ITS Welcomes You! Information Technology Services (ITS) supports your technology needs while you are at Northeastern. This document will help you learn more about what ITS services are available in the residence halls and how to get connected when you arrive. Year round, ITS has two different locations students can visit for walk-up technical assistance. Additionally, ITS has a variety of services for students from computer labs and printing, to free and discounted software, including free Microsoft Office. Visit the ITS website at northeastern.edu/its to explore everything available to students. University-owned residence halls have the following: Networks ResNet, NUwave, NURes-device Cable television HuskyCable HDplus LOCATIONS Information Technology Services Help & Information Desk help@neu.edu Walk-up assistance is available at the Help & Information Desk, located on the first floor of Snell Library near the InfoCommons. Students are able to receive assistance with accounts, software, and other computer issues including questions about myneu, Blackboard, printing, the computer labs, and software access. For 24/7 phone support, call 617.373.4357 (xhelp). ResNet high-speed wired Internet access ResNet is the high-bandwidth, high-speed wired network in university-owned residence halls. Students are required to register annually to use the network. ITS strongly encourages students to use ResNet whenever possible, as it is significantly faster than any wireless network, providing you with a better experience for project collaboration, streaming video or gaming. northeastern.edu/its/services/networks/resnet NUwave secure wireless Internet access The secure wireless network, NUwave, is available in all residential, academic, and administrative buildings, providing easy Internet access as you move around campus. Your myneu username and password are required to connect. You will also need to accept the wireless.northeastern.edu certificate. NUwave only supports WPA/WPA2-Enterprise wireless security. northeastern.edu/its/services/networks/nuwave NURes-device unsecure wireless Internet access (devices only) Within the residence halls, NURes-device provides unsecured wireless access to devices that cannot connect to NUwave, as they do not support 802.1x. NURes-device is not intended for, nor will it support any higher-level device, such as a computer. Supported devices include: PS3, PS4, Apple TV, Roku 1/2/3, Chromebook, most Kindles, and most smart TVs. A full list of what systems are compatible is available on the ITS website. northeastern.edu/its/services/networks/nures-device Cable TV services HuskyCable HDplus HuskyCable HDplus, Northeastern University s cable television service, is managed by ITS and provided through a partnership with Comcast. HuskyCable HDplus includes both broadcast cable television (60 broadcast and premium channels) and IPTV (online access to live and on-demand streaming content). northeastern.edu/its/services/huskycablehdplus
Internet Access ResNet high-speed wired Internet access Students must annually register each device they wish to use on ResNet. There is one port per residential student. ITS strongly encourages the use of ResNet in the residence halls whenever possible, as it is significantly faster than any wireless network, offering better performance and greater security. Getting Connected To gain access, you must register your device on ResNet while in the residence hall. You will need: An Ethernet port or USB to Ethernet adapter. NOTE: Each Ethernet adapter has a unique MAC address, so it can only be used to register one device on ResNet. The adapter can be used on a different device, but it cannot be used to register a different device. An Ethernet cable (CAT5e or CAT6) not to exceed 25 feet. Your myneu username and password. Register your computer before registering any other devices! Repeat these steps for each device you wish to register. Step 1 Plug one end of your Ethernet cable (CAT5e or CAT6) into the wall and the other into your computer. Turn off your wireless connection, then open a web browser, preferably a current version of Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, or Chrome. If you are not automatically redirected to the ResNet Registration Student Portal welcome page (see image), enter: registerresnet.neu.edu Step 2 Enter your myneu username and password in the spaces provided, and click Submit. The ResNet Registration Student Portal will appear. Within the portal you can register and manage all devices connected to your account. To register the device you are currently using, click the Register this device for ResNet service button to continue. For devices that may lack a web browser, such as a gaming console, please see the section titled Registering Devices. Step 3 On the registration page, enter your mobile phone number into the space provided, using no dashes or spaces. Read the Appropriate Use Policy (AUP). You must agree to abide by the AUP in order to access ResNet. Accept the AUP by clicking Yes, I agree. Also read the addendum regarding personal wireless equipment, check the box for I have read the Appropriate Use Policy and I am now ready to register my device for ResNet, and click the Register this device for ResNet service button. Troubleshooting tip If