AVAILABLE COMPLETELY VIA DISTANCE EDUCATION WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE TO STUDY EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHING AT AVONDALE? There couldn t be a more perfect time to consider a career in early childhood education or to upgrade your current qualifications to degree level. There is currently a shortage of early childhood teachers with a four year bachelor s degree. The Australian Government is also about to implement its universal access in childhood education initiative (mid 2013), putting Australia on the cusp of significant growth in its early childhood sector. Avondale teaching graduates have a reputation for being some of the most capable teachers in Australia. In 2011, 90 percent of students were offered a full-time teaching position straight after graduation. Avondale also has strong industry connections with various primary schools, preschools and day care centres throughout Lake Macquarie and Australia, giving you access to quality work experience opportunities throughout your degree. Avondale s Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) is also offered via distance education, allowing you to study at a time that suits you - after work, on weekends, or while the kids are at school. Avondale has been providing excellence in Christian higher education since 1897. We are committed to providing education that prepares people to make a significant difference in the world. 3

CONFIDENCE & EXPeRIENCE JEMMA CAMPBELL The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) is a specialised degree that equips students to teach in a variety of early childhood settings. The degree really gave me the confidence and experience I needed to become the early childhood teacher that I wanted to be. Avondale not only provided me with a quality course in early childhood, it also gave me lots of experience in the field before graduating. The experienced lecturers at Avondale are more than happy to give one-on-one assistance and answer any questions that you may have throughout the course. As part of my studies, I was given the opportunity to visit a variety of schools and early childhood settings for my professional experience units. This beneficial experience enabled me to see how children develop and learn before they start primary school. Avondale also provided me with many opportunities to be involved in a variety of school and community events. This enabled me to connect with others in my chosen profession and further develop my skills as a teacher. Avondale lecturers not only gave me the knowledge to become an excellent teacher, they also gave me a holistic view of teaching and opened my eyes to the difference that we can make in this world. Avondale has provided me with some wonderful memories, experiences and life-long friends from all over the world. LEARNING TO ADAPT AMANDA ROCHFORD After just six months of study at a local public university, I dropped out. I wasn t enjoying the degree, I found the campus impersonal and the lecturers uncaring. I reassessed my study options and decided that I d give teaching a go. I started a degree in secondary teaching as I had a love of mathematics and wanted to major in it, but after half of the practicum, I realised that it was not the right fit for me and that I might possibly be interested in primary teaching. My supervisor at Avondale was extremely understanding and allowed me to finish the second half of my professional experience in a kindy classroom instead, to get a feel for it. I knew instantly that I had found my niche and switched to a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood). I found the course and the lecturers instantly engaging and found that the professional experience requirement each semester gave me increased confidence in my decision to change my degree area. It also gave me the practical experience I needed to begin part-time work in the early childhood field during my studies. During the degree and especially the professional experience units, I learnt that children are unpredictable, as is life and you have to learn to adapt. The knowledge of child development and the experience I gained during the degree has not only helped me in the workplace, but also with raising my own two children. I look forward to working back in childcare when my kids begin school. Amanda Rochford Then: Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) Now: Before becoming a mum, Amanda was working as a Room Leader at Kids Korner Long Day Care Centre 8

MANY OPPORTUNITIES KYLIE SIMS I came to Avondale after studying my Children s Services Diploma at TAFE. My friend who was studying her Outdoor Recreation certificate spoke highly of Avondale, so I decided to give it a go. When I first arrived at Avondale, it was during the second semester. Everyone went out of their way to help catch me up to where the other students in the Early Childhood course were. I always felt comfortable consulting my lecturers on assignments or something in a lecture that I didn t understand. Avondale has many opportunities for guidance which I utilised during my time there, such as essay tutors and lecturers being available for consultations. I appreciated that lecturers put their phone numbers on unit outlines and welcomed students to call if they needed extra help. Due to my mid-year start, I took one Early Childhood course via distance education. This enabled me to finish my degree with the people I studied with the whole way through. The work was easy to follow and I had weekly contact with the lecturers running my course. It was a low-stress way to finish off what was a great four years at Avondale. In my current position, I have referred back to many things I learnt in my lectures and tutorials at Avondale. The professional experience I did each year also gave me the hands-on experience I needed to work as a teacher. The reports I got back from my practical experiences are what helped me secure employment after I finished my degree. These types of reports are not required at other universities, so this was definitely an advantage I had over others. Kylie Sims Then: Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) Now: Prep teacher at St Phillip s Christian College 11
