electives for all grades. The lunch room, media center, administrative offices, and counseling offices will be open at both this and the Cyprus High Brockbank Campus. Athletic facilities will be used at this campus. Cyprus High Brockbank Campus (formerly Brockbank Junior High) The Cyprus High Brockbank campus will offer many options for Cyprus students. It will house the core (math, English, science, social studies) classes for all ninth and tenth grade students. It will also be the home of some non-core graduation requirement courses and electives for all grades. The lunch room, media center, administrative offices, and counseling offices will be open at both this and the Cyprus High School Main Campus. Athletic facilities will be used at this campus. Granite Technical Institute (GTI) - An Extension of Cyprus Did you know that the GTI is part of Cyprus High School? Many students miss out on specialized and important career oriented classes because they think the GTI is a separate school. At the GTI you will have opportunities for hands on career- oriented learning experiences. Some programs also offer college credit upon successful completion. Upon completion students are prepared for employment or further education. The great news is we will bus you there and back so you can take courses there AND at our campus! Granite Connections - An Online Extension of Cyprus Did you know that the Granite Connections is part of Cyprus High School? Many students miss out on online courses because they think the Granite Connections is a separate school. Granite Connections offers both online and face-to-face courses. You can do either and still attend the Cyprus High Campus. At Granite Connections you will have opportunities to get ahead OR help catch up. These courses require motivation at home since the courses are self-paced. If interested, get a referral from your counselor.
4 Ways to Earn College Credit at Cyprus High School Advanced Placement (AP) Courses These are college-level classes taught at the high school. AP classes require more focused learning and commitment. Be prepared for rigorous college level course work and expectations. Students may earn college credit based on the score they receive on the end of the year test. College credit is based on the final score. Scoring scale is between 1 and 5 with 3 being a passing score. Textbooks are provided by your high school. There is a fee for taking the exam. AP credits are accepted nationally and internationally. Each college posts an online list of how AP scores transfer to credit at their school. Concurrent Enrollment (CE) Courses These are college course which are taught at the high school. Students earn college and high school credit. The college credit becomes part of your permanent college transcript. There is a one-time admission fee to the partnering college as well as a fee for course. Students may be required to purchase a textbook and pay lab fees. It is recommended course selections align with your educational plan for college and career readiness. If your student is on a fee waiver, that cannot be applied to the one-time college admission fee. Scholarship Information (There are thousands of scholarships.