you are unable to connect, clear your web browser s cache, then turn off your computer (see northeastern.edu/its/cache for details). Wait five minutes, then turn it back on and attempt to access the Internet. If you still cannot access any off-campus web pages or Internet services, call 617.373.4357 (xhelp) for assistance. NUwave secure wireless Internet access No registration is required for NUwave access is tied to your myneu credentials. Typically, once you have entered the correct information, your device will automatically connect to NUwave when it is available. NOTE: Chromebooks are not supported on NUwave; please use NURes-device to connect. Wireless printers are not allowed. Getting Connected To gain access, you will need: Your myneu username and password. You may find that laptops, smartphones and tablets will automatically try connecting to a different network, so be sure you select NUwave on your device. Enter your myneu username and password to connect to NUwave. You will then need to accept the wireless.northeastern.edu certificate. NUwave only supports WPA/WPA2-Enterprise wireless security. Visit the NUwave page on the ITS website for details. Important Notice Do NOT Set Up Personal Routers All Northeastern-owned residential buildings have 100% NUwave access, all personally-owned wireless routers and/or wireless access points are banned in these buildings, as it is a violation of the Appropriate Use Policy (AUP). Failure to comply with the AUP may result in action by ITS, including: loss of network use; referral to the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution (OSCCR). The addition of non-its wireless access points in areas where NUwave is offered degrades the service for both the NUwave network and the additional access point. There are also security concerns regarding the amount of personal information that may be leaked from these additional access points. Devices registering for ResNet and NURes-Device access For details on how to register devices such as smart TVs, gaming consoles, and digital streaming devices, please see the section titled Registering Devices.
Registering Devices Devices such as smart TVs, gaming consoles, and digital streaming devices need to be registered prior to gaining access to either the wired network ResNet or the wireless device network NURes-device. Access to ResNet Registering Ethernet-enabled devices Certain Ethernet-enabled devices are not able to access the ResNet Registration Student Portal, including gaming consoles that lack a web browser. Register these devices using the photo upload option within the portal. To register a device, you will need: Type of device to be registered. A photo of the device s MAC address (12 characters long), or a screenshot of the configuration settings. A ResNet-registered computer, with access to the photo/ screenshot. ResNet Registration Student Portal On a ResNet registered computer, turn off the wireless connection, then open a web browser. If you are not automatically redirected to the ResNet Registration Student Portal welcome page, enter: registerresnet.neu.edu Within the portal, click the Register browserless device via photo upload button. On the registration page, enter your mobile phone number into the space provided, using no dashes or spaces. Read the Appropriate Use Policy (AUP). You must agree to abide by the AUP in order to access ResNet. Accept the AUP by clicking Yes, I agree, then click the Next button. Access to NURes-device Registering wireless-enabled devices A full list of devices that work on NURes-device can be found at northeastern.edu/its/services/networks/nures-device. Please note that NURes-device is an unsecured network. For a secure network connection, register your device on ResNet and use a wired connection. Known devices that do NOT work on NURes-device: wireless printers, wireless speakers (only Bluetooth connections work), Chromecast and Wii. To register a device, you will need: Your name. HuskyMail address. Building/Room/Phone #. Type of device to be registered. A photo of the device s wireless MAC address (12 characters long), or a screenshot of the configuration settings. Email Registration To register a device, you will need to email resnet@neu.edu with the above information. The ResNet Resource Center will contact you in a few days regarding your device registration. On the photo upload page, select Browse/Choose File. Search the computer for the photo/screenshot. In the text box provided indicate the type of device you are registering. Select the Submit button to upload. A confirmation page will indicate whether your photo was submitted successfully. The ResNet Resource Center will contact you in a few days regarding your device registration. For optimal device performance ITS suggests that you use an Ethernet connection whenever possible. In-Person Registration You may also bring the device to the ResNet Resource Center in Speare Hall for registration. You should bring all necessary power and video cables, as well as a remote or game controller. See something, say something! Wireless not working quite right? Notice a channel missing? Call 617.373.4357 (xhelp) to report the issue. ITS cannot fix what it doesn t know about the sooner we know about an issue, the faster it can be resolved.
