5 PROFILE BREEANA PRICE BREEANA PRICE WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO DISCOVER THE DIPLOMA IN GENERAL STUDIES AT THE RIGHT TIME. Once I completed Year 12 I realised that I wanted to study science, but I had not done some of the prerequisite subjects and thought that my only option was repeating, she said. Breeana learned the Diploma in General Studies program at the University of Melbourne offers guaranteed entry into a Bachelor of Science and many other courses if students meet the grade requirements. That made me determined to study this course, she said. The DiGS program let students explore study options at a university level, including biology and animal science, chemistry, economics, management and climate change subjects. Graduates can gain guaranteed entry into Science, Commerce, Environments or Biomedicine degrees if they meet grade and subject prerequisites. The course is taught at the University of Melbourne s Dookie campus in the Goulburn Valley. Many students choose to live in oncampus housing and cottages. Breeana said moving two hours away from home was a big step, but, having most of her fellow students also living on campus has benefited her studies. We are all one big group of friends that study and have fun with each other in our spare time, she said. The units and houses have everything we need to comfortably live away from home. Living on campus has also meant that she can have constant access to all of the learning facilities and spaces. Even some of the teaching and office staff live on campus, so it is easy to contact them for help. I enjoy how this course gives you an authentic university experience without the rushed feel of a bigger metropolitan campus, Breeana said. Many of the subjects have regular field trips which enhance your learning experience. I would definitely recommend the Diploma in General Studies to anyone who wants a guaranteed pathway into a University of Melbourne course, regardless of their past education. Breeana hopes to transition to the Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne next year and work in forensic science.
6 PROFILE SHAUN MARTIN Shaun Martin completed the Diploma in General Studies, studying part-time on a scholarship after his employer suggested that he undertake some study as a positive career move. He works for DindiAg in Yea and previously hadn t undertaken any study since he completed his VCE in Having a qualification in agriculture is more important than other industries, because so many working in the industry are unqualified, he said. Shaun said the qualification gave him more credibility with his clients. Client interaction is much better as now I can explain the science behind many things much better, he said. Rather than being just an operator, I have taken a bigger consultation role on with the business as I can communicate things such as plant development, landscape management, chemical reactions and other things at a cellular level to clients, whereas beforehand I had very limited knowledge. This also gave him self-assurance at his own workplace. I have the confidence to create new ideas and pathways for our clients and business, as I can back up my ideas with the scientific and agriculture information that I learnt at Dookie, he said. The networking skills I developed while doing the DiGS program has also been beneficial as I know people in various industries whom I have often contacted for assistance. It s such a supportive environment and fantastic to tie in with your work. It gives you a leg-up.