Cable television HuskyCable HDplus HuskyCable HDplus is available to all students living in university-owned residence halls without a monthly cable bill or the hassle of a cable box. There s no need to sign up, and no need to register for service. Cable television is provided through a partnership with Comcast and consists of two different services: Broadcast cable television - HuskyCable HD, a high definition cable television service, offers 60 broadcast and premium channels. Internet Protocol television (IPTV) - XFINITY On Campus offers online access to 200 channels of live streaming television as well as thousands of on demand shows and movies. Broadcast television basics - HuskyCable HD HuskyCable HD is easy to access. To watch HuskyCable HD in your residence hall room you will need: A HDTV (with a QAM tuner) or a TV with a digital converter box, and the TV remote. A coaxial TV cable. Your TV s manual. (You can download this from the manufacturer s website if you don t have it with you.) If an additional cable TV port is not available in your room, you can purchase a splitter so that you and your roommate can watch cable on two different TV sets. Splitters are available at the Northeastern bookstore and most major electronics retailers. Setting up HuskyCable HD on your TV Connect one end of the coaxial cable to your television set and the other to the cable port in the wall. With many televisions, it is necessary to perform a channel scan in order to access the entire channel lineup. Typically, using the Menu button on your remote can activate a channel scan. Also, make sure that your TV is programmed to receive a signal from cable TV, not from an antenna. Follow your TV s manual to change these settings. Only televisions with a QAM digital tuner will be able to receive the broadcast channels. Most televisions produced after 2009 are digital compliant and have the necessary tuner, however some less expensive television models may not. Please check the specifications in your television s manual, or visit the manufacture website for details. Televisions without a QAM digital tuner will require a digital converter box (available at most electronic retailers) to receive the HD broadcast channels. Broadcast television quality is equipment-dependent. Using old or damaged coaxial cables and/or splitters may cause disruptions in service. Use the shortest possible coaxial for the best reception. Cable TV port not working? Call the ITS Service Desk at 617.373.4357 (xhelp) if you suspect you have a malfunctioning cable TV port in your room. View the HuskyCable HD channel guide: Visit the Comcast TV channel listing online: http://tvgo.xfinity.com/tv-listings Enter 02115 as the zip code, then click the View more service areas link on the bottom left of the pop-up window. Scroll down and select HuskyCable-Northeastern University Boston Standard Cable. Click Save. Once that window closes you will be able to view the current TV listings. NOTE: A live channel guide is available online in the XFINITY On Campus portal. IPTV basics - XFINITY On Campus Online access to live TV channels as well as on demand content is available through XFINITY On Campus. To watch XFINITY On Campus you will need: A computer OR a device running ios or Android OS.* A connection to a Northeastern network, such as NUwave or ResNet. NOTE: IPTV access is only available on campus. Your myneu username and password. * Computers should have the latest version of Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox or Google Chrome and Adobe Flash. Devices will need to download the XFINITY On Campus app from their respective app store. Details on supported devices are available on the ITS website. Logging into the XFINITY On Campus portal Visit https://xfinityoncampus.com/login From the login drop down, select Northeastern University. Enter your myneu username and password. Once authenticated, click on the Start Watching button. This will launch the Xfinity on Campus player. NOTE: It may take several seconds to load the first time. ITS Services and Resources Printing on campus All undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty and staff are provided $120 of free printing each year through the Northeastern Printing Plan. Files can be printed from an ITSmanaged computer lab, or from your personal computer after downloading and installing the Virtual Print Client software. The software is available on myneu, under Self-Service under the Software Downloads section. Swipe-to-print locations are distributed around the Boston campus, including in the lobbies of many residence halls, making both black and white, and color printing more accessible. northeastern.edu/its/services/printing-plan ITS-managed computer labs Information Technology Services manages several computer labs on the Boston campus that Northeastern students, faculty and staff may use. ITS-managed computer labs offer access to the university s extensive library of software applications, as well as printers where you may use the Northeastern Printing Plan. northeastern.edu/its/services/labs Training ITS offers free in-person classes on software training and skills. Free access to Lynda.com online training is also available at lynda.northeastern.edu. northeastern.edu/its/services/training Free Microsoft Office Microsoft Student Advantage Program Active Northeastern students are able to download the latest version of Microsoft Office for free through the Microsoft Student Advantage program. The program provides Office 365 ProPlus to students, as part of Northeastern s site-wide license for Office 365. Students are able to download and install the full suite of applications on up to five computers and on up to five devices. Incoming students will gain access to the software just prior to the start of their first term. northeastern.edu/its/services/software/student-advantage Free Antivirus Software Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) antivirus software is available to all Northeastern students for free, through the Software Downloads section of myneu. It is strongly encouraged that you have a current version of antivirus software on your computer.
